#134 Diamonds- Sia/ Rihanna

At first sight I felt the energy of sun rays/
I saw the life inside your eyes.

Rihanna made “Diamonds” famous and her version is great. Had I never heard Sia sing this song, Rihanna’s version would still be on this list. Then I heard Sia sing “Diamonds” on The Howard Stern Show live with just her and a piano. She put zero effort into the production.

Instantly you could see that Sia was the creative force behind the song and that there was something special about her singing it. Peculiarly, Rihanna mimics Sia’s Australian accent! That is so bizarre. What is even more bizarre is that it works for her.

Diamonds Greatest alltime song meaning
Sia

The lyrics are standard Sia: very anthem-y. I think she does these songs the best of anyone this side of Queen. For some reason they don’t feel contrite to me. They are able to achieve the right mix of fun and uplifting without feeling dumbed down or angry.

Diamonds Meaning
Rihanna

I would like to see Rihanna release more songs like this and Stay. I like her voice doing up-tempo ballads. I am not really into the other stuff she does.

Diamonds Lyrics

Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond.

Find light in the beautiful sea, I choose to be happy.
You and I, you and I, we’re like diamonds in the sky.
You’re a shooting star I see, a vision of ecstasy.
When you hold me, I’m alive,
We’re like diamonds in the sky.

I knew that we’d become one right away;
Oh, right away.
At first sight I felt the energy of sun rays,
I saw the life inside your eyes.

So shine bright tonight,
You and I.
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.
Eye to eye,
So alive!
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.

Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond,
Shining bright like a diamond,
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.

Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond,
Shining bright like a diamond,
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.

Palms rise to the universe, as we moonshine and molly.
Feel the warmth, we’ll never die,
We’re like diamonds in the sky.

You’re a shooting star I see, a vision of ecstasy.
When you hold me, I’m alive.
We’re like diamonds in the sky.
At first sight I felt the energy of sun rays.
I saw the life inside your eyes.

So shine bright
Tonight,
You and I,
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.
Eye to eye,
So alive!
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.

Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond,
Shining bright like a diamond,
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.

Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond,
Shining bright like a diamond,
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.

Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond.

So shine bright
Tonight,
You and I.
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky,
Eye to eye,
So alive!
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky,
Shine bright like a diamond,

#133 Hey Joe- Jimi Hendrix

I’m goin’ down to shoot my old lady/
You know I caught her messin’ round with another man. And that ain’t cool.

Jimi Hendrix “Hey Joe” is so badass. I always thought it was written by Hendrix, but it turns out it was written by a man named Billy Roberts. I know that The Byrds recorded the song first, but to say the song is different is an understatement.

The ultimate improvement you can make to a song when you cover it is to “make it your own”…and Jimi certainly did. He slowed down the tempo, emphasized the guitar and bass and simplified the lyrics. He made it his own.

Hey Joe meaning
Jimi

The way Jimi describes Joe is great. Joe caught his woman with another man and wants to shoot her.  But it isn’t so much his words, it’s how he’s saying the words. Hendrix tells the wild story of trying to talk Joe out of killing his own wife. By the end of the song, Jimi is sympathetic to Joe saying, “Shoot her one more time for me”! “You better get outta here to Mexico.” I love it. “Hey Joe” is one of Jimi’s best.

His performance of this song at the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967 is the most outrageous live performance I have ever seen. Have you seen it? I almost don’t want to spoil it but SPOILERS ahead… (Go watch it above).

He plays guitar with his teeth! And plays guitar behind his back! And sings while chewing gum. And the song sounds perfect. He was such a great showman. This performance is breathtaking.

Hey Joe Lyrics

Hey Joe,
Where you goin’ with that gun in your hand?
Hey Joe,
I said “where you goin’ with that gun in your hand?”
Alright.

“I’m goin down to shoot my old lady,
You know I caught her messin’ ’round with another man.
I’m goin’ down to shoot my old lady,
You know I caught her messin’ ’round with another man.”
And that ain’t too cool.
(Ah-backing vocal on each line)
Uh, hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman down,
You shot her down now.

Uh, hey Joe, I heard you shot you old lady down,
You shot her down to the ground. Yeah!
Yes, I did, I shot her
You know I caught her messin’ ’round,
Messin’ ’round town.
Uh, yes I did, I shot her,
You know I caught my old lady messin’ ’round town.
And I gave her the gun and I shot her!

Alright
(Ah! Hey Joe)
Shoot her one more time again, baby!

#132 Fire & Rain- James Taylor

I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend/
But I always thought that I’d see you again.

Pre-internet, there was a lot of lore about the meaning of  James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain” and the events that led to James Taylor writing it. The story was mostly right. It concentrated on how he wrote the song about his stay in a mental hospital. Supposedly that is true, but the more interesting part about the song is that he wrote this after hearing about his friend dying. The song makes a lot more sense in this context.

Fire & Rain song meaning
Taylor

“Fire and Rain” is about a guy who has seen everything—perhaps been leading a fast lifestyle—but felt there was one certainty in his life. He could always call up his friend Susan and she would be there to share memories with. Or just to talk to. We take it for granted that people in our lives will always be there. In Taylor’s case, his friend committed suicide and he never had the chance to see her again.

A little bit of rock minutiae—that is Carole King playing piano in the background. Supposedly she was inspired to write You’ve got a friend” when she heard this. He would go on to cover that song. One thing I like about this song is the bass—it is upright and bowed. I would like to hear that more in rock. It is a unique sound.

Fire & Rain Lyrics

Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Susanne the plans they made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can’t remember who to send it to

I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain
I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I’d see you again

Won’t you look down upon me, jesus
You’ve got to help me make a stand
You’ve just got to see me through another day
My body’s aching and my time is at hand
And I won’t make it any other way

Oh, I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain
I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I’d see you again

Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it’ll turn your head around
Well, there’s hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things
To come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground

Oh, I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain
I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I’d see you, baby, one more time again, now

Thought I’d see you one more time again
There’s just a few things coming my way this time around, now
Thought I’d see you, thought I’d see you fire and rain, now
