At what point in a relationship do you bust out the above line? Is this just a tactic Stevie is using to avoid telling a girl that he loves her? “I’m not in love with you, but I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever.” That should get him off her back for a couple more months.
That’s kind of tongue-in-cheek, it is clear “I Believe” is meant to be a love song, but the practicality of the lyrics don’t really add up. However, the sentiment is there. Wonder states, before he met this girl he was a shell of his full self. Years of shattered dreams felt like a wasted life and he felt empty inside. Having met this new girl, he is more hopeful.
The song is produced well and Stevie’s vocals sound superb. He uses a variety of instruments to achieve this sound, but the song relies heavily on the bass and percussion for its unique sound. Of course, the background singers play such a huge part in helping to create the sound of this song.
