#185 Don’t Speak- No Doubt

Don’t speak, I know just what you’re sayin’/
So please stop explainin’/
Don’t tell me ’cause it hurts.

Gwen Stephani has had several hits both as a solo artist and in No Doubt, but “Don’t Speak” was her masterpiece. It’s about two lovers and best friends who are breaking up, and the emotional turmoil that follows.

Don't Speak Meaning
No Doubt

She doesn’t want to hear the reasons why he doesn’t want to be with her anymore. Anything he says will only hurt her more. She understands already, so hush. Her typical wailing vocals go good with this song, because it is about a woman who is becoming undone by hearing horrible news. It matches her personal vocal style perfectly.

The instrumentation is great, as is the melody. The melody in the verse, chorus and bridge are very different, but add up to make a coherent package. A good choice is made for the solo. Rather than a wailing electric guitar solo, they go for a nylon string acoustic guitar with muted trumpets in the background. It sounds sad and solemn, which is exactly what this song is going for.

Don't Speak Meaning
Gwen

Gwen’s contribution to 1990s fashion was incredible. She was the trend setter in fashion, but “Don’t Speak” shows she could also rock. Interestingly, this song started off very differently. For the first few years of its existence, it was a love song and had different lyrics. When she broke up with her boyfriend, bassist Tony Kanal, the song became the classic, seething breakup song it is now. Compare the lyrics with the original lyrics below:

Don’t Speak Lyrics

You and me, we used to be together
Every day together, always
I really feel that I’m losin’ my best friend
I can’t believe this could be the end
It looks as though you’re lettin’ go
And if it’s real, well, I don’t want to know

Don’t speak, I know just what you’re sayin’
So please stop explainin’
Don’t tell me ’cause it hurts
Don’t speak, I know what you’re thinkin’
I don’t need your reasons
Don’t tell me ’cause it hurts

Our memories, well, they can be inviting
But some are altogether mighty frightening
As we die, both you and I
With my head in my hands, I sit and cry

Don’t speak, I know just what you’re sayin’
So please stop explainin’
Don’t tell me ’cause it hurts, no, no, no
Don’t speak, I know what you’re thinkin’
And I don’t need your reasons
Don’t tell me ’cause it hurts

It’s all ending
We gotta stop pretending
Who we are

You and me
I can see us dyin’
Aren’t we?

Don’t speak, I know just what you’re sayin’
So please stop explainin’
Don’t tell me ’cause it hurts
No, no, don’t speak, I know what you’re thinkin’
And I don’t need your reasons
Don’t tell me ’cause it hurts

Don’t tell me ’cause it hurts
I know what you’re sayin’
So please stop explainin’
Don’t speak, don’t speak
Don’t speak, no
I know what you’re thinkin’
And I don’t need your reasons
I know you’re good, I know you’re good
I know you’re real good, oh
La, la, la, la
La, la, la, la
Don’t, don’t, ooh, ooh
Hush, hush, darling
Hush, hush, darling
Hush, hush
Don’t tell me ’cause it hurts
Hush, hush, darling
Hush, hush, darling
Hush, hush
Don’t tell me ’cause it hurts

Don’t Speak (Original Lyrics)
I can see it all in an eye blink.
I know everything about how you are.
I understand exactly how you think.
Between you and me it’s not very far.
Side by side, you and I,
With many, many years behind us,
You let words pass us by.

Because we, we’re always together.
And we, we will be forever.
Such a special treasure,
You and I.

Don’t speak, I know just what you’re saying.
So please stop explaining,
It’s nothing new that I’ve heard.

No need to tell me you’re my best friend,
It doesn’t take wits to know who you are,
The message is so clear that you said-
Written in the stars.

Bye, bye. All days can fly.
And like the birds sing something older.
So do you and I.
Because we, we’re always together and we
Will be forever, such a special treasure,
You and I.

Don’t speak, I know just what you’re saying.
So please stop explaining,
It’s nothing new that I’ve heard.

I mean it sounds so familiar, to fools in the sky.
And are there words so deep between the lies?
It’s just that they were so amazing,
So let us stop pretending who we are.

#184 Long Long Time- Linda Ronstadt

time washes clean love’s wounds unseen/
That’s what someone told me but I don’t know what it means.

“Long Long Time” by Linda Rondstadt and the Stone Poneys is a fantastic song, and it is well deserving to be on this list. It would be more interesting if Linda Rondstadt wrote her songs, because the message of this song is so different from her other hit “Different Drum” some five years or so before. With Different Drum she wasn’t in the market for a boy who wanted to love only her.  In Long Long Time she is doing everything she can to try and make him love her…but she is failing.

