#40 Time in a Bottle- Jim Croce

If I had a box just for wishes/
And dreams that had never come true/
The box would be empty…

Jim Croce’s “Time in a Bottle”  deals with mortality in a way that few other successful songs do. Tragically, the song would not be a hit until after Jim Croce’s death in a plane crash in the early 70s. The one bright side can be seen in the lyric above. It speaks about how all of his dreams had basically come true. It is a fantastic concept for a song.

Time in A Bottle Meaning
Croce

Unfortunately, Croce did not get to enjoy them for long. He says, “There never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them.” Very prescient. Croce is one of the more underrated singer/songwriters of his generation. He wrote great love songs, but also wrote those fun “bar songs” (for lack of a better term) like Leroy Brown and You Don’t Mess Around With Jim.

The sound on “Time in a Bottle” is haunting. The combination of the finger-picking, the minor chords and Croce’s voice…and the subject matter make the song overwhelming at times. Notice how he weaves between the serious verses and the lighter choruses (“There never seems to be enough time..”). This is Croce’s fourth song on the top 500 list which means he should be a shoe-in for Rock n Roll Hall of Fame consideration. It doesn’t seem particularly controversial, and I am surprised it hasn’t happened.

Time in a Bottle Lyrics

If I could save time in a bottle,
The first thing that I’d like to do-
Is to save every day
‘Til eternity passes away.
Just to spend them with you.

If I could make days last forever,
If words could make wishes come true.
I’d save every day like a treasure and then
Again, I would spend them with you.

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them.
I’ve looked around enough to know,
That you’re the one I want to go
Through time with.

If I had a box just for wishes,
And dreams that had never come true;
The box would be empty
Except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you.

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do
Once you find them.
I’ve looked around enough to know
That you’re the one I want to go
Through time with.

#39 For All We Know- Bread/ The Carpenters

Love, look at the two of us/
Strangers in many ways.

You’ve heard The Carpenters version of “For All We Know”. It is great, but did you know it was written by Bread? Their version is superior. It was only released on one of their box sets and it is almost impossible to find. It is also incredibly short at 1:23. The Carpenters fixed this by singing the verse twice. It appears that Bread never had any intention of releasing the song, so the only recording is just the one-time run-through of the verse. However, it is so captivating it is extremely worthy of this spot.

For All We Know Meaning Bread
Bread

“For All We Know” is not sung by the usual lead singer of Bread, David Gates, it is sung by guitarist James Griffin. The song’s theme is unique. It talks about the excitement of meeting someone new, but in the context of getting to take a lifetime to get to know everything about them. This seems to be one of the truer expressions of love that we find in all of music.

The Carpenters

Bread’s sound is very different here, but it shows how versatile the band is.  With “For All We Know”, and If, we see that they are very much in the singer-songwriter vein of the great artists of the 70s in addition to the hits machine that delivered ten top ten radio hits. I love the subtle sound of the guitar and Griffin’s voice. There are no accouterments, just a singer and his guitar (and another guitar). This song is a diamond in the rough and I encourage you to give it a listen.

For what it is worth, The Carpenter’s version on its own would also appear on this list, but together, the two versions push them into the top 50.

For All We Know Lyrics

Love, look at the two of us-
Strangers in many ways.
We’ve got a lifetime to share,
So much to say,
And as we go
From day to day.
I’ll feel you close to me.
But time alone will tell.
Let’s take a lifetime to say,
“I knew you well”
For only time will tell us so,
And love may grow
For all we know.

Love, look at the two of us-
Strangers in many ways.
Let’s take a lifetime to say,
“I knew you well”.
For only time will tell us so,
And love may grow
For all we know.

#38 My Hero (acoustic)- Foo Fighters

There goes my hero…he’s ordinary.

The Foo Fighter’s “My Hero” is a tribute to the everyday heroes. Specifically, the ones who aren’t famous rock stars or athletes…they’re “ordinary”. Obviously anyone who is a hero isn’t ordinary. People who are mother’s and fathers, or doctors or teachers…just ordinary good people. We hear songs all the time about the extra-ordinary people. This is a song for the everyday heroes.

This song reminds me of a couple things. Charles Barkley got a lot of shit from the media when he said, “I am not a role model”. He was trying to express something similar to what Grohl is saying. Whenever this song plays it always reminds me of my dad.

My Hero meaning
Foo Fighters

For the definitive version of the song, listen to Grohl play live from the Howard Stern Show in 1999 (above). Interestingly, I think this is the second song on this list where I have said the definitive version is from the Stern Show. I can’t think of another show that had a signature performance performed on it. (Sia’s performance of Diamonds was the other, and Imagine Dragon’s Shots would be close too, but they have duplicated that performance elsewhere).

My Hero Lyrics

Too alarmin’ now to talk about
Take your pictures down and shake it out
Truth or consequence, say it aloud
Use that evidence, race it around

There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He’s ordinary

Don’t the best of them bleed it out
While the rest of them peter out?
Truth or consequence, say it aloud
Use that evidence, race it around

There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He’s ordinary

Kudos, my hero, leavin’ all the mess
You know my hero, the one that’s on
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He’s ordinary
There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He’s ordinary.
