#305 Nights in White Satin-Moody Blues

Just what the truth is/
I can’t say any more.

Another 1967 classic, “Night’s in White Satin” was written by David Lanz of the Moody Blues in a day. It would take several years until it finally caught on. The lyrics have something to do with his new perspective on life given his new love for a woman. It has caused him to think it has skewed his perception about certain thingsā€¦for good and bad. But he is certain of his love and is happy for it.

Nights in White Satin Meaning
Moody Blues

The production of Nights in White Satin really makes the song. The background vocals are over the top: they make it sound like screams from a haunted house. (But in a musical way somehow.) The orchestration sounds great. They were a poor up-and-coming band when they bought studio time to for this.

Each instrument seems to have its own time to shine: the bass, the violin, the vocals, background vocals, flute, Mellatron. This song has a bit of everything that mixed together makes for a hauntingly lovely love song.

Nights in White Satin Lyrics

Nights in white satin,
Never reaching the end.
Letters I’ve written,
Never meaning to send.

Beauty I’d always missed
With these eyes before.
Just what the truth is,
I can’t say any more.

‘Cause I love you.
Yes I love you!
Oh how I love you.

Gazing at people, some hand in hand,
Just what I’m going through they can’t understand.
Some try to tell me, thoughts they cannot defend,
Just what you want to be, you will be in the end.

And I love you.
Yes I love you!
Oh how I love you,
Oh how I love you.

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end.
Letters I’ve written,
Never meaning to send.

Beauty I’ve always missed
With these eyes before,
Just what the truth is,
I can’t say any more.

‘Cause I love you.
Yes I love you!
Oh how I love you,
Oh how I love you,
‘Cause I love you,
Yes I love you.
Oh how I love you.
Oh how I love you.

  1. I always thought the song was titled “Knights in White Satin”. Kinda changes the meaning a little that it’s actually “Nights in White Satin”. I think I like “my” title better. Has anyone else made this same mistake…?
