#258 The Rain Song- Led Zeppelin

Upon us all, upon us all a little rain must fall.

In “The Rain Song”, Plant likens a relationship to the seasons passing. Before there was you, it was cold, and the spring and summer were so sweet, filled with smiles and song. But then the rain came. He still loves her, but now he uses words like “devotion” to describe their love, because the relationship is enduring difficult times. But in every relationship, we must both hold the torch to see ourselves through the rain.

The Rain Song Meaning
Zeppelin

In many songs I mention that the orchestration adds something to the song, but in “The Rain Song”, the orchestration is the song. The depth of the arraignment is one of the best and most nuanced I have ever heard in a rock or pop record.

Listen to the cello. It sounds so grainy, and full. It serves as a bass-line but also weaves its way up into the melody seamlessly. The production really is amazing. The way Zeppelin incorporates the piano and guitar into the orchestration of the string arrangement is what makes this song.

The Rain Song Lyrics

It is the springtime of my loving
The second season I am to know
You are the sunlight in my growing
So little warmth I’ve felt before
It isn’t hard to feel me glowing
I watched the fire that grew so low, oh

It is the summer of my smiles
Flee from me, keepers of the gloom
Speak to me only with your eyes
It is to you I give this tune
Ain’t so hard to recognize, oh
These things are clear to all from time to time, ooh

Oh, oh
Oh, oh
Oh
Talk talk, talk, talk
Hey, I felt the coldness of my winter
I never thought it would ever go
I cursed the gloom that set upon us, ‘pon us, ‘pon us, ‘pon us
But I know that I love you so
Oh, but I know
That I love you so
These are the seasons of emotion
And like the wind, they rise and fall
This is the wonder of devotion
I see the torch
We all must hold
This is the mystery of the quotient, quotient
Upon us all, upon us all a little rain must fall
Just a little rain, oh
Ooh, yeah-yeah-yeah

#257 Foxey Lady- Jimi Hendrix

Yeah, I’m tired of wasting all my precious time/
You got to be all mine, all mine.

The lyrics of Jimi Hendrix “Foxey Lady” are about as straight-forward as you can get. Jimi sees a hot woman and he is not going to waste his or her time; nor is he gonna do her harm. He made up his mind, he is going to take her home tonight. Listen to the song. How could she resist? Here he comes!

Foxey Lady Foxy Lady Meaning
Jimi

The guitar work is amazing, but what makes it more so, is that Hendrix is playing it while he is singing. If you notice, the guitar work is a lead guitar piece throughout. Most guitarist will play rhythm while they sing and let someone else play lead guitar. Almost every guitar player does it this way.

It is just too hard to do both well at the same time due to the different rhythms involved. Very few people can do it. Three names come to mind: Hendrix, Buckingham and Clapton. I would rank them in that order. Also, listen to that introduction with the distortion. That simply wasn’t done before.

I have no idea about the spelling of “Foxey Lady” but it was originally spelled that way, not “Foxy Lady”.

Foxey Lady Lyrics

Foxey, foxey
You know you’re a cute little heart breaker, ha
Foxey, yeah
And you know you’re a sweet little love maker, ha
Foxey

I want to take you home, haha yeah
I won’t do you no harm no, ha
You got to be all mine, all mine
Ooh foxey lady, yeah
Foxey, foxey
Now-a I see you come down on the scene
Oh foxey

You make me want to get up and a scream
Foxey, oh baby listen now
I’ve made up my mind
Yeah, I’m tired of wasting all my precious time
You got to be all mine, all mine
Foxey lady
Here I come
Foxey

Yeah
I’m gonna take you home
I won’t do you no harm no
You got to be all mine, all mine
Foxey lady
Here I come baby, I’m commin’ to get ya

Ooh foxey lady yeah yeah
You look so good foxey
Oh yeah foxey
Yeah give us some foxey
Foxey foxey lady
Foxey lady

#256 April Come She Will- Simon and Garfunkel

September, I remember/
A love once new has now grown old.

“April Comes She Will” is similar to Zeppelin’s The Rain Song in that Simon writes about the lifespan of a relationship in terms of the seasons—more specifically the months of the year. Simon notes how his beloved’s moods seem to change each month as the months go by, eventually leading to the end of the relationship.

April Come She Will Meaning
A young Art Garfunkel

The lyrics of “April Come She Will” are simple and powerful, and the song is very short—it comes in at under two minutes. This is one song that I wish Simon would have extended by another minute if it was in any way possible. The melody is so tender and beautiful it hits you and then the song is over, and it is gone.

The lead vocals are sung by Garfunkel while Simon plays the guitar. They are an amazing duo. Garfunkel may have the best male voice I have ever heard. Paul’s is not bad either, but it is just not Garfunkel’s. You may have heard this song in The Graduate. If you haven’t, do yourself a favor and check it out. Simon and Garfunkel do the entire soundtrack to one of the best movies of all time.

April Come She Will Lyrics

April come she will.
When streams are ripe and swelled with rain.
May, she will stay,
Resting in my arms again.

June, she’ll change her tune.
In restless walks she’ll prowl the night.
July, she will fly.
And give no warning to her flight.

August, die she must.
The autumn winds blow chilly and cold.
September I’ll remember,
A love once new has now grown old.
