#58 Someone Like You- Adele

I heard that your dreams came true/
Guess she gave you things, I didn’t give to you.

Adele reminisces about an old lover and the good times in “Someone Like You”. She remembers the promises they made to each other when they were in love. She decides to seek out this former lover and has come to discover that he is with someone new. Even worse—he is happy—and married.

Still, she shows up and surreptitiously bumps into him. They once had great rapport but now he is acting differently. That’s strange—he was never the type to be shy. I think she was expecting a miracle to happen, though she doesn’t mention it. Perhaps she envisioned he’d immediately dump his wife and run away with her, but it doesn’t turn out that way. In the end she just asks him not to forget her. He says he won’t.

Someone Like You Meaning
Adele

Life can hurt.

As with most Adele songs, the first thing we notice in “Someone like You” is her amazing voice. It is truly unique and once in a generation. The piano arrangement sounds more complex than it is. It fits the song perfectly but is relatively easy to play. I don’t hear any other instruments for most of the song.

There is some voice doubling, but other than that the song is light on effects. One thing that doesn’t get brought up often enough is that this song was released on her 21 album…meaning that Adele wrote this great song at the age of 21. The song sounds like it was written by someone older; someone with more life experience than a 21 year old.

Someone Like You Lyrics

I heard that you’re settled down,
That you found a girl and you’re married now.
I heard that your dreams came true.
Guess she gave you things, I didn’t give to you.
Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain’t like you to hold back or hide from the light.

I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it.
I had hoped you’d see my face
And that you’d be reminded that for me, it isn’t over.

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you, too.
“Don’t forget me, ” I beg.
I remember you said,
“Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead”.
“Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead”.

You know how the time flies,
Only yesterday was the time of our lives.
We were born and raised in a summer haze,
Bound by the surprise of our glory days.

“Don’t forget me, ” I begged.
I remember you said,
“Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead”.

Nothing compares, no worries or cares,
Regrets and mistakes, they’re memories made.
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you.
“Don’t forget me, ” I beg,
I remember you said,
“Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead”.

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you.
I wish nothing but the best for you, too.
“Don’t forget me, ” I begged,
I remember you said,
“Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead”.
“Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead”.
