#300 Can’t Always Get What You Want- Rolling Stones

You can’t always get what you want/
But if you try sometimes, well, you might find/
You get what you need.

While it sounds like something Confucius might have said–it turns out “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” was The Rolling Stones. I’d imagine Mick had the idea for the line and it was so good he built a song around it. The Stones have a lot of songs that are great concepts, but I find that the lyrics often don’t reach the level of the concept. See “Paint it Black”, “Wild Horses”. Granted, some of their songs have great lyrics. Sympathy For the Devil and Ruby Tuesday are good examples.

Can't Always Get What You Want Meaning
The Rolling Stones

Perhaps there is something lost in the British to American translation. I do think that having the concept is more important that the actual individual words spoken…especially if you are looking for a hit that resonates with people. Sia is a person I’d put into this category too. Great concepts, okay lyrics. You can still make an incredible song this way (obviously).

Besides the title, the choir stands out. Perhaps I am a sucker for choirs in pop and rock, but I think it is an amazing performance and raises the song to the level of a classic. A good choir can make the music feel more important. More monumental. The French horn in the beginning is a nice touch. Overall, this is one of the best-produced songs of the Stones. Many fine choices that add up to a greater whole.

Can’t Always Get What You Want Lyrics

I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she would meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man

No, you can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she was gonna meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man

You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes, well, you might find
You get what you need

And I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair share of abuse
Singing, “We’re gonna vent our frustration
If we don’t we’re gonna blow a fifty-amp fuse”

You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes, well, you just might find
You get what you need

I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda
My favorite flavor, cherry red
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me, and that was “dead”
I said to him

You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need

You get what you need, yeah, oh baby
I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well, I could tell by her blood-stained hands

You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need

You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need, oh yeah

#299 Words- The Bee Gees

It’s only words, and words are all I have
To take your heart away.

“Words” is a beautiful, pre-disco Bee Gees love song about the inability to express words of love to a significant other. We saw a similar them in Jim Croce’s Have to Say I love You.  People who believe in the power of words are shocked when they hear another person say “those are only words”.

Here the Bee Gees are saying “look, words are all I have, they are everything to me.” I have always appreciated the sentiment of this song and for standing up for all of those whose love language is words of affection. This is a great song about that.

Words Meaning
Bee Gees

For those of you only familiar with the Bee Gees because of Staying Alive, this is what the majority of their songs sound like. They had a long and varied career, so they tried a little of everything, but this song is very representative of their work. Not too heavy in instrumentation, usually written on guitar with Barry singing lead and the brothers harmonizing. They were great harmonizers and had a very unique sound.

Words Lyrics

Smile an everlasting smile,
A smile can bring you near to me.
Don’t ever let me find you down,
‘Cause that would bring a tear to me.

This world has lost its glory,
Let’s start a brand new story now, my love.
Right now, there’ll be no other time,
And I can show you how, my love.

Talk in everlasting words,
And dedicate them all to me.
And I will give you all my life,
I’m here if you should call to me.

You think that I don’t even mean
A single word I say.
It’s only words and words are all I have,
To take your heart away.

You think that I don’t even mean
A single word I say,
It’s only words and words are all I have,
To take your heart away.

It’s only words and words are all I have,
To take your heart away.
It’s only words and words are all I have,
To take your heart away.

#298 I Wanna Be Sedated- The Ramones

Twenty twenty twenty four hours to go/
I wanna be sedated.

The Ramones wrote “I Want To Be Sedated” about their touring schedule. It was twenty-four hours until their next show and they are stuck in a hotel room with nothing to do. What better to do than get high? Their job was notably more glamorous than most peoples but perhaps many people can relate to the everyday boredom of one’s job that The Ramones are talking about. (Though, as they describe in the song, they are jet-setting and performing massive concerts, but hey, our life is kinda similar).

I Wanna Be Sedated Meaning
The Ramones

Humor in music is very hit or miss. This song is genuinely funny and feel-good. I love the line “Just put me in a wheelchair, get me to the show”. “I Want to be Sedated” is classic, lite-punk rock at its finest. This line works.

I Wanna Be Sedated Lyrics

20, 20, 20, 4, hours to go
I wanna be sedated
Nothing to do, nowhere to go, oh
I wanna be sedated

Just, get me to the airport, put me on a plane
Hurry, hurry, hurry, before I go insane
I can’t control my fingers, I can’t control my brain
Oh no oh-oh oh-oh

20, 20, 20, 4, hours to go
I wanna be sedated
Nothing to do, nowhere to go, oh
I wanna be sedated

Just put me in a wheelchair, get me on a plane
Hurry, hurry, hurry, before I go insane
I can’t control my fingers, I can’t control my brain
Oh no oh-oh oh-oh

20, 20, 20, 4, hours to go
I wanna be sedated
Nothing to do, nowhere to go, oh
I wanna be sedated

Just put me in a wheelchair and get me to the show
Hurry, hurry, hurry, before I go loco
I can’t control my fingers, I can’t control my toes
Oh no oh-oh oh-oh

20, 20, 20, 4, hours to go
I wanna be sedated
Nothing to do, nowhere to go, oh
I wanna be sedated

Just put me in a wheelchair, get me to the show
Hurry, hurry, hurry, before I go loco
I can’t control my fingers, I can’t control my toes
Oh no oh-oh oh-oh
Bam-bam-bambam bambam-bam-bambam, I wanna be sedated
Bam-bam-bambam bambam-bam-bambam, I wanna be sedated
Bam-bam-bambam bambam-bam-bambam, I wanna be sedated
Bam-bam-bambam bambam-bam-bambam, I wanna be sedated
