#333 Lady in Red- Chris De Burgh

But I hardly know this beauty by my side/
I’ll never forget the way you look tonight.

In “Lady in Red”, Chris De burgh sees his woman looking especially good one night  and it causes him to look at her in a different way. He is reminded how much he loves her. Sure, he doesn’t get into specifics-other than she is dresses in red-but we get the idea. It is interesting how men can be such visual creatures.

As he sees all the men’s heads’ turn as she walks across the dance floor, De burgh gets the feeling that perhaps he may have been taking her for granted. Not in horrible way, he just think to himself “I should be appreciating this more”.

Lady in Red Meaning
Chris Deburgh

There is a lot going on in the production in “Lady in Red” that one might miss. This song is heavily driven by the rhythm section. First, the bass-line is original and adds a ton to the song. Second the finger snapping. It adds an additional layer of percussion in the chorus. Excellent job by the producer. The synthesizer does create a lot of the distinct sound, however, I think it would sound just as nice (if not better) on a piano. I think this song is a good candidate for a cover.

Lady In Red Lyrics

I’ve never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight
I’ve never seen you shine so bright
I’ve never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance
They’re looking for a little romance, given half a chance
And I have never seen that dress you’re wearing
Or the highlights in your hair that catch your eyes
I have been blind

The lady in red is dancing with me, cheek to cheek
There’s nobody here, it’s just you and me
It’s where I want to be
But I hardly know this beauty by my side
I’ll never forget the way you look tonight

I’ve never seen you looking so gorgeous as you did tonight
I’ve never seen you shine so bright, you were amazing
I’ve never seen so many people want to be there by your side
And when you turned to me and smiled, it took my breath away
And I have never had such a feeling
Such a feeling of complete and utter love, as I do tonight

The lady in red is dancing with me, cheek to cheek
There’s nobody here, it’s just you and me
It’s where I want to be
But I hardly know this beauty by my side
I’ll never forget the way you look tonight

I never will forget the way you look tonight
The lady in red, the lady in red
The lady in red, my lady in red
I love you

#332 Live for Today- The Grass Roots

We’ll take the most from living/
Have pleasure while we can.

“Live for Today” is a summer of love classic by The Grass Roots. Notice the psychedelic-like feel of the guitars and the blended vocals in the chorus. The notion of living for today captures the music of this time period so perfectly.

Forget society with all their rigid plans. That just leads to needless complication and worry. Chasing money? That’s a fools errand too. The author tells his love that “as long as I’m with you” that’s all he really needs. He’ll live for today while others waste their life away.

Live For Today Meaning
The Grass Roots

“Live for Today” came out during the height of the Vietnam War, so when The Grass Roots sing “Let’s take the most of living/ have pleasure while we can,” it struck a chord with those who feared getting drafted. It is a great Carpe Diem song that stands the test of time. How important is chasing money and making plans if you can’t have love? A song that really epitomizes the hippy culture of the late 60s.

I think “Live For Today” makes an interesting contrast to one of the best protest songs of the 2010’s I’d Love it if We Made it by 1975.

Live For Today Lyrics

When I think of all the worries
People seem to find,
And how they’re in a hurry
To complicate their minds.

By chasing after money
And dreams that can’t come true,
I’m glad that we are different
We’ve better things to do.

May others plan their future
I’m busy loving you.
(One, two, three, four!)

Sha la la la la la live for today.
Sha la la la la la live for today.
And don’t worry ’bout tomorrow, hey.
Sha la la la la la live for today (live for today).

We were never meant to worry
The way that people do.
And I don’t mean to hurry
As long as I’m with you.

We’ll take it nice and easy
And use my simple plan.
You’ll be my lovin’ woman
I’ll be your lovin’ man.

We’ll take the most from living.
Have pleasure while we can.
(Two, three, four!)

Sha la la la la la live for today.
Sha la la la la la live for today.
And don’t worry ’bout tomorrow, hey.
Sha la la la la la live for today (live for today).

Baby, I need to feel you inside of me.
I got to feel you deep inside of me.
Baby, please come close to me.
I got to have you now, please, please.

Please, please gimme some a-lovin’.
To gimme some a-lovin’.
To gimme some a-lovin’.
To gimme some a-lovin’.
Baby, gimme some a-lovin’.
Gimme some a-lovin’.
Got to have all your lovin’.
Gimme some a-lovin’.
I need all your lovin’.
Gimme some a-lovin’.

Now I need all your loving
Sha la la la la la live for today.
Sha la la la la la live for today.
And don’t worry ’bout tomorrow, hey
Sha la la la la la live for today.
(Oh, no, no, no, no, no)
Sha la la la la la live for today.

#331 Your Ex Love is Dead- Stars

You were what I wanted/
I gave what I gave.

Stars’ “Your Ex-lover is Dead” takes us inside the mind of two ex lovers as they are introduced at a party. We don’t get the feeling that this was a love-of-your-life type of relationship. We get a chance to hear their inner-dialogue as they agree to catch a taxi across town.

Both are keenly aware of the other, but are trying to play it cool. At the same time, they are relatively unaffected–compared to other  songs with this theme. Meeting an ex tends to bring out raw emotion. Here it is mostly ambivalence.

The guy doesn’t have much to say in the taxi. But it isn’t because he is heartbroken-he is trying to remember her name. The woman is a little more affected. She seems to remember him perusing her and her not being as into it as she was. It is questionable whether either remember the past perfectly.

Two ex-lovers meeting is a great topic for a song. We’ve had it on this list a couple times now. And there are a couple notable favorites that don’t quite make the list, like Dan Fogelburg’s Another Auld Lang Syne. If ever there is a time of a rush of differing emotions it is at times like these. It can be sad, relief, anger, hurt and anything in between.

Your Ex-lover is Dead Meaning

StarsThe song does a good job of expressing the underlying sadness, though it is mostly underlying. The title tells us they are both two different people now–perhaps in a better place. It is also nice that they don’t have regrets about their time together. That’s a very progressive mindset that probably will save money on counseling.

These are essentially two strangers passing in the night.

The reason there is an underlying sadness is because I think it is something we bring to the song. At any point in our lives there are constantly people going in and out and when we hear a song like this it brings a feeling of nostalgia, even if that might not have been the intent.

I like all the choices and voices on this song except the introductory spoken line. That doesn’t do anything for me. The imagery is especially great in the song and the piano does a great job of livening up the song. The way the song changes tone between the verse, chorus and bridge adds a unique flavor.

Your Ex Lover is Dead Lyrics

“When there’s nothing left to burn,
You have to set yourself on fire.”

God that was strange to see you again,
Introduced by a friend of a friend.
Smiled and said, “Yes, I think we’ve met before.”
In that instant it started to pour.

Captured a taxi despite all the rain,
We drove in silence across Pont Champlain.
And all of the time you thought I was sad,
I was trying to remember your name.

This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin,
Tried to reach deep but you couldn’t get in.
Now you’re outside me,
You see all the beauty
Repent all your sin.

It’s nothing but time and a face that you lose,
I chose to feel it and you couldn’t choose.
I’ll write you a postcard,
I’ll send you the news.
From a house down the road from real love.

Live through this, and you won’t look back.
Live through this, and you won’t look back.

There’s one thing I want to say, so I’ll be brave,
You were what I wanted,
I gave what I gave.
I’m not sorry I met you.
I’m not sorry it’s over,
I’m not sorry there’s nothing to say.
I’m not sorry there’s nothing to save.
