#10 What’s Going On- Marvin Gaye

You see, war is not the answer/
For only love can conquer hate.

Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” is obviously a historically important song. It marked a turning point when one of Motown’s biggest artists deviated from the tried and true love song formula and started speaking out about the world around him. But that is not what this list is about. It is about great music. And “What’s Going On” still sounds amazing today. The message still resonates and there are some great lines in the song like: “Who are they to judge us/ Simply ‘cause our hair is long?”

What's Going On Meaning
Marvin Gaye

Overall, the title is an interesting one. Gaye is asking, “Seriously, what is going on? Someone please tell me.” This song marked his disillusionment with the lack of progress with the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, and the fact that young voices weren’t being heard.

There are a lot of innovations on the record. I like the talking intro where it sounds like we’re entering a conversation among real people. It helps to give the impression that his message is more relatable. Rather than a solo instrument he sings scat over the background music…where he sings jibberish in the tune of the song.

There is excellent use of the bass, sax and the backup singers. And I am a sucker for the finger snapping. And of course, Gaye’s voice sounds perfect. He might be more well known for his sexy love songs, but his voice delivers a political message just as well. It sounds crisp, concerned and urgent.

Compare this song to some of the other Motown songs on this list to see just what a jump forward this was: The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, or early Stevie Wonder.

What’s Going On Lyrics

Mother, mother,
There’s too many of you crying.
Brother, brother, brother,
There’s far too many of you dying.
You know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some loving here today, yeah.

Father, father,
We don’t need to escalate.
You see, war is not the answer,
For only love can conquer hate.
You know we’ve got to find a way,
To bring some loving here today, oh (Oh).

Picket lines (Sister) and picket signs (Sister),
Don’t punish me (Sister) with brutality (Sister).
Talk to me (Sister), so you can see (Sister),
Oh, what’s going on (What’s going on).
What’s going on (What’s going on)!
Yeah, what’s going on (What’s going on).
Oh, what’s going on.

Mother, mother,
Everybody thinks we’re wrong.
Oh, but who are they to judge us,
Simply ’cause our hair is long.
Oh, you know we’ve got to find a way,
To bring some understanding here today.
Picket lines and picket signs,
Don’t punish me with brutality.
Come on talk to me
So you can see,
What’s going on (What’s going on).
Yeah, what’s going on (What’s going on).
Tell me what’s going on (What’s going on).
I’ll tell you, what’s going on (What’s going on).
Right on, baby, right on.
Right on, baby.
Right on, baby, right on.

#9 Smells Like Teen Spirit-Nirvana/Tori Amos

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous/
Here we are now, entertain us.

Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was extremely revolutionary at the time of release-both the song and video. It came to be an anthem for Gen X angst, 90s fashion, the Seattle music scene, alt-rock and it was the breakout song that launched the careers of perhaps the two most iconic figures of rock in the 90s: Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl. The lyrics are obscure, and to be honest, in the Nirvana version, you could only tell what half of them were at the time. Teenage angst, ambivalence and anarchy are key themes.

Smells Like Teen Spirit Meaning
Nirvana

One of my favorite parts about “Smells like Teen Spirit” is the way the song weaves between hard and softer sounds. In the intro we have stripped down guitar sound, to the full band coming in then back to the stripped-down guitar sound as we enter the first verse. That is roller-coaster of emotion before any words are sung. The softer verses contrast great with the hardcore chorus. The production is amazing: there are a lot of guitar effects that could distract but they enhance the song. Of course, the vocal stylings of Cobain are iconic.

Smells Like Teen Spirit Meaning
Tori Amos

I also want to point out the Tori Amos cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. This is the most radically different cover version of any song that I think I have heard. It is amazing. One thing that is great is that it focuses on the exact opposite aspects of the song that the Nirvana song does, and still captures the essence of the song.

Amos focuses on enunciating the lyrics, and it is exciting to understand them. Her delicate piano playing allows us to focus on how the song is structured well and see it is actually well-written. And her voice enhances the melody. Had the Nirvana version never been released, Amos’ version would be on this list by itself.

Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics

Load up on guns, bring your friends,
It’s fun to lose and to pretend.
She’s over-bored and self-assured,
Oh no, I know a dirty word.

Hello, hello, hello, how low?
Hello, hello, hello, how low?
Hello, hello, hello, how low?
Hello, hello, hello.

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous.
Here we are now, entertain us.
I feel stupid and contagious,
Here we are now, entertain us.
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido.
Yeah, hey.

I’m worse at what I do best,
And for this gift I feel blessed.
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end.

Yeah, hey.

And I forget just why I taste.
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile.
I found it hard, it’s hard to find,
Oh well, whatever, never mind.

Hello, hello, hello, how low?
Hello, hello, hello, how low?
Hello, hello, hello, how low?
Hello, hello, hello.

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous,
Here we are now, entertain us.
I feel stupid and contagious,
Here we are now, entertain us.

A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido.
A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial,
A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial.

#8 Like A Rolling Stone- Bob Dylan

When you ain’t got nothing, you got nothing to lose.
How does it feel?

“Like a Rolling Stone” is the riches-to-rags story of a woman who had it all. Bob Dylan seems to take some delight in her fall from grace but also spends some time pointing out some things that might be useful to her now. Things that she ignored while she was a princess on top of the world. Perhaps there is some empathy in that. Probably not.

This woman was horrible to people when she had the world in her hand and there is a certain satisfaction when someone receives their comeuppance. Dylan was certainly not one to be ashamed of his petty nature.

Like A Rolling Stone Meaning
Highway 61 Dylan

One of the reasons Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” is so popular is because everyone universally despises this type of person. This person who has it all but looks down on others who are “beneath them”. Their fall from grace is cathartic. Another reason the song is successful is because the lyrics are just so damn good. There are so many precious lines, and although the language is slightly difficult, it paints a perfect picture of the woman.

It is crazy to think what this song was competing against at the time.  In 1965 when it was released, The Beatles were singing Help, and Unchained Melody and Wolly Bully charted. This was altogether different. It still sounds fresh today.

“Like a Rolling Stone” is the song that officially led Dylan away from a full-fledged folk artist and he transitioned to rock artist. The sound he created on this record—with the electric guitars and the organ is not folk music. At the time folk purists despised him; his sound was simply evolving.

Like A Rolling Stone Lyrics

Once upon a time you dressed so fine,
Threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn’t you?
People call say ‘beware doll, you’re bound to fall’,
You thought they were all kidding you.
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hanging out.
Now you don’t talk so loud.
Now you don’t seem so proud,
About having to be scrounging your next meal.

How does it feel, how does it feel?
To be without a home?
Like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone.

Ahh you’ve gone to the finest schools, alright Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it.
Nobody’s ever taught you how to live out on the street
And now you’re gonna have to get used to it.
You say you never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize:
He’s not selling any alibis,
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes:
And say “do you want to make a deal”?

How does it feel, how does it feel?
To be on your own, with no direction home?
A complete unknown, like a rolling stone.

Ah you never turned around to see the frowns
On the jugglers and the clowns when they all did tricks for you.
You never understood that it ain’t no good,
You shouldn’t let other people get your kicks for you.
You used to ride on a chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat.
Ain’t it hard when you discovered that
He really wasn’t where it’s at,
After he took from you everything he could steal?

How does it feel, how does it feel?
To have on your own, with no direction home?
Like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone.

Ahh princess on a steeple and all the pretty people
They’re all drinking, thinking that they’ve got it made;
Exchanging all precious gifts,
But you better take your diamond ring, you better pawn it babe.
You used to be so amused,
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used.
Go to him he calls you, you can’t refuse.
When you ain’t got nothing, you got nothing to lose.
You’re invisible now, you’ve got no secrets to conceal.

How does it feel, ah how does it feel?
To be on your own, with no direction home?
Like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone.
