#477 Lover’s Concerto- The Supremes

How gentle is the rain, that falls gently on the meadow;
Birds high upon the trees serenade the flowers with their melodies.

The Supremes’ “Lover’s Concerto” is a bit of a cheat, since it is based upon one of the best classical songs of all time: Bach’s Minuet in G. If this song sounds familiar, that is why. There are slight differences in the tempo but it is still recognizable.

Lover's Concerto Meaning
The Supremes

I am actually surprised this is not done more often. The only other times I can recall hearing something like this is I heard a bunch of people riffing on Canon in D.  I also heard Alicia Keys write a song to Moonlight Sonata and Barry Manilow will appear later on this list with a take on a classical melody. Neither was as successful as this song.

This is a “happy new love” song. The sky is blue, the sun is shining, flowers are blooming; everything is grand. There is a place for these songs but back in the 50s and 60s pop scene they were much more abundant than they are today. This is one of the best examples of this genre in terms of melody. And the lyrics fit the theme well.

Bach’s “Minuet in G” for Comparison:

Lover’s Concerto Lyrics

How gentle is the rain
That falls softly on the meadow?
Birds, high up in the trees
Serenade the flowers with their melodies

Oh, see there beyond the hill
The bright colors of the rainbow
Some magic from above
Made this day for us just to fall in love

Now, I belong to you
From this day until forever
Just love me tenderly
And I’ll give to you every part of me

Oh, don’t ever make me cry
Through long, lonely nights without love
Be always true to me
Keep this day in your heart eternally

Someday, we shall return
To this place upon the meadow
We’ll walk out in the rain
Hear the birds above singing once again

Oh, you’ll hold me in your arms
And say once again you love me
And if your love is true
Everything will be just as wonderful

You’ll hold me in your arms
And say once again you love me
And if your love is true
Everything will be just as wonderful

You’ll hold me in your arms
And say once again you love me
And if your love is true
Everything will be

#476 Now and Forever- Richard Marx

You make sense of madness/
When my sanity hangs by a thread.

Richard Marx’s “Now and Forever” is another soft-rock classic that gets overlooked as a great song because it is soft rock. The lyrics are strong: it is a love song expressing his gratitude about what he loves about his girl. That is, he provides specifics about what he loves about this girl.

This girl helps him make sense of the madness in his life and brings him comfort when he feels like he is losing his sanity. For this, the author is grateful. He realizes he is holding a fortune in his arms. And he will be her man now and forever. If he only knew she was out there all along.

Now and Forever Meaning
Richard Marx

The instrumentation is solid. A finger-picked acoustic guitar accompanied by strings. I am a fan of this combination. It has a nice guitar solo, tight bridge and a timeless melody. The vocal is strong and I feel that the song is well produced.

Now and Forever Lyrics

Whenever I’m weary
From the battles that rage in my head,
You make sense of madness,
When my sanity hangs by a thread.
I lose my way but still you seem to understand,
Now and forever,
I will be your man.

Sometimes I just hold you,
Too caught up in me to see
I’m holding a fortune,
That heaven has given to me.
I’ll try to show you each and every way I can,
Now and forever,
I will be your man.

Now I can rest my worries and always be sure,
That I won’t be alone anymore.
If I’d only known you were there all the time,
All this time.

Until the day the ocean doesn’t touch the sand,
Now and forever,
I will be your man.
Now and forever,
I will be your man.

#475 Only Time- Enya

Who can say where the road goes/
Where the day flows, only time.

Enya has one of the more recognizable sounds of any contemporary performer. The echo combined with the Irish accent and overdubbed vocals creates a soothing sound that is instantly recognizable.

Some describe Enya’s sound as “New Age”. I am not certain about that. I think it transcends” that into the pop/ soft rock category-not that it is all that important. Like Sade, she seems to be a genre unto herself.

Only Time Meaning
Enya

“Only Time” is Enya’s best song. I especially like the background vocals in the third verse. The message is simple: When and how can we know the answers to questions about important things in our life like love? Answers will be revealed in time. That is the only way. She does not say everything will work out for the best, just that answers will come. Time has a metaphysical quality for Enya: “only time knows” the answer, but it will only be revealed to us if we wait.

If you like Enya, you may also like Sade.

Only Time Lyrics

Who can say where the road goes,
Where the day flows, only time.
And who can say if your love grows,
As your heart chose, only time.

Who can say why your heart sighs,
As your love flies, only time.
And who can say why your heart cries,
When your love lies, only time.

Who can say when the roads meet,
That love might be in your heart.
And who can say when the day sleeps,
If the night keeps all your heart.
Night keeps all your heart.

Who can say if your love grows,
As your heart chose, only time.
And who can say where the road goes,
Where the day flows, only time.

Who knows? Only time
Who knows? Only time