Long Long Time Meaning
Linda Ronstadt & the Stone Poneys

“Long Long Time” follows the Different Drum script of backing her with an orchestra. That sounds much better than she did with just the Stone Poneys. Her voice is powerful, and it needs the full wall of orchestra sound behind her to compliment her. At this point in her career she was gigging with an interesting session band. On the drums were Don Henley and on guitar was Glen Frey. Two nobodies, at the time.

Long Long Time Lyrics

Love will abide, take things in stride,
Sounds like good advice, but there’s no one at my side.
And time washes clean, love’s wounds unseen.
That’s what someone told me, but I don’t know what it means.

‘Cause I’ve done everything I know,
to try and make you mine.
And I think I’m gonna love you,
For a long long time.

Caught in my fears.
Blinking back the tears.
I can’t say you hurt me, when you never let me near.
And I never drew, one response from you.
All the while you fell, all over girls you never knew.
‘Cause I’ve done everything I know, to try and make you mine.
And I think it’s gonna hurt me, for a long long time.

Wait for the day,
You’ll go away.
Knowing that you warned me of the price I’d have to pay.
And life’s full of flaws,
Who knows the cause?
Living in the memory, of a love that never was.

‘Cause I’ve done everything I know, to try and change your mind.
And I think I’m gonna miss you, for a long long time.
‘Cause I’ve done everything I know, to try and make you mine.
And I think I’m gonna love you, for a long long time.

#183 Shots (acoustic)- Imagine Dragons

From the second that I was born it seems I had a loaded gun/
And then I shot, shot, shot a hole through everything I loved.

The narrator of Imagine Dragons’ “Shots” feels he is constantly hurting the people he loves. He always seems to be saying the wrong thing or making the wrong choices and causing pain. In his mind, he feels he’s letting his loved ones down or at the very least he is being reckless.

Who would want to be around a person who carries a loaded gun and randomly shoots wildly in the air? Who would want to stand near that person? A person who is so careless cannot be considered a good person, right?

Imagine Dragons

Is the narrator an overly reckless person or is there another explanation?  Is he overly hard on himself?  We can’t know. Perhaps it is impossible to escape the fact that we will hurt the ones we love unintentionally–at times. I suppose it is the real question is “how often is this happening”?  And how severe is the pain that we are causing?

He doesn’t believe it is purposeful, but why does it seem to always happen? Should we be judged by our actions or our intentions? Good intentions are great, but if everyone around you is constantly getting hurt by the things you do, perhaps something is wrong with you.

Shots (acoustic) Meaning
Imagine Dragons

The acoustic, piano version of “Shots” provides everything I want in a song. The pacing is a little better than the electric version. The piano allows the lyrics to truly be highlighted—and they are good lyrics that deserve attention.

The piano introduction sounds memorable and is the perfect length. The piano arrangement is quite good. Note all the different patterns–the intro, verse, chorus and solo all sound different yet perfectly coherent.

The vocals are delivered with the proper amount of intensity. We can hear the feelings of confusion, disappointment and resignation in his voice. “Shots” is an underrated classic.

Shots Lyrics

Am I out of touch?
Am I out of my place?
When I keep saying that I’m looking for an empty space
Oh, I’m wishing you’re here
But I’m wishing you’re gone
I can’t have you and I’m only gonna do you wrong

Oh, I’m going to mess this up
Oh, this is just my luck
Over and over and over again

In the meantime we let it go
At the roadside we used to know
We can let this drift away
Oh, we let this drift away

And there’s always time to change your mind
Oh, there’s always time to change your mind
Oh, there’s always time to change your mind
Oh, love, can you hear me?

I’m sorry for everything
Oh, everything I’ve done
From the second that I was born it seems I had a loaded gun
And then I shot, shot, shot a hole through everything I loved
Oh, I shot, shot, shot a hole through every single thing that I loved

Am I out of luck?
Am I waiting to break?
When I keep saying that I’m looking for a way to escape
Oh, I’m wishing I had what I’d taken for granted
I can’t help you when I’m only gonna do you wrong

Oh, I’m going to mess this up
Oh, this is just my luck
Over and over and over again

In the meantime we let it go
At the roadside we used to know
We can let this drift away
Oh, we let this drift away

And there’s always time to change your mind
Oh, there’s always time to change your mind
Oh, there’s always time to change your mind
Oh, love, can you hear me?

I’m sorry for everything
Oh, everything I’ve done
From the second that I was born it seems I had a loaded gun
And then I shot, shot, shot a hole through everything I loved
Oh, I shot, shot, shot a hole through every single thing that I loved
