#448 Somewhere Only We Know- Keane

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I’m getting old, and I need something to rely on.

When we’re weary from our daily problems, sometimes we seek out familiar patterns and places to bring us comfort. In Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” it appears like a relationship is having difficulties and the man is asking his love to meet him at their private place that only they know about. It is special that he can just say “our place” and the two of them would both know where that is. He is reminding himself and her.

Somewhere Only We Know Meaning
Keane

Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” is driven by its strong melody. It is really catchy and powerful. The singing sounds like a man yearning for something: perhaps to be comforted by his love. The instrumentation is strong. Both piano and keyboards are used to strong effect. The drums are well done.

A strong, purposeful bridge helps bring the song home. The building of the song from piano in the beginning building towards forte at the end is the right choice. It feels like Keane starts sad and upon reflection sees a course of action to fix the relationship and needs to fix the relationship now.

Somewhere Only We Know Lyrics

I walked across an empty land,
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand.
I felt the earth beneath my feet,
Sat by the river and it made me complete.

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on.
So tell me when you’re gonna let me in.
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin.

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me.
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I’ve been dreaming of?

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on.
So tell me when you’re gonna let me in.
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin.

And if you have a minute, why don’t we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything.
So why don’t we go
Somewhere only we know?
Somewhere only we know.

So why don’t we go?
So why don’t we go?

Ahh
Ohh
This could be the end of everything.
So why don’t we go,
Somewhere only we know.
Somewhere only we know.
Somewhere only we know?

#416 Sailing- Christopher Cross

It’s not far to never-never land, no reason to pretend/
And if the wind is right you can find the joy of innocence again.

I have always enjoyed “Sailing”—the song—and I love Christopher Cross’ high voice. The song is about escape; for Cross, he finds his escape in sailing. You may find your escape in another hobby. I believe that is why this song resonates so well. Like all soft-rock tunes, I believe it is unjustly not taken seriously enough as a contribution to rock. However, there are so many aspects of the song to love.

Sailing Greatest Songs Meaning
Christopher Cross

The imagery and depiction of escape is accurate and sailing away on a boat is a wonderful way to depict it. His falsetto is great. The use of keyboards is excellent. He uses the synthesizer tone just a touch and mainly relies on the piano sound. The strings are sprinkled in nicely too. There is a nice piano solo…we don’t hear many of those. Cross is an underappreciated talent and “Sailing” is an underappreciated song.

Lyrics Sailing

Well, it’s not far down to paradise, at least it’s not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see.
Believe me.

It’s not far to never-never land, no reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy of innocence again
Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see.
Believe me.

Sailing takes me away to where I’ve always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

Fantasy, it gets the best of me
When I’m sailing
All caught up in the reverie, every word is a symphony
Won’t you believe me?

Sailing takes me away to where I’ve always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

Well it’s not far back to sanity, at least it’s not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away and find serenity
Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see.
Believe me.

Sailing takes me away to where I’ve always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

#274 Thunder Road- Bruce Springsteen

You ain’t a beauty but, hey, you’re alright/
Oh, and that’s alright with me.

“Thunder Road” tells the story of Bruce Springsteen’s first “Mary”. Mary was like Paul Simon’s “Kathy”, when he needed a woman’s name in the song to be his girlfriend that is the one he usually went with. Thunder Road’s Mary isn’t a true love. Bruce and Mary just seem bored in a boring town and his car offers some small bit of a temporary reprieve for a night. They can head out on Thunder Road and see where the night takes them. That’s all he has to offer, but hey, Mary isn’t much of a beauty, so who is she to turn him down?

Thunder Road Meaning
Bruce Springsteen

The piano and harmonic introduction sets the stage well for a small-town play. Throughout, the piano is the lead instrument and it is performed well. As the song goes on, the rest of the E-Street Band jump in.

“Thunder Road” works because it tells a fun story using a great melody. It also helps establish Springsteen’s ethos. He is a badass from a small town. He wears leather, he loves women, motorcycles and cars. His sound was different from a lot of the other stuff that was being released in the seventies. He brought some of the great storytelling from folk music and combined it with rock to carve a unique niche in rock n roll.

Springsteen’s phrasing is unique. At times he sounds as if he has hundreds of thoughts he has to fit into a single meter. His description of the town and Mary are especially good. We can almost see the picture in our mind as Mary’s dress waves as she dances across the porch. The song is surprisingly overtly sexual. As Bruce says, “this ride ain’t free”.

Thunder Road Lyrics

The screen door slams, Mary’s dress sways.
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays.
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that’s me, and I want you only
Don’t turn me home again.
I just can’t face myself alone again.
Don’t run back inside,
Darling, you know just what I’m here for.
So you’re scared and you’re thinking
That maybe we ain’t that young anymore.
Show a little faith, there’s magic in the night,
You ain’t a beauty, but, hey, you’re alright.
Oh, and that’s alright with me.

You can hide ‘neath your covers and study your pain.
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain.
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets.
Well now I’m no hero that’s understood.
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood.
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair.
Well the night’s busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere.
We got one last chance to make it real.
To trade in these wings on some wheels.
Climb in back, heaven’s waiting down on the tracks
Oh-oh come take my hand,
We’re riding out tonight to case the promised land.
Oh-oh Thunder Road oh Thunder Road oh Thunder Road.
Lying out there like a killer in the sun.
Hey, I know it’s late, we can make it if we run
Oh, Thunder Road, sit tight, take hold
Thunder Road.

Well I got this guitar, and I learned how to make it talk.
And my car’s out back if you’re ready to take that long walk.
From your front porch to my front seat
The door’s open but the ride it ain’t free.
And I know you’re lonely for words that I ain’t spoken
But tonight we’ll be free, all the promises’ll be broken.
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets.

They scream your name at night in the street.
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet.
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they’re gone.
On the wind, so Mary, climb in
It’s a town full of losers
And I’m pulling out of here to win.
