Great songs written about exes.  Mostly songs are about bad exes but also about exes that you still love.  Unsurprisingly, this is a huge category in music. Also check out the “breakup songs” category.

#147 Operator- Jim Croce

There’s something in my eyes, you know it happens every time/
I think about a love that I thought would save me.

Jim Croce’s “Operator” might sound dated to some. It mentions a phone operator, payphones and a matchbook, which are not things that we really use that much these days. But the sentiment is the same as today. Croce is thinking about dialing up an ex. He found out his ex is dating his ex-best-friend. His roller-coaster of emotions is similar to what any of us today would experience.

Croce

Also, didn’t his ex hate his friend? Now she’s with him?

As he talks to the operator, he begins to tear up remembering the love that they once had. Midway through the call he begins to get second thoughts. What is he going to say to her anyways that doesn’t sound desperate? In the end he decides against it. He doesn’t call her.

Croce’s voice is smooth and comforting, and he effortlessly conveys humor and pain in the same song. The song is also a lovely example of a cross between folk and soft rock. Notice the dual guitars—both of which are finger picking. That is an amazing amount of sound coming mostly from two guitars and one voice. He is another singer that we lost way too young. It is sad to imagine all the music we missed out on.

Operator Lyrics

Operator, well could you help me place this call?
See, the number on the matchbook is old and faded.
She’s living in L.A. with my best old ex-friend Ray.
A guy she said she knew well and sometimes hated.

Isn’t that the way they say it goes? Well, let’s forget all that
And give me the number if you can find it.
So I can call just to tell ’em I’m fine and to show.
I’ve overcome the blow, I’ve learned to take it well.
I only wish my words could just convince myself.
That it just wasn’t real, but that’s not the way it feels.

Operator, well could you help me place this call?
Well, I can’t read the number that you just gave me.
There’s something in my eyes, you know it happens every time.
I think about a love that I thought would save me.

Isn’t that the way they say it goes? Well, let’s forget all that.
And give me the number if you can find it.
So I can call just to tell ’em I’m fine and to show.
I’ve overcome the blow, I’ve learned to take it well.
I only wish my words could just convince myself.
That it just wasn’t real, but that’s not the way it feels.

No, no, no, no – that’s not the way it feels.
Operator, well let’s forget about this call.
There’s no one there I really wanted to talk to.
Thank you for your time, ah, you’ve been so much more than kind.
And you can keep the dime.

#106 Don’t Look Back in Anger- Oasis

My soul slides away,
but don’t look back in anger I heard you say.

The narrator in Oasis’ “Don’t Look Back in Anger” passes Sally—his ex-girlfriend—and has a quick conversation with her.  She’s unhappy. It seems she regrets breaking up with him. He tells her to truly reflect on her life and things aren’t as bad as she makes them out to be. We don’t get many details.

She says she’s not the type to reflect on the past because introspection brings her to unhappy thoughts.

Don't Look Back in Anger Meaning
Oasis

The narrator takes a brief aside to think about how much better his life is now—without Sally. Sally picks up on this, but she mistakes his emotions for anger and tells him “don’t look back in anger”. Most likely he is just looking at her with pity or sadness or ambivalence.

“Don’t Look Back in Anger” has a great melody and a great title– one that can be a lesson that we can all do to remember. Although Sally doesn’t do well to articulate why she is saying it, maybe every time you see an ex, it is a good thing to repeat as a mantra. The vocals are sharp and sound very reminiscent of the glory days of The British Invasion in Rock, though their sound is similar to their contemporaries The Verve.

Don’t Look Back in Anger Lyrics

Slip inside the eye of your mind,
Don’t you know you might find
A better place to play.
You said that you’d never been,
But all the things that you’ve seen
Slowly fade away.

So I start a revolution from my bed.
‘Cause you said the brains I had went to my head.
Step outside, summertime’s in bloom.
Stand up beside the fireplace,
Take that look from off your face,
You ain’t ever gonna burn my heart out.

And so Sally can wait,
She knows it’s too late,
As we’re walking on by.
Her soul slides away.
But “Don’t look back in anger”,
I heard you say.

