#385 Lover’s Cross- Jim Croce

But for every time that we spent laughin’/
There were two times that I cried.

In “Lover’s Cross”, Jim Croce is telling us that he is a simple man. When the relationship gets bad, he is going to leave. He isn’t going to stick around like a martyr, while he is in pain.  He says “I never been much of a martyr before and I ain’t bout to start nothing new. And I can’t hang upon that Lover’s Cross for you.” So, he leaves.

Lover's Cross Meaning
Jim Croce

I have always thought Croce was a bad ass. I remember when I was really young my dad would play his tapes in the car and he would sing about Leroy Brown “baddest man in the whole damn town”, and it blew my five-year-old mind that he said “damn” in a song. You don’t mess with Jim!

This song is great for a couple reasons. The guitar work is well done. There are two acoustic guitars playing off each other and that creates a great sound. Also, in Lover’s Cross he adds an orchestra that really fills out the rest of the sound. This song is perhaps the most highly produced song of his short career, but it paid dividends. The melody is moody and unique. And Croce’s voice is always a delight to listen to.

Lover’s Cross Lyrics

Guess that it was bound to happen
Was just a matter of time
But now I’ve come to my decision
And it’s a-one of the painful kind
‘Cause now it seems that you wanted a martyr
Just a regular guy wouldn’t do
But baby I can’t hang upon no lover’s cross for you

Yes, I really got to hand it to you
‘Cause girl you really tried
But for ev’ry time that we spent laughin’
There were two times that I cried
And you were tryin’ to make me your martyr
And that’s the one thing I just couldn’t do
‘Cause baby, I can’t hang upon no lover’s cross for you

‘Cause tables are meant for turnin’
And people are bound to change
And bridges are meant for burnin’
When the people and mem’ries they join aren’t the same

So I’ll hope that you can find
Another who can take what I could not
He’ll have to be a super guy
Or maybe a super god
‘Cause I never was much of a martyr before
And I ain’t ’bout to start nothin’ new
And baby, I can’t hang upon no lover’s cross for you

‘Cause tables are meant for turnin’
And people are bound to change
And bridges are meant for burnin’
When the people and mem’ries they join aren’t the same

So I’ll hope that you can find
Another who can take what I could not
He’ll have to be a super guy
Or maybe a super god
‘Cause I never was much of a martyr before
And I ain’t ’bout to start nothin’ new
And baby, I can’t hang upon no lover’s cross for you

#384 I’ll Be Over You- Toto

As soon as forever is through/
I’ll be over you.

Toto’s “I’ll Be Over You” has everything I want in a soft rock song. First, it has a beautiful and memorable chorus and verse.  If you have those two you have a classic. It’s a song about a simple concept, usually love, with easily digestible lyrics. And of course, a great vocal. This song has all of those things. A short sax solo is fine too. This song has an underrated melody and lyrics. I have never seen it considered an all-time great song. Though, I never see any soft rock songs considered great. They can be.

Ill Be Over You Meaning
Toto

The lyrics tell a sobering tale about a man analyzing his life after a failed love. Has destiny passed him by? Will he ever live out his dreams? So many promises were made to each other—did they not mean anything? He concludes that once he gets over his heartbreak and being overanxious about finding new love, he’ll get over his heartbreak and discover someone new.

I’ll Be Over You Lyrics

Some people live their dreams
Some people close their eyes
Some people’s destiny
Passes by

There are no guarantees
There are no alibis
That’s how our love must be
Don’t ask why

It takes some time
God knows how long
I know that I can forget you

As soon as my heart stops breakin’
Anticipating
As soon as forever is through
I’ll be over you

Remembering times gone by
Promises we once made
What are the reasons why
Nothing stays the same

There were the nights holding you close
Someday I’ll try to forget them
Someday I’ll be over you

#383 You Keep Me Hangin On- The Supremes

Get out, get out of my life
And let me sleep at night.

“You Keep Me Hangin On” is another Motown classic from the Supremes. They really were a machine in the late 60s. This is a song about getting free from a relationship that might not be that healthy. The Supremes ask to “set me free, cause you keep hanging on”. It sounds like a compelling reason to not come around to me! It is a great breakup song that a lot of women and men can get enjoyment from. If is in that tradition of women empowerment songs that came out of Motown (e.g. Respect).

You Keep Me Hanging On Meaning
The Supremes

Diana Ross and her vocals sound accessible and the rest of The Supremes sound great singing backup. The harmonies sound nice. The band also delivers a tight sound driven by the drums and bass. There is that muted electric guitar sound that is so prevalent in Motown sound and would also be featured in disco 10 years later.

You Keep Me Hanging On Lyrics

The love bug done bit me
Didn’t mean for him to get me
Woo, get up in the morning
And I’m filled with desire
No, no, I can’t stop the fire
Love is real live wire
Oh, it’s a burning sensation
Far beyond imagination

Love is like an itching in my heart, tearing it all apart
Just an itching in my heart
And, baby, I can’t scratch it

Keeps me sighing, oh
Keeps me yearning
No mama can’t help me
No daddy can’t help me
I’ve been bitten by the love bug
And I need some information
To help me out of this situation
Now, when you’re ill you take a pill
When you’re thirsty, drink your fill
What you gonna do, oh yeah
When love gets a hold, a hold on you
Love is like an itching in my heart
And, baby, I can’t scratch it

Love is a nagging irritation
Causing my heart complication
Love is a growing infection
And I don’t know the correction
Got me rocking and a-reeling
And I can’t shake the feeling

Love is like an itching in my heart, tearing it all apart
Just an itching in my heart
Baby, I can’t scratch it

Keeps me sighing, oo
Keeps me yearning
Keeps me burning
Keeps me tossing
Keeps me turning
Keeps me yearning
I’ve been bitten by the love bug
And I need some information
To help me out of this situation
Love is a nagging irritation
Causing my heart complication
I’ve been bitten by the love bug
