#164 Torn- Natalie Imbruglia

Illusion never changed into something real/
Wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn.

In “Torn” Natalie Imbruglia is dating someone new. Her initial impression of him favorable. Is her impression accurate? Is this the good man that could change her life and be a great partner? All of her initial impressions give her hope. She falls for him. But it turns out it was a façade. He is not that guy after all. Her dreams and illusions are “Torn” apart and replaced with the reality that she was wrong.

Torn Greatest song alltime

She feels ashamed that she was deceived—or at the least that she misjudged his character so badly. Just as her dreams are torn apart, her body begins to be torn apart as well, as she subconsciously punishes herself mentally for her mistake.

“Torn” starts out so happy. Bright major chords in the intro transition quickly into a darker song. Imbruglia sings the song as if she is exasperated and confused…and tired of the games. She makes good choices in her vocal. The background vocals are strong but go mostly unnoticed. The strength of the song may be the guitar work. It is muted during the verse and chorus but rocks during the ending solo. It sounds like she is erupting into the solo.

Torn Lyrics

I thought I saw a man brought to life.
He was warm, he came around like he was dignified.
He showed me what it was to cry.

Well, you couldn’t be that man I adored.
You don’t seem to know,
Or seem to care what your heart is for.
But I don’t know him anymore.

There’s nothin’ where he used to lie,
The conversation has run dry.
That’s what’s goin’ on.
Nothing’s fine, I’m torn.

I’m all out of faith,
This is how I feel.
I’m cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor.

Illusion never changed
Into something real.
I’m wide awake and I can see
The perfect sky is torn.

You’re a little late,
I’m already torn.

So I guess the fortune teller’s right.
Should’ve seen just what was there
And not some holy light.
But you crawled beneath my veins and now.

I don’t care, I had no luck,
I don’t miss it all that much.
There’s just so many things
That I can touch, I’m torn.

I’m all out of faith,
This is how I feel.
I’m cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor.

Illusion never changed
Into something real.
I’m wide awake and I can see
The perfect sky is torn.

You’re a little late
I’m already torn.
Torn.

There’s nothing where he used to lie,
My inspiration has run dry.
And that’s what’s goin’ on.
Nothing’s right, I’m torn.

I’m all out of faith
This is how I feel.
I’m cold and I am shamed,
Lying naked on the floor.

Illusion never changed
Into something real.
I’m wide awake and I can see
The perfect sky is torn.

I’m all out of faith,
This is how I feel.
I’m cold and I’m ashamed
Bound and broken on the floor.

You’re a little late.
I’m already torn.
Torn.
Oh

#163 True Love Waits (live)- RadioHead

I’m not living/
I’m just killing time.

Radiohead’s “True Love Waits” is a song is about a codependent, toxic relationship. The woman (who speaks in the first verse) is willing to give up her beliefs and start dressing younger to make the man want to be with her. Anything–as long as her lover doesn’t leave. It is clear she is not happy.

True Love Waits

The man isn’t happy either. He likes her smile and tiny hands; he is sexually attracted to her. But, he admits he isn’t truly living, he is just killing time with her.  At the same time he pleads with her: “please don’t leave”.

Both lovers seem to acknowledge that there is a such thing as true love out there: maybe when they were younger, maybe in the old days, but not between them; not now. Inertia keeps them together, even though deep-down they both would rather be with different people.

The song is haunting and the instrumentation is simple. Yorke’s falsetto is amazing. The live version really adds a lot of emotion to the song. It is interesting that sometimes the short simple songs can have the strongest emotional impact.

True Love Waits Lyrics

I’ll drown my beliefs,
To have your babies.
I’ll dress like your niece,
And wash your swollen feet.

Just don’t leave.
Don’t leave.

I’m not living.
I’m just killing time.
Your tiny hands,
Your crazy kitten smile.

Just don’t leave.
Don’t leave.

And true love waits
In haunted attics.
And true love lives
On lollipops and crisps.

Just don’t leave,
Don’t leave.

#162 All The Young Dudes- Mott The Hoople

And Freddy’s got spots from ripping off the stars from his face/
Funky little boat race.

“All the Young Dudes” by Mott The Hoople is not necessarily the most exegetically friendly song. Are the lyrics nonsense? I don’t think so, but I think Bowie was deliberately obscuring them, because, well, why not?

It sounds like a song about how the troubles of youth are a serious concern, but they are trivialized by the older population (the dad) and the news. So, the meaning seems to be that the youth should join the movement to spread the news.

All the Young Dudes meaning
Mott the Hoople

The combination of sounds here is what makes this song amazing. You rarely hear a distorted electric guitar with a Hammond organ. The hand-clapping and background singing is extremely well done. The call and answer background singing is an effect technique that you don’t see everyday. The song feels live. It feels like we were dropped in the middle of a concert. It has that raw feel. The song is a bit ahead of its time in mentioning cross dressing as a normal thing.

Heroes

All The Young Dudes Lyrics

Well, Billy rapped all night about his suicide,
How he’d kick it in the head when he was twenty-five.
Speed jive, don’t want to stay alive,
When you’re twenty-five.

And Wendy’s stealing clothes from Marks & Sparks,
And Freddy’s got spots from ripping off the stars from his face,
Funky little boat race.
Television man is crazy saying we’re juvenile delinquent wrecks,
Oh, man, I need TV when I’ve got T.Rex.
Oh brother, you guessed,
I’m a dude, dad!

All the young dudes (hey dudes!)
Carry the news (where are you?)
Boogaloo dudes (stand up, come on)
Carry the news.
All the young dudes (I want to hear you),
Carry the news (I want to see you),
Boogaloo dudes (I want to talk to you, all of you)
Carry the news (now).

Lucy looks sweet ’cause he dresses like a queen,
But he can kick like a mule, it’s a real mean team.
But we can love,
Oh yes, we can love.

And my brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones,
We never got it off on that revolution stuff.
What a drag, too many snags.

Now I’ve drunk a lot of wine and I’m feeling fine,
Got to race some cat to bed.
Oh, is that concrete all around,
Or is it in my head?
Yeah,
I’m a dude, dad.

All the young dudes (hey dudes)
Carry the news (where are you?)
Boogaloo dudes (stand up),
Carry the news.
All the young dudes (I want to hear you)
Carry the news (I want to see you)
Boogaloo dudes (I want to relate to you)
Carry the news
All the young dudes (what dudes?)
Carry the news (let’s hear the news, come on)
Boogaloo dudes (I want to kick you)
Carry the news,
All the young dudes,
(With the glasses),
Carry the news (I want you)
Boogaloo dudes (I want you in the front)
Carry the news (now)

(Now, you’re his friends)
All the young dudes (now you bring him down)
(‘Cause I want him)
Carry the news
Boogaloo dudes (I want him right here)
(Bring him, come on)
Carry the news (bring him)
(Here you go)
All the young dudes
(I’ve wanted to do this for years)
Carry the news
(There you go!)
Boogaloo dudes
(How’d it feel?)
Carry the news
