#16 Hotel California- The Eagles

You can check out any time you like/
But you can never leave.

The narrator of “Hotel California” is driving down the highway, doing drugs and in his haze sees a hotel. He could use a rest. “Hotel California” seems to be a brothel or something very close to it. Somewhere where you can get your fantasies fulfilled. He is led to his room and he partakes of the goods. He parties quite hard.

Hotel California Meaning
Eagles-Hell Freezes Over

Eventually he sobers up and wants to quickly leave the hotel. As he leaves the night-man tells him the great line above. Meaning, once you partake in the excesses of “Hotel California”, it will always be a part of you in some way. Another read is once you’ve sampled the high life of California you can’t go back.

The live version of “Hotel California: that The Eagles performed on their Hell Freezes Over Tour was exciting. The intro is different than the live version and while it sounds cool, you can tell the audience doesn’t recognize it at first. Then it transitions into the more famous chord progression and the crowd goes wild.

The dueling guitars of Joe Walsh and Don Felder show two great guitarists at the top of their game. The bass-line for “Hotel California” is underappreciated. You rarely  hear it mentioned as a great bass-line, but it is unique, and adds a lot to the song. Henley’s vocals are great, of course.

For more great Eagles songs.

Hotel California Lyrics

On a dark desert highway
Cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas
Rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance
I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night

There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinkin’ to myself
‘This could be heaven or this could be hell
Then she lit up a candle
And she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (any time of year)
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted
She got the Mercedes Benz, uh
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain
“Please bring me my wine”
He said, “We haven’t had that spirit here since 1969”
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They livin’ it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)
Bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling
The pink champagne on ice
And she said, “We are all just prisoners here of our own device”
And in the master’s chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can’t kill the beast

Last thing I remember
I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
“Relax”, said the night man
“We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave”.

#15 Strawberry Fields Forever- The Beatles

Living is easy with eyes closed/
Misunderstanding all you see.

“Strawberry Fields” is the name of an actual physical place in England, but the Strawberry Fields in this song represents a mystical place—perhaps a mental state—where things are better than how things are on earth. A lot of the success of this song can be attributed to producer George Martin. If you have any doubt, listen to the different outtakes of this song and compare that with where it ended up. Martin did that. This is clearly one of the best examples of great music production ever.

Strawberry Fields Forever Meaning
THE Strawberry fields

There are so many weird effects that help to create the dreamy atmosphere of this song. Some of it is John Lennon’s voice. He sings in a somewhat different voice. But Martin uses effects like recording at different speeds, the arrangement of the horns, the exotic instruments, strings, the mellotron, and an assortment of percussion.

“Strawberry Fields Forever” was one of the first songs The Beatles made after they decided to stop touring. It definitely opened them up creatively. It would be impossible to replicate this sound live. This is also one of the defining moments in psychedelic rock. The Beatles contributed to many genres and others followed.

Strawberry Fields Forever Lyrics

Let me take you down
‘Cause I’m going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real.
And nothing to get hung about.
Strawberry Fields forever.

Living is easy with eyes closed.
Misunderstanding all you see.
It’s getting hard to be someone
But it all works out.
It doesn’t matter much to me.

Let me take you down
‘Cause I’m going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real.
And nothing to get hung about.
Strawberry Fields forever.

No one I think is in my tree,
I mean it must be high or low.
That is you can’t, you know, tune in
But it’s all right.
That is, I think, it’s not too bad.

Let me take you down
‘Cause I’m going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real.
And nothing to get hung about,
Strawberry Fields forever.

Always, no, sometimes think it’s me,
But you know I know when it’s a dream.
I think, er, no, I mean, er, yes
But it’s all wrong,
That is I think I disagree.

Let me take you down
‘Cause I’m going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real.
And nothing to get hung about,
Strawberry Fields forever.
Strawberry Fields forever.
Strawberry Fields forever.

#14 Landslide- Fleetwood Mac

Even children get older/
And I’m gettin’ older, too.

Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” is about facing challenging decisions in your life. Will you be up to it, even if others don’t think you will be? Or will you let life’s challenges take away all your progress and success right down to the bottom. It might take something as simple as loosing faith in yourself to lose everything. The landslide will bring you crashing down. But Nicks feels a renewed strength in herself.

Fleetwood Mac Landslide Meaning
Stevie

The arraignment of “Landslide” is simple, and it really is one of the most likable rock songs of all-time. No one dislikes Landslide. The finger-picking arrangement by Lindsey sounds great coupled with Stevie singing in her prime.

For aspiring guitar players, “Landslide” is a relatively easy song to learn (minus the guitar solo) so this might be a neat place to start. I think this will go down as Fleetwood’s most enduring song. Though Nicks takes the top spot, it is nice to see that her, McVie and Buckingham each had songs on this list. That is the making of an all-star band.

Landslide Lyrics

I took my love, I took it down.
Climbed a mountain and I turned around.
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills,
‘Til the landslide brought me down.

Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin’ ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Mmm

Well, I’ve been ‘fraid of changin’
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you.
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older,
And I’m gettin’ older, too.

Well, I’ve been ‘fraid of changin’
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you.
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older,
And I’m gettin’ older, too.
I’m gettin’ older, too.

Ah, take my love, take it down.
Oh, climb a mountain and turn around.
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well, the landslide will bring it down.
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well, the landslide will bring it down.
Oh, the landslide will bring it down.
