#495 Wicked Games- Chris Isaak

The world was on fire and no one could save me but you/
It’s strange what desire will make foolish people do.

Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Games” is a song about desire, longing and unrequited love. But what exactly is this “Wicked Game” Isaac speaks about? Well, a beautiful woman makes him fall in love with her- though “lust” is probably a better word for it. She toys with his emotions because she “played” him, told him sweet nothings and “made him” dream of her. She is clearly toying with him! You can hear the aching in his voice. That’s the game.

What makes this a great song? One is the instrumentation and production. Listen to the lead guitar in the intro: The first slide-note is iconic and sets the tone for the rest of the song; it feels mopey and longing. It leads into the great finger-picking.

The second is Isaac’s voice is unique and-on brand and expresses his longing. As with Only The Lonely by The Motels we see a great example of a singer using his/her voice to express the emotion conveyed by the words in the lyrics. With the Motels it was loneliness, with Isaac it is longing.

And the video! So sexy.

Wicked Games Lyrics

The world was on fire and no one could save me but you
It’s strange what desire will make foolish people do
I never dreamed that I’d meet somebody like you
And I never dreamed that I’d lose somebody like you

No, I don’t wanna fall in love (this world is only gonna break your heart)
No, I don’t wanna fall in love (this world is only gonna break your heart)
With you
With you (this world is only gonna break your heart)

What a wicked game you play, to make me feel this way
What a wicked thing to do, to let me dream of you
What a wicked thing to say, you never felt this way
What a wicked thing to do, to make me dream of you

And I don’t wanna fall in love (this world is only gonna break your heart)
No, I don’t wanna fall in love (this world is only gonna break your heart)
With you

The world was on fire and no one could save me but you
It’s strange what desire will make foolish people do
I never dreamed that I’d love somebody like you
And I never dreamed that I’d lose somebody like you

No, I don’t wanna fall in love (this world is only gonna break your heart)
No, I don’t wanna fall in love (this world is only gonna break your heart)
With you (this world is only gonna break your heart)
With you (this world is only gonna break your heart)

No, I (this world is only gonna break your heart)
(This world is only gonna break your heart)
Nobody loves no one

#494 No One’s Gonna Love You (live)- Band of Horses

Someone, they should have warned you/
When things start splitting at the seams and now
The whole thing’s tumbling down…

Check out the “Live on Spotify” version of “No One’s Gonna Love You” by Band of Horses. Here, I list a specific recording. I will do that several times throughout this list. That can mean everything from the original is horrible to this version is slightly better. In this case, Band of Horses did a stripped-down acoustic set with one guitar and just lead singer Ben Bridwell singing. It is perfect. I feel it captures the song perfectly…and allowed me to ‘get it’. I didn’t hear greatness in the original.

No One's Gonna Love You Meaning
Band of Horses

Another couple famous examples of this are the live/secondary versions of Imagine Dragon’s “Shots” and Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue”. I think there is about 15 similar examples on this list. Also, stripped-down is not always better, as Peter Frampton will show us later.

The lyrics of “No One’s Gonna Love You” are somewhat obscure. It is about some type of relationship, probably a romantic one, that is a ghost of what it once was. It appears the other person still has hope things will go back to the way they were before, but the author says, “I never want to hear you say/That you’d be better off or you liked it that way.” The relationship has split at the seams and the “whole thing’s tumbling down.”

The refrain: “no one is gonna love you more than I do,” feels somewhat final. This is not a relationship that will be revived. This line brings us sadness, whereas in another context the same words might bring us happiness. Part of that is the tone of the song and the accompanying lyrics but mostly due to Bridwell’s voice, which helps convey the sadness of the tune.

No One’s Gonna Love You Lyrics

It’s looking like a limb torn off
Or all together just taken apart
We’re reeling through an endless fall
We are the ever-living ghost of what once was

But no one is ever gonna love you more than I do
No one’s gonna love you more than I do

And anything to make you smile
It is a better side of you to admire
But they should never take so long
Just to be over there, then back to another one

And no one is ever gonna love you more than I do
No one’s gonna love you more than I do

But someone, they could have warned you
When things start splitting at the seams and now
The whole thing’s tumbling down
Things start splitting at the seams and now
When things start splitting at the seams and now
It’s tumbling down hard

And anything to make you smile
You are the ever-living ghost of what once was
I never want to hear you say
That you’d be better off or you liked it that way

And no one is ever gonna love you more than I do
No one’s gonna love you more than I do

But someone, they should have warned you
When things start splitting at the seams and now
The whole thing’s tumbling down
Things start splitting at the seams and now
When things start splitting at the seams and now
It’s tumbling down, hard

#493 My Heart Will Go On- Celine Dion

Love can touch us one time/
And last for a lifetime.

Try to remember the first time you heard Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”. I remember feeling so emotional and overcome by the performance. This song has been overplayed so much that it almost becomes annoying. That is one of the most difficult aspects of making a good top 500 songs list—is finding a way to get past that feeling and just analyze the song. I want my songs to have great melodies that make an emotional impact, and “My Heart Will Go On” delivers on this, or at least it did the first 100 times I heard it.

My Heart Will Go On Meaning
Celine Dion

“My Heart Will Go On” is a very well-written song. The way it changes key a half step up to heighten the emotion plays right into Dion’s powerhouse, as she loves to belt out the high notes. The Irish instrumentation (to fit The Titanic theme) adds to the song and makes it unique in pop.  I also have to point out that the lyrics do a great job of representing the emotion for the movie. It is great to have a great song written for your movie, but when the lyrics match the climax perfectly…that is something special.

My Heart Will Go On Lyrics

Every night in my dreams,
I see you, I feel you.
That is how I know you go on.

Far across the distance,
And spaces between us.
You have come to show you go on.

Near, far, wherever you are,
I believe that the heart does go on.
Once more you open the door,
And you’re here in my heart.
And my heart will go on and on.

Love can touch us one time,
And last for a lifetime.
And never let go ’til we’re gone.

Love was when I loved you,
One true time I’d hold to.
In my life we’ll always go on.

Near, far, wherever you are,
I believe that the heart does go on.
Once more you open the door,
And you’re here in my heart.
And my heart will go on and on.

You’re here, there’s nothing I fear,
And I know that my heart will go on.
We’ll stay forever this way,
You are safe in my heart and
My heart will go on and on.
