#125 Ruby Tuesday- The Rolling Stones

“There’s no time to lose, ” I heard her say/
Catch your dreams before they slip away.

Mick—a renowned playboy—has seemed to have met his match in Ruby. Ruby seems to be a tough nut to crack. Ruby doesn’t like to talk about the past as it’s irrelevant.  And she has big dreams about the future that she is anxious to obtain. Ruby changes so often that it seems as if you almost don’t even know her. But that intrigues Jagger more.

Is it possible that Ruby is even more free-spirited than the legendary Jagger? Perhaps. Ultimately, Ruby leaves–of course. He will miss her…or what he thinks he knows about her.

Ruby Tuesday Meaning
the Stones

“Ruby Tuesday” is a fantastic character because she is described so specifically that you know she must have been based on a real person. That is fascinating. As is Ruby. The music is great, especially the choice of a recorder. Sometimes a recorder can be a real easy thing to screw up. Most of the time it is just annoying but here it is perfect. They also use an upright bass to fill out one of their signature (and underrated) songs.

The Rolling Stones “Ruby Tuesday” often gets overlooked because the name is a bit silly. But that is the point. He knows her name is “Ruby” but other than that he knows nothing about her.  She changes all the time; did he ever know her? The lyrics, music and arraignment are quietly complex. Just like Ruby.

Ruby Tuesday Lyrics

She would never say where she came from.
Yesterday don’t matter if it’s gone.
While the sun is bright,
Or in the darkest night,
No one knows, she comes and goes.

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday.
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day.
Still I’m gonna miss you.

Don’t question why she needs to be so free.
She’ll tell you it’s the only way to be.
She just can’t be chained
To a life where nothing’s gained,
Or nothing’s lost, at such a cost.

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday.
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day.
Still I’m gonna miss you

“There’s no time to lose, ” I heard her say.
“Catch your dreams before they slip away”.
Dying all the time.
Lose your dreams and you will lose your mind.
Ain’t life unkind?

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday.
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day.
Still I’m gonna miss you.

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday.
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day.
Still I’m gonna miss you.

#124 All The Man That I Need- Whitney Houston

And in the morning when I kiss his eyes/
He takes me down and rocks me slow.

Whitney Houston’s “All The Man That I Need” is an incredibly well-written song. It rightfully gets overshadowed by Whitney’s amazing performance. I think Whitney Houston is one of the most under-rated performers—to music critics. Like what are they listening to?

Of course, fans adore her.

The way that Whitney hits the high notes on this song has practically ruined 20 years of American Idol and The Voice and the like. Every female singer thinks they should try to do something like this. They shouldn’t. They just shouldn’t. It would be like someone in a slam dunk contest sticking his tongue out. It has already been done by the best. Find a new gimmick.

All The Man That I Need Meaning
Whitney

Back to the song, the lyrics are remarkable sensual. It features the lyrics “he fills me up”. I suppose that could be interpreted in different ways. Perhaps she is talking “spiritually or emotionally”. I think the sax solo sounds good.  Also, I like the finger-snapping. You can rarely go wrong with that.

All the Man That I Need Lyrics

I used to cry myself to sleep at night
But that was all before he came
I thought love had to hurt to turn out right
But now he’s here
It’s not the same, it’s not the same

He fills me up
He gives me love
More love than I’ve ever seen
He’s all I’ve got
He’s all I’ve got in this world
But he’s all the man that I need

And in the morning when I kiss his eyes
He takes me down and rocks me slow
And in the evening when the moon is high
He holds me close and won’t let go
He won’t let go

He fills me up
He gives me love
More love than I’ve ever seen
He’s all I’ve got
He’s all I’ve got in this world
But he’s all the man that I need

He fills me up
He gives me love
More love than I’ve ever seen
He’s all I’ve got
He’s all I’ve got in this world
But he’s all the man that I need

He fills me up
He gives me love
More love than I’ve ever seen
He’s all I’ve got
He’s all I’ve got in this world
But he’s all the man that I need

#123 The Loves Still Growing- Buzzy Linhart

It’s time to say
It’s time to know
That it’s O.K., that some must go.

Buzzy Linhart is not so much a one-hit wonder as a no-hit wonder. “The Love’s Still Growing” was definitely not a hit. It never got a lot of exposure. But this list is not about that. It is about greatness. There are so many things to love about this song. The raw-ness with which Buzzy expresses his heartbreak is as real as it gets. It is not just the lyrics—though the lyrics deliver.

The Loves Still Growing meaning
Buzzy Linhart

The vocal performance is a bit reminiscent of Joe Cocker’s “You are so Beautiful”. The captured take is so impassioned that you can’t imagine a live performance or a cover ever matching it.

The musicianship in “The Love’s Still Growing” is experimental and captures the emotion of the song well. Great production. If you are a fan of the drums there is a lot here for you. If you like psychedelic music, you’ll love this. If you are a fan of songs about heartbreak, this one’s for you. Anyone who loves great rock music should give Buzzy Linhart a listen.

The Loves Still Growing Lyrics

And I’m so high
I can’t go on.
Oh but I
Can sing this song.

Because the love’s still growing.
And the love’s still growing.

Some folk say,
“That all hope is gone”
But today, the world is one.

Because the love’s still growing.
And the love’s still growing.

It’s time to say,
It’s time to know,
that “it’s O.K.”,
that some must go.
