#403 I Only Wanna Be With You- Dusty Springfield

‘Cause you started something, can’t you see/
That ever since we met you’ve had a hold on me.

In “I Only Want to be With You” we see Dusty Springfield’s range. Not only can she do sultry songs like “The Look of Love”, she can also do typical, upbeat pop fair. This song has a theme similar to many pop songs of the 60s: “I am really into you”, “I want to spend more time with you”, “I’m falling in love with you”, etc. Springfield delivers it in an optimistic way that is reminiscent of the hope of young or burgeoning love. She has a very versatile voice.

I only Wanna Be With You Meaning
Dusty

Springfield’s “I Only Want to be With You” is really upbeat and fast-paced. The arrangement contains a bit of an eclectic selection of instruments. Along with the usual strings and drums that you find in a lot of songs from the pop songs from this era, you also have a small sax intro and featured trumpets. The brass section seems to drive a lot of the rhythm of the song, which contributes to that unique “old-school” sound.

I Only Wanna Be With You Lyrics

I don’t know what it is that makes me love you so
I only know I never want to let you go
‘Cause you started something, can’t you see
That ever since we met you’ve had a hold on me
I happens to be true, I only want to be with you

It doesn’t matter where you go or what you do
I want to spend each moment of the day with you
Look what has happened with just one kiss
I never knew that I could be in love like this
It’s crazy but it’s true, I only want to be with you

You stopped and smiled at me
Asked me if I’d care to dance
I fell into your open arms
I didn’t stand a chance

Now, listen, honey, I just want to be beside you everywhere
As long as we’re together, honey, I don’t care
‘Cause you started something, can’t you see
That ever since we met you’ve had a hold on me
No matter what you do, I only want to be with you

You stopped and smiled at me
Asked me if I’d care to dance
I fell into your open arms
I didn’t stand a chance

Now hear me darling, I just want to be beside you everywhere
As long as we’re together, honey, I don’t care
‘Cause you started something, can’t you see
That ever since we met you’ve had a hold on me
No matter what you do, I only want to be with you
I said, no matter, no matter what you do, I only want to be with you

#357 Suzanne- Leonard Cohen

And you know that she will trust you/
For you’ve touched her perfect body with your mind.

In “Suzanne”, Leonard Cohen tells of about a woman he is very attracted to that he meets up with sometimes. There seems to be a physical and emotional connection—at least on his end. He mentions several times she is beautiful, but that is not what makes her intriguing.

She has a special place down by the river that she takes him to, and she includes him in this little piece of her world, and he is charmed by that. It is not clear that anything really happens between them other than he fancies her.

Suzanne Greatest alltime song Meaning
cohen

Like many of Cohen’s works, “Suzanne” is not overproduced. It is basically his voice and a guitar. There are nice touches of instrumentation that are subtle that make the recording work. The background accompanying singers in the background sound fantastic. They sound like an angelic choir—which is fitting with the religious symbolism in the song. The light strings also do a great deal to break up the monotony of a song without a bridge.

“Suzanne” is great because we hear Cohen’s affection for Suzanne in his voice and his poetry. Only a few singer-songwriters ever achieve that “poet” level lyrics writer. The melody is good, it is a bit more subtle than the usual rock or folk songs. Combined with Cohen’s penchant for singing subtly, this great song could be missed.

Suzanne Lyrics

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river,
You can hear the boats go by, you can spend the night beside her.
And you know that she’s half-crazy, but that’s why you want to be there,
And she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China,
And just when you mean to tell her that you have no love to give her,
Then he gets you on her wavelength,
And she lets the river answer that you’ve always been her lover.

And you want to travel with her, and you want to travel blind.
And you know that she will trust you,
For you’ve touched her perfect body with your mind.

And Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water.
And he spent a long time watching from his lonely wooden tower.
And when he knew for certain only drowning men could see him,
He said all men will be sailors then until the sea shall free them
But he himself was broken, long before the sky would open,
Forsaken, almost human, he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone.

And you want to travel with him, and you want to travel blind,
And you think you maybe you’ll trust him,
For he’s touched your perfect body with her mind.

Now, Suzanne takes your hand and she leads you to the river,
She’s wearing rags and feathers from Salvation Army counters.
And the sun pours down like honey on our lady of the harbor.
And she shows you where to look among the garbage and the flowers,
There are heroes in the seaweed, there are children in the morning,
They are leaning out for love and they will lean that way forever,
While Suzanne holds her mirror.

And you want to travel with her, and you want to travel blind,
And you know that you can trust her
For she’s touched your perfect body with her mind.

#291 Crash Into Me- Dave Mathews

Hike up your skirt a little more/
And show the world to me.

“Crash Into Me” tells how the narrator is at the mercy of a girl due to his lust for her. Dave Mathews dispenses with coy language and innuendo and just flat out tells us what effect this girl is having on him and what he wants from her.

He wants her to crash into him. I suppose that is a euphemism for sex, but it sounds so much more interesting if we believe the term to mean “I want your world to collide with mine”, or something to that effect. Perhaps there is not that much difference. The song is about a young man’s desires.

Crash Into Me Meaning
Dave Mathews

The song has a unique structure: we only hear the chorus once towards the end of the song. One of the most interesting aspects of this song is the outro. It is the “melody” from ring-around-the-rosy. I am not sure why I always found that so intriguing. It don’t think I have ever heard something like that before or since. And it fits well into the song. Note how important the bass is to this song. Most of the time it mirrors the melody, which is good in an otherwise free flowing song.

Crash Into Me Lyrics

You’ve got your ball,
You’ve got your chain
Tied to me tight tie me up again.
Who’s got their claws
In you my friend?
Into your heart I’ll beat again.
Sweet like candy to my soul,
Sweet you rock,
And sweet you roll.
Lost for you I’m so lost for you.
You come crash into me,
And i come into you,
I come into you.
In a boys dream,
In a boys dream.

Touch your lips just so i know,
In your eyes, love, it glows so.
I’m bare-boned and crazy for you,
When you come crash
Into me, baby
And I come into you.
In a boys dream.
In a boys dream.

If I’ve gone overboard,
Then I’m begging you
To forgive me
In my haste.
When I’m holding you so girl,
Close to me.

Oh and you come crash
Into me, baby.
And I come into you.

Hack up your skirt a little more,
And show the world to me.
Hike up your skirt a little more,
And show your world to me.
In a boys dream… In a boys dream.

Oh i watch you there
Through the window
And i stare at you.
You wear nothing but you
Wear it so well.
Tied up and twisted,
The way I’d like to be.
For you, for me, come crash
Into me.
Crash into me,
Crash into me.
Crash into me,
Crash into me.

I’m the king of the castle,
You’re the dirty rascal.
Crash into me.
Oh see you crash into me baby.
‘Cause I am swimming in your seas,
And in your ocean.
And I feel your waves come and crash into me.
Oh yes I see the waves come and crash into me.
Oh yes I feel the waves come and crash into me.

I will be your dixie chicken,
If you’ll be my Tennessee lamb,
We can walk together.
Down in Dixieland.
