#91 Kathy’s Song- Simon & Garfunkel

I know that I am like the rain/
There but for the grace of you go I.

Just as Springsteen had “Mary”–his go to muse–Simon has “Kathy”. Simon and Garfunkel’s “Kathy’s Song” is his love song to her– though she is not mentioned by name in the song (other than the title). He feels raindrops while walking outside and it makes him think of his girlfriend who is across the sea. He sends his kisses and love, but the distance is tearing him apart.

He is having difficulty working because all he can do is think of Kathy. But he remains steadfast in his love for her and their relationship, and he is grateful for her. The language he uses is quite poetic, beautiful really.

Kathy's Song Meaning
Paul Simon

If there is any doubt what a master Simon is, listen to this live recording. It is just him on guitar and he sings “Kathy’s Song” without Garfunkel on this track.  His voice is soft, it almost sounds embarrassed, but the emotions he is expressing are quite romantic. Listen to the way he captures the crowd with just him and a guitar. In this live version he adds a bit of a guitar solo at the end that wraps up the song quite nicely.

Kathy’s Song Lyrics

I hear the drizzle of the rain.
Like a memory it falls,
Soft and warm continuing…
Tapping on my roof and walls.

And from the shelter of my mind,
Through the window of my eyes.
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies.

My mind’s distracted and diffused.
My thoughts are many miles away.
They lie with you when you’re asleep,
And kiss you when you start your day.

And a song I was writing is left undone.
I don’t know why I spend my time
Writing songs I can’t believe;
With words that tear and strain to rhyme.

And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true.
I stand alone without beliefs,
The only truth I know is you.

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die.
I know that I am like the rain,
There but for the grace of you go I.

#90 Elastic Heart (acoustic)- Sia

Well I’ve got thick skin and an elastic heart/
But your blade it might be too sharp.

“Elastic Heart” may be Sia’s best song. The concept for the song—her heart is elastic, and it won’t be broken by the sharp blades of her broken relationships is fantastic. When she sings, “You won’t break me” it is as emotionally moving as any her anthems (and her anthems are great).

Elastic Heart Meaning
Sia

The simple acoustic piano in “Elastic Heart” is a great production decision. Most of the time both the piano and the non-piano version of Sia’s music are fantastic, but on “Elastic Heart”,  the piano version is truly exceptional. I like hearing Sia’s voice without all the drum tracks that mask her voice.

What is most amazing about Sia is not that she has five or so top 500 songs of all-time. (Even though that is amazing, and only topped by a couple bands and artists). It is that she is so prolific after the age of 35.  There are only two other artists who had their greatest songs after that age: Leonard Cohen and Bonnie Raitt.

There are so many artists who once they hit about that age they are done. There are so many in that category that I don’t even need to name them.  It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Sia’s next album was her best, but I can’t say that about any other artist over 30. Perhaps it is because she achieved fame relatively late in life. Perhaps Sia is just one of a kind.

Elastic Heart Lyrics

And another one bites the dust
But why can I not conquer love?
And I might’ve thought that we were one
Wanted to fight this war without weapons
And I want it and I wanted it bad
But there were so many red flags
Now another one bites the dust
Yeah let’s be clear, I trust no one

You did not break me
I’m still fighting for peace

Well I’ve got thick skin and an elastic heart
But your blade it might be too sharp
I’m like a rubber band until you pull too hard
Yeah I may snap and I move fast
You won’t see me fall apart
‘Cause I’ve got an elastic heart

I’ve got an elastic heart
Yeah, I’ve got an elastic heart
And I will stay up through the night
Yeah let’s be clear, I won’t close my eyes
And I know that I can survive
I walked through fire to save my life
And I want it, I want my life so bad
And I’m doing everything I can
Then another one bites the dust
It’s hard to lose a chosen one

You did not break me
I’m still fighting for peace

Oh, I’ve got thick skin and an elastic heart
But your blade it might be too sharp
I’m like a rubber band until you pull too hard
Yeah I may snap and I move fast
You won’t see me fall apart
‘Cause I’ve got an elastic heart

Oh, and I’ve got thick skin and an elastic heart
But your blade it might be too sharp
I’m like a rubber band until you pull too hard
Yeah I may snap and I move fast
You won’t see me fall apart
No, ’cause I’ve got an elastic heart

And I’ve got thick skin and an elastic heart
But your blade it might be too sharp
I’m like a rubber band until you pull too hard
Yeah I may snap and I move fast
You won’t see me fall apart
‘Cause I’ve got an elastic heart

I’ve got an elastic heart
Yeah, I’ve got an elastic heart

#89 Bittersweet Symphony- The Verve

it’s a bittersweet symphony this life/
Trying to make ends meet, you’re a slave to the money then you die.

“Bittersweet Symphony” is about a man who wants to be a better version of himself–and knows he can be—but the grind of everyday life prevents him from being his best self. For example, imagine the band that The Verve could have been if they had the financial freedom to create instead of haggling with The Stones.

The song also asks serious questions about fate. We are stuck “in our mold” and we “know” that we could get out of it with just a little luck or divine intervention, but can we really? And of course, there are our base needs that seem to be always driving us. Ultimately, I think Ashcroft would believe that we can change, but I think he makes an equally compelling case against it.

There are very few songs that have the sense of rhythm that “Bittersweet Symphony” does. Originally, I suspected it might be a difference in time signature, but it isn’t that—it’s standard. Part of it is the violins. A lot of it is the hypnotic, trance-like melody with very consistent drum beat.

Bitterweet Symphony Meaning
The Verve

The story behind The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony” is tragic. The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony” is one of the best songs of the 90s.  When it came out, everybody, regardless of their taste in music recognized it as something special and unique. Unique! Then The Rolling Stones sued them because they said it lifted a bar from a cover version of their song The Last Time.

So, for twenty years The Rolling Stones got paid because they have better lawyers and bigger pockets. They sued and received co-writing credit. Around 2019 they relinquished all future royalties to the song but didn’t disavow their song-writing credit and past royalties (of course). Fuck The Stones.

Bittersweet Symphony Lyrics

Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony this life
Trying to make ends meet, you’re a slave to the money then you die.
I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah.
No change, I can’t change, I can’t change, I can’t change,
but I’m here in my mold, I am here in my mold.
But I’m a million different people from one day to the next
I can’t change my mold, no, no, no, no, no, no, no

Well I never pray,
But tonight I’m on my knees, yeah.
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah.
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now.
But the airwaves are clean and there’s nobody singing to me now.

No change, I can’t change, I can’t change, I can’t change,
But I’m here in my mold, I am here in my mold.
And I’m a million different people from one day to the next
I can’t change my mold, no, no, no, no, no, no, no

Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony this life.
Trying to make ends meet, trying to find some money then you die.
I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah.
No change, I can’t change, I can’t change, I can’t change,
but I’m here in my mold, I am here in my mold.
But I’m a million different people from one day to the next
I can’t change my mold, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
I can’t change my mold, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
I can’t change my mold, no, no, no, no, no, no, no

It justs sex and violence melody and silence
It justs sex and violence melody and silence (I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down)
It’s just sex and violence melody and silence
It’s just sex and violence melody and silence
It’s just sex and violence melody and silence (I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down)
(It’s just sex and violence melody and silence)Been down