Take me to the place where you go
Where nobody knows,
If it’s night or day.
But please don’t put your life in the hands
Of a rock and roll band,
Who’ll throw it all away.

I’m gonna start a revolution from my bed.
‘Cause you said the brains I had went to my head.
Step outside ’cause summertime’s in bloom.
Stand up beside the fireplace,
Take that look from off your face,
‘Cause you ain’t ever gonna burn my heart out.

And so Sally can wait,
She knows it’s too late,
As she’s walking on by.
My soul slides away.
But “Don’t look back in anger”,
I heard you say.

So Sally can wait,
She knows it’s too late,
As we’re walking on by.
Her soul slides away.
But “Don’t look back in anger”,
I heard you say.

So Sally can wait,
She knows it’s too late,
As she’s walking on by.
My soul slides away.
But “Don’t look back in anger,
Don’t look back in anger”,
I heard you say.
At least not today.

#100 Heart Of The Matter- Don Henley

But everything changes/
And my friends seem to scatter/
But I think it’s about forgiveness.

If you watch The Eagles documentary it is clear that Henley has lived a full life. Fuller than most of us. In Don Henley’s “The Heart of the Matter” he seems to be coming to terms with some of the choices he made and believes that forgiveness is a virtue onto itself.

Interestingly, in the song he is giving this advice to someone else, but it doesn’t make it any less poignant. Perhaps carrying around anger will eat you up inside.  Three years after this song was released, he got back together with The Eagles.

The Heart Of The Matter

As I was working on this project, I was surprised by how Henley’s solo work held up. This will be his third song on this list which in my book makes him HOF worthy. He had two other borderline songs as well. I think The Eagles and Henley get a bad rap—much of it rightly deserved due to their arrogance, but there is no doubting their talent.

In “Heart of the Matter” we hear Henley sound more sincere than he does in other songs. The material sounds more personal than anything he did in The Eagles or solo and it comes across in his voice.

The Heart Of The Matter Lyrics & Meaning

I got the call today, I didn’t want to hear,
But I knew that it would come.
An old, true friend of ours was talkin’ on the phone,
She said you found someone.

And I thought of all the bad luck,
And the struggles we went through.
And how I lost me, and you lost you.
What are those voices outside love’s open door?
Make us throw off our contentment,
And beg for something more?

I’m learning to live without you now.
But I miss you sometimes.
The more I know, the less I understand.
All the things I thought I knew, I’m learning again.

I’ve been tryin’ to get down
To the heart of the matter,
But my will gets weak,
And my thoughts seem to scatter
But I think it’s about forgiveness,
Forgiveness.
Even if, even if you don’t love me anymore.

These times are so uncertain,
There’s a yearning undefined,
People filled with rage.
We all need a little tenderness,
How can love survive in such a graceless age?

Ah, the trust and self-assurance that lead to happiness,
They’re the very things we kill, I guess.
Oh, pride and competition,
Cannot fill these empty arms.
And the work I put between us, you know it doesn’t keep me warm.

I’m learning to live with out you now,
But I miss you, baby.
And the more I know, the less I understand.
All the things I thought I’d figured out,
I have to learn again.

I’ve been trying to get down
To the heart of the matter,
But everything changes,
And my friends seem to scatter
But I think it’s about forgiveness,
Forgiveness.
Even if, even if you don’t love me anymore.

There are people in your life,
Who’ve come and gone.
They let you down,
You know they’ve hurt your pride.
You better put it all behind you baby,
‘Cause life goes on.
You keep carryin’ that anger,
It’ll eat you up inside baby.

I’ve been trying to get down
To the heart of the matter.
But my will gets weak,
And my thoughts seem to scatter
But I think it’s about forgiveness,
Forgiveness.
Even if, even if you don’t love me.

I’ve been tryin’ to get down
To the heart of the matter.
Because the flesh will get weak,
And the ashes will scatter
So, I’m thinkin’ about forgiveness,
Forgiveness.
Even if , even if you don’t love me.

Forgiveness, forgiveness, baby,
Forgiveness, forgiveness.
Forgiveness, forgiveness.
Even if, even if you don’t love me anymore.
