#200 I’ll Stand By You- The Pretenders

Nothing you confess could make me love you less/
I’ll stand by you…

The Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You” is an emotional song. I love the thought of a bad-ass woman saying nothing you can say or do will make me love you less. What a song! When the song came out it had this weird quality: it seemed like it was a cover of a song I had heard before. It seemed like it belonged in another era- not 1994.

The Pretenders

It was instant classic. In fact, I assumed it was a cover for many years. I can’t remember having this feeling many times in my life. Perhaps you’ve felt the same before? Like, how could this not have been written before? “Timelessness”.

Ill Stand By You Meaning
Chrissie Hynde

The highlight of the song is the lyrics and Chrissie Hynde’s unique delivery of the vocal. If you can feel love in someone’s voice, this is something close to what it sounds like. She sounds so sure of herself, yet her voice wobbles a bit: perhaps at the intensity of the words she is expressing. That’s what I like to think.

This song takes quite a journey—musically—from the beginning to the end of the song. In the beginning it is a tender love song. At the end it has become a full-out rock jam (listen to the drums). The background singing and lead guitar are especially worth noting.

I’ll Stand By You Lyrics

Oh, why you look so sad, the tears are in your eyes,
Come on and come to me now, and don’t be ashamed to cry,
Let me see you through, ’cause I’ve seen the dark side too.
When the night falls on you, you don’t know what to do,
Nothing you confess could make me love you less,

I’ll stand by you,
I’ll stand by you, won’t let nobody hurt you,
I’ll stand by you

So if you’re mad, get mad, don’t hold it all inside,
Come on and talk to me now.
Hey there, what you got to hide?
I get angry too, well, I’m alive like you.
When you’re standing at the cross roads,
And don’t know which path to choose,
Let me come along, ’cause even if you’re wrong

I’ll stand by you,
I’ll stand by you, won’t let nobody hurt you,
I’ll stand by you.
Baby, even to your darkest hour, and I’ll never desert you,
I’ll stand by you.
And when, when the night falls on you baby,
You’re feeling all a lone, you’re wandering on your own,
I’ll stand by you.

I’ll stand by you, won’t let nobody hurt you,
I’ll stand by you, baby even to your darkest hour,
And I’ll never desert you,
I’ll stand by you,

I’ll stand by you.
I’ll stand by you, won’t let nobody hurt you,
I’ll stand by you, baby even to your darkest hour,
And I’ll never desert you
I’ll stand by you

#122 Drive- The Cars

Who’s gonna pay attention
To your dreams?
Who’s gonna plug their ears
When you scream?

What is love? In The Cars “Drive” Ric Ocasek says that it is easy to be in lust at the beginning of the relationship when everybody is on their best behavior. Everyone is easy to love when they are acting their best. Who will love you when you’re at your worst? That is real love.

Drive cars song meaning
The Cars

Also, the further action of going out of your way to stay sober to drive your significant other home while she is wasted seems like a loving act that you would really only do for someone you really care about. Would the other guy do this for you? Because Ric would. (He’d even listen to her dreams…that’s a bridge too far for me.)

Not many great songs made it out of the 80s, but “Drive” does because it is slick, has a unique take on love and a catchy chorus. It is slightly overproduced, but that was just the style then…and also the style of The Cars. Just remember—if you don’t have someone to drive you home at night it might not be real love.

Drive Lyrics

Who’s gonna tell you when
It’s too late?
Who’s gonna tell you things
Aren’t so great?

You can’t go on,
Thinking nothing’s wrong.
Who’s gonna drive you home
Tonight?

Who’s gonna pick you up
When you fall?
Who’s gonna hang it up
When you call?
Who’s gonna pay attention
To your dreams?
Who’s gonna plug their ears
When you scream?

You can’t go on
Thinking nothing’s wrong.
Who’s gonna drive you home
Tonight?

Who’s gonna hold you down
When you shake?
Who’s gonna come around
When you break?

You can’t go on
Thinking nothing’s wrong.
Who’s gonna drive you home
Tonight?
Oh, you know you can’t go on
Thinking nothing’s wrong.
Who’s gonna drive you home
Tonight?

#114 Unchained Melody- The Righteous Brothers

Are you still mine?
I need your love.

“Unchained Melody” was written in the 50s, but the Righteous Brothers’ version was released in 1965. It is hard to reconcile this with what was going on in rock at the time. It was two different universes. This song has to be one of the most recognizable, iconic songs of all time.

Unchained Melody Meaning
Righteous Brothers

The greatness of “Unchained Melody” comes from the vocal sung by Bobby Hatfield. Wow. The range is incredible and the subtly in his delivery is great. He emotes exactly twice in the song…right when he delivers the line: “I need your love”. And we feel it. I get goosebumps hearing it still—after hearing it 500 or so times.

The production is solid. The string arrangement has a lot going on, but it rightfully does a lot to highlight the vocal. Another thing that might be missed it the piano part at the end. It is pretty awesome. I might have been tempted to mix that slightly higher, but the producer made the right choice. It sounds better as a hidden gem.

Unchained Melody Lyrics

Oh, my love, my darling
I’ve hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time
Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me

Lonely rivers flow
To the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea
Lonely rivers sigh
“Wait for me, wait for me”
I’ll be coming home, wait for me

Oh, my love, my darling
I’ve hungered, for your touch
A long, lonely time
Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me
