#213 That’ll Be The Day- Buddy Holly & The Crickets

You say you’re gonna leave, you know it’s a lie/
‘Cause that’ll be the day when I die.

Buddy Holly recorded “That’ll Be The Day” solo and with The Crickets. His version with The Crickets is the superior version by far, but we don’t talk about The Crickets enough as a Great Band; we single out Holly.

Lead singers tend to get all the attention. However, listen to the difference between the two versions and you can see the difference that The Crickets made. Specifically, they added the backup vocals—which are such an important part of this song. Also, the intro guitar part sounds better, as does the solo: we can hear the two guitar parts.

I like the tongue-in-cheek message to his girl. He says he knows she’s lying about leaving him because it would practically be an act of murder because he would literally die that day. A lessor lyricist might have said “If you leave me I know I would cry, cause that would be the day that I died”, or similar. This was ground-breaking stuff in 1957, and it still sounds good today.

That’ll Be The Day Lyrics

Well, that’ll be the day, when you say goodbye
Yes, that’ll be the day, when you make me cry
You say you’re gonna leave, you know it’s a lie
‘Cause that’ll be the day when I die

Well, you give me all your loving and your turtle doving
All your hugs and kisses and your money too
Well, you know you love me baby, until you tell me, maybe
That some day, well I’ll be through

Well, that’ll be the day, when you say goodbye
Yes, that’ll be the day, when you make me cry
You say you’re gonna leave, you know it’s a lie
‘Cause that’ll be the day when I die

Well, that’ll be the day, when you say goodbye
Yes, that’ll be the day, when you make me cry
You say you’re gonna leave, you know it’s a lie
‘Cause that’ll be the day when I die

Well, when Cupid shot his dart he shot it at your heart
So if we ever part and I leave you
You sit and hold me and you tell me boldly
That some day, well I’ll be blue

Well, that’ll be the day, when you say goodbye
Yes, that’ll be the day, when you make me cry
You say you’re gonna leave, you know it’s a lie
‘Cause that’ll be the day when I die

Well, that’ll be the day, woo ho
That’ll be the day, woo ho
That’ll be the day, woo ho
That’ll be the day

#212 Daniel- Elton John

God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes.

Elton John’s “Daniel” is a story about a young boy whose older brother, Daniel tells him he is going away on a vacation to Spain. In truth, Daniel is going off to the Vietnam War, but he doesn’t want to frighten his younger brother.

Daniel tells his younger brother some things that seem inconsistent with a great vacation in Spain. He says it’s the best place he’s ever seen, however, Daniel comes home with scars that won’t heal: physically and emotionally. I like the line about the clouds in his eyes. When Daniel is gone, he sees him everywhere; perhaps it is the clouds in his eyes. As he watches Daniel leave again, he begins to tear up; perhaps it is those clouds in his eyes.

Daniel

While the story is great, the song would not be great without the incredible melody and performance by Elton John. As I have argued before, I think John is one of the most consistently great performers in rock history. The choice of a keyboard over a piano is one of the defining characteristics of the song. It adds to that dreamy characteristic to the song’s lyric. The synthetic flute solo is a distinctive sound as well. Overall a great song that is underrated due to it being overplayed on soft rock radio.

Daniel Lyrics

Daniel is traveling tonight on a plane.
I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain.
And I can see Daniel waving goodbye.
Oh it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes.

They say Spain is pretty though I’ve never been.
And Daniel says it’s the best place that he’s ever seen.
He should know, he’s been there enough.
Oh I miss Daniel, oh I miss him so much, oh.

Daniel my brother you are older than me,
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won’t heal?
Your eyes have died but you see more than I.
Daniel you’re a star in the face of the sky.

Oh Daniel my brother you are older than me,
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won’t heal?
Your eyes have died but you see more than I.
Daniel you’re a star in the face of the sky.

Daniel is traveling tonight on a plane.
And I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain.
And I can see Daniel waving goodbye.
Oh it looks like Daniel, it must be the clouds in my eyes.
Oh God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes.

#211 I Will Always Love You- Whitney Houston/ Dolly Parton

So, goodbye. Please, don’t cry/
We both know I’m not what you, you need.

Whitney Houston’s version of “I Will Always Love You” was one of the biggest music sensations in the past 40 years. This song was everywhere for several months, and so was Whitney, and she was the country’s darling. People who otherwise would never listen to or respect black people still loved Whitney.

I Will Always Love You Meaning
Whitney

She had the model-looks, the smile, and the beautiful voice that she knew how to use. Where others like Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera went overboard with fake emotion, Whitney pushed the boundaries with her vocals, but the emotion was always there. This is Whitney at the top of her game.

Dolly

Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” is equally fantastic.  It sounds more personal than Whitney’s version. It sounds as if she is certain the love is over, whereas Whitney sings in a tone as if to reassure her man. That is a big difference in interpretation.  Together, they achieve a higher standing on this list than either version of this list would alone.

Whitney Houston has a couple songs on this list. I think she was one of the biggest slights from Rolling Stones Top 500 list. Their list is great, but often women and soft rockers got the short end of the stick on their list, and Whitney is in both of those lanes.

Lyrics I Will Always Love You

If I should stay, I would only be in your way
So I’ll go, but I know
I’ll think of you every step of the way

And I will always love you
I will always love you
You, my darling you, hm

Bittersweet memories
That is all I’m taking with me
So, goodbye
Please, don’t cry
We both know I’m not what you, you need

And I will always love you
I will always love you, you

I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you’ve dreamed of
And I wish to you joy and happiness
But above all this, I wish you love

And I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I, I will always love you

You, darling, I love you
Ooh, I’ll always, I’ll always love you
