#97 We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions- Queen

And bad mistakes/
I’ve made a few.

If you ever wonder about the power of a good chorus, wonder no more. It is amazing that two songs by sung by Freddy Mercury are the top songs at played at football games. When I was young, I thought these songs were like “Take me out to the Ballgame”, in that they were just stadium songs. That’s how ubiquitous they were at the games.

However, as I have grown, I have grown to appreciate the musicianship and amazing vocals on “We Will Rock You” and “We are the Champions”. Each musician has highlights throughout the two songs. You can hear nuanced piano playing in “We are the Champions”. Both songs have great guitar solos by Brian May.

We Are the Champions Meaning
Queen

Apart from the choruses, the lyrics are a bit lacking, but perhaps any lyrics would be when you compare them to these standards. You can also hear a bit of Queen’s great harmonies, especially in “We are the champions”.

The notes/chords they harmonize on are quite complex—not many bands could pull that off. Mercury sounds great, and his theatrical delivery works great for two anthems. I suppose this is the greatest anthem of all time. One contender might be “Hey Jude”. Will it finish higher on this list?

More great songs by Queen.

We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions Lyrics

I’ve paid my dues
Time after time
I’ve done my sentence
But committed no crime
And bad mistakes
I’ve made a few
I’ve had my share of sand kicked in my face
But I’ve come through

We are the champions, my friends
And we’ll keep on fighting ’til the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
‘Cause we are the champions of the world

I’ve taken my bows
And my curtain calls
You brought me fame and fortune and everything that goes with it
I thank you all

But it’s been no bed of roses
No pleasure cruise
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race
And I ain’t gonna lose

We are the champions, my friends
And we’ll keep on fighting ’til the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
‘Cause we are the champions of the world

We are the champions, my friends
And we’ll keep on fighting ’til the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
‘Cause we are the champions

#96 Heartbeats- The Knife/ Jose Gonzales

We had a promise made/
Four hands and then away.

In “Heartbeats”, The Knife’s sound like a mix between the 80s, synthesizer music and Blondie. I find it hard to justify the choice of a synthesizer in almost all songs. It rarely sounds like the ideal choice–but here it is fantastic.

Jose Gonzales’ cover version is extremely different and equally amazing. You rarely hear a cover version so different. That is exciting. Both seem to capture a different essence of the song. But what is the song trying to say?

Heartbeats the knife Meaning
The Knife

The lyrics of “Heartbeats” tell the story of two people who meet each other and agree to a casual arrangement (see the quote above). They call it a “promise”—but these things cannot be promised. The two have a whirlwind two-week affair. The narrator falls in love. The narrator broke the promise.

Jose Gonzalez

At some point along the way the narrator believes that the terms of their arraignment had changed on both sides. Perhaps it was due to their lover’s cold heart and devilish hands, perhaps it was a misunderstanding. Regardless, at the end of the two weeks, the relationship is over, and the narrator is devastated and not even God could comfort them.

Jose Gonzales’ version of “Heartbeats” presents the story as a sad tale of heartbreak. The Knife’s version sounds like an angry, confused retelling of the events. Just as each of us would respond to the events differently it makes sense that there could be two different interpretations of the same tale.

Heartbeat Lyrics

One night to be confused.
One night to speed up truth.
We had a promise made,
Four hands and then away.

Both under influence,
We had divine scent.
To know what to say,
Mind is a razor blade.

To call for hands of above
To lean on.
Wouldn’t be good enough
For me, no.

One night of magic rush,
The start a simple touch.
One night to push and scream
And then relief.

Ten days of perfect tunes,
The colors red and blue.
We had a promise made,
We were in love.

To call for hands of above
To lean on.
Wouldn’t be good enough
For me, no.

To call for hands of above
To lean on,
Wouldn’t be good enough…

And you, you knew the hands of the devil.
And you, kept us awake with wolfs teeth.
Sharing different heartbeats
In one night.

To call for hands of above
To lean on.
Wouldn’t be good enough
For me, no.

To call for hands of above
To lean on.
Wouldn’t be good enough…

#95 Who Knows Where Time Goes- Fairpoint Convention

And I am not alone while my love is near me/
I know it will be so until it’s time to go.

Fairpoint Convention’s “Who Knows Where Time Goes” is an amazing song about love and the passage of time. Time passes so quickly regardless–but isn’t it so much better when it is with someone you love? And the time passes so much faster. But this is no reason to be afraid of time. When you are with someone you love, your love can grow as the time goes.

Sandy Denny wrote the song and sings lead. She was lead singer of Fairpoint Convention and the Strawbs. But this was the song that put her in the history books. Her version of “Who Knows Where Time Goes” with Fairpoint Convention is somewhat folk-rock, but there are other arrangements by her that offer other sounds.

Fairpoint Convention

You must check out Nina Simone’s version of “Who Knows Where Time Goes”. Simone’s version seems to focus on the theme of Time more than Love, simply due to her phrasing. It is a live performance and is amazing. It definitely elevates the ranking on this list to have two beautiful versions that are so different.

Simone is who you want to cover your song. She elevates every song she sings with her beautiful reinterpretations and expert piano playing. Her voice is so unique.

Who Knows Where Time Goes? Lyrics

Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving.
But how can they know it’s time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming,
I have no thought of time.

For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?

Sad, deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving.
Ah, but then you know it’s time for them to go.
But I will still be here, I have no thought of leaving.
I do not count the time.

For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?

And I am not alone while my love is near me.
I know it will be so until it’s time to go.
So come the storms of winter and then
The birds in spring again,
I have no fear of time.

For who knows how my love grows?
And who knows where the time goes?
