#173 The First Time I Saw Your Face- Roberta Flack

The first time ever I kissed your mouth/
I felt the earth move in my hand/

“The First Time I Saw Your Face” has an amazing history. It was written in 1957 as a folk song. It sounded good, but very different from Roberta Flack’s version. It was not popular. In 1972 Flack covered the song, blew the song away and made this song a huge success. It is one of the best performances by a female vocalist of all-time.

The First Time Ever Saw Your Face Meaning
Roberta flack

The style of her vocal sounds undoubtedly hers, but she has more in common with female singers from the late 60s than with what was going on in the early 70s. Aspiring female singers study this vocal performance. Note her pace. It is slow, but due to her delivery we are awaiting to hear what she says next. She does one minor vocal run—even though we sense the power of her voice and her obvious ability to do more. And she minimizes vibrato; she uses it tastefully and sparely.

The production is interesting. The loudest instrument is the bass, but overall, most of the instruments are quiet. This puts a lot of emphasis on Flack’s voice. This is the right choice when you have that voice! The use of piano and strings are very well done.

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face Lyrics

The first time ever I saw your face,
I thought the sun rose in your eyes,
And the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the endless skies.

The first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hand.
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command my love.

And the first time ever I lay with you,
I felt your heart so close to mine.
And I knew our joy would fill the earth,
And last till the end of time my love.

The first time ever I saw your face
Your face, your face

#172 She- Elvis Costello

She maybe the reason I survive/
The why and wherefore I’m alive.

Elvis Costello’s “She” is a great song about the mysteries of women and the mysterious ways that a woman can make a man feel. The narrator is awed, grateful and feels blessed to have this woman in his life. It is truly a celebration of woman as “other”.  The narrator recognizes that this woman brings a unique set of characteristics that compliments him, which will suit him well for the rest of his life.

She Greatest Alltime Song meaning
elvis costello

Elvis Costello made his reputation as a singer/songwriter, but his best song by far is “She”, a song that you may not know is actually a cover. “She” is a song that was written for a TV show overseas. The original is underwhelming, if only because of the heavy accent of the original singer is a bit distracting. Costello delivers the song passionately, though it is slightly overproduced with the string arrangement.

She Lyrics

She may be the face I can’t forget,
The trace of pleasure or regret,
May be my treasure or the price I have to pay.
She may be the song that summer sings,
Maybe the chill that autumn brings,
Maybe a hundred different things,
Within the measure of a day.

She may be the beauty or the beast,
May be the famine or the feast,
May turn each day into a Heaven or a Hell.
She may be the mirror of my dreams,
A smile reflected in a stream,
She may not be what she may seem
Inside her shell.

She, who always seems so happy in a crowd,
Whose eyes can be so private and so proud.
No one’s allowed to see them when they cry.
She may be the love that cannot hope to last,
May come to me from shadows in the past,
That I remember ’till the day I die.

She maybe the reason I survive,
The why and wherefore I’m alive,
The one I’ll care for through the rough in many years.

Me, I’ll take her laughter her tears,
And make them all my souvenirs.
And where she goes I’ve got to be,
The meaning of my life is
She.
She!
Oh, she.

#171 Breathe (2am)- Anna Nalick

‘Cause you can’t jump the track, we’re like cars on a cable/
And life’s like an hourglass, glued to the table…

One-hit wonders get a bad name but think of all the bands that never even have one hit. We haven’t heard much from Anna Nalick since “Breathe (2am)”, but what a breath-taking release this first single of hers was. The song sounds like it could belong in both the rock world or the country world. That is extremely rare.

Breathe 2am Meaning
Ann Nalick

Nalick tells the story of a woman who is struggling to cope with the alcoholism of her man. She feels embarrassment as she has to help him home, stumbling out of the bar late at night, but she rejects the pious pity from the onlookers who are simply in a lesser state of drunkenness.

The best part of “Breathe” is her comments about fatalism. She knows that her and her man are on a path that does not lead to anything good; rarely to people turn around once they fall into the pit of alcoholism. They simply fall deeper and deeper; like an hourglass glued to a table.

Her only respite is to tell herself (and her man) to just breathe and try to get through today. This is of a bleak existence, but one that many that struggle with substance can relate to. And she can’t give up. Because her lover IS so beautiful when he smiles. And he is hers.

Breath 2am Lyrics

Two AM and she calls me ’cause I’m still awake,
Can you help me unravel my latest mistake?
I don’t love him, winter just wasn’t my season.
Yeah we walk through the doors, so accusing their eyes.
Like they have any right at all to criticize, hypocrites;
You’re all here for the very same reason.

‘Cause you can’t jump the track, we’re like cars on a cable,
And life’s like an hourglass, glued to the table.
No one can find the rewind button girl,
So cradle your head in you hands.
And breathe, just breathe,
Whoa breathe, just breathe.

May he turn twenty one on the base at Fort Bliss,
Just today he sat down to the flask in his fist.
Ain’t been sober, since maybe October of last year.
Here in town you can tell he’s been down for a while,
But my God it’s so beautiful when the boy smiles.
Wanna hold him, maybe I’ll just sing about it.

‘Cause you can’t jump the track, we’re like cars on a cable,
And life’s like an hourglass, glued to the table.
No one can find the rewind button boys,
So cradle your head in your hands.
And breathe, just breathe,
Whoa breathe, just breathe.

“There’s a light at each end of this tunnel”, you shout.
But you’re just as far in as you’ll ever be out.
These mistakes you’ve made, you’ll just make them again,
If you only try turning around.

Two AM and I’m still awake, writing a song,
If I get it all down on paper, its no longer
Inside of me, threatening the life it belongs to.
And I feel like I’m naked in front of the crowd.
‘Cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud.
And I know that you’ll use them, however you want to.

‘Cause you can’t jump the track, we’re like cars on a cable,
And life’s like an hourglass, glued to the table.
No one can find the rewind button now,
Sing it if you understand.
And breathe, just breathe,
Whoa breathe, just breathe.
