#456 The A-Team- Birdy/ Ed Sheeran

‘Cause in the pipe, she’ll fly to the motherland
And sell love to another man

“The A Team” is a tragic song about the life of a prostitute who is addicted to meth, and who sells her body to barely afford rent. This has been her way of life since she was young. She isn’t young anymore.

The A-team Meaning
Birdy

The description of the woman’s addiction is pretty detailed. Not in the mechanics—but the song describes the behaviors of the woman well: she “sells love to another man”. The woman wants to feel love and to have good experiences, but it is so much easier to get the feeling of happiness from her pipe than it is from real life.

“The A Team” was written by Ed Sheeran. His version was well received but Birdy’s version of “The A-Team” transforms the song into an all-time great.  Perhaps the biggest peculiarity about this song is that they were both so young when they performed this song. Sheeran was eighteen when he wrote it; Birdy was fourteen when she recorded! This is one of the more intense subject matters.

Must a person experience an emotion to properly convey the feelings behind it? Usually I’d answer ‘absolutely yes’. However, I don’t think Birdy was hanging out with many drug addicts at 14. Maybe faking the emotion and understand is sufficient to make great music (like a good actor might.) Or, perhaps one can understand the tragedy of another person’s story without experiencing it directly.

Birdy’s vocal performance and instrumental is delicate and compassionate.  She handles the lower register especially well. This usually separates the average female singers from the great ones. Her voice and the nuance with which she sings makes her sound 10 years older.

It fits the story of a tragic prostitute perfectly. Birdy is especially adept at covering songs from male singer-songwriters and turning them into classics. The piano on “A-team” is understated but especially good. Some of the patterns are somewhat novel.

The A-team Lyrics

White lips, pale face
Breathing in snowflakes
Burnt lungs, sour taste
Light’s gone, day’s end
Struggling to pay rent
Long nights, strange men

And they say
She’s in the class A Team
She’s stuck in her daydream
Been this way since eighteen
But lately her face seems
Slowly sinking, wasting
Crumbling like pastries
And they scream
The worst things in life come free to her

‘Cause she’s just under the upper-hand
And goes mad for a couple grams
And she don’t want to go outside tonight
‘Cause in a pipe, she’ll fly to the motherland
And sell love to another man
It’s too cold outside
Angels to fly
Angels to fly, mm

Ripped gloves, raincoat
Tried to swim and stay afloat
Dry house, wet clothes
Loose change, bank notes
Weary-eyed and dry throat
Call girl, no phone

They say
She’s in the class A Team
She’s stuck in her daydream
Been this way since eighteen
But lately her face seems
Slowly sinking, wasting
Crumbling like pastries
And they scream
The worst things in life come free to us

‘Cause she’s just under the upper-hand
And goes mad for a couple grams
And she don’t want to go outside tonight
‘Cause in the pipe, she’ll fly to the motherland
And sell love to another man
It’s too cold outside
Angels to fly

Now an angel will die
Covered in white
Closed eyes and hoping for a better life
This time, now we’ll fade out tonight
Straight down the line
Just straight down the line, oh, mm

Now they say
She’s in the class A Team
She’s stuck in her daydream
Been this way since eighteen
But lately her face seems
Slowly sinking, wasting
Crumbling like pastries
And they scream
The worst things in life come free to us

When we’re all under the upper-hand
And go mad for a couple grams
And we don’t want to go outside tonight
‘Cause in the pipe we’ll fly to the motherland
And sell love to another man
It’s too cold outside
Angels to fly
Angels to fly
Fly, fly
Angels to fly, to fly, to fly
Angels to die

#451 Purple Haze- Jimi Hendrix

Am I happy or in misery?
Whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me

At first Jimi’s “Purple Haze” appears to be about a guy who becomes infatuated with a girl. His brain gets a bit foggy because she is all he can think about. Infatuation can be a powerful drug. She has put a spell on him. But then the song takes a darker turn. He says: “I’m talkin’ about the hard stuff…so far out of my mind/ Something’s happening” This is clearly a drug reference.

Purple Haze Meaning
Jimi

The sound is very psychedelic and trippy. Is it the most famous psychedelic rock song? Perhaps. Listen to the guitar work—it is iconic. It establishes the mood. It sounds like our reality is being distorted by Jimi’s guitar.

A lot is made of Jimi’s guitar work. Rightfully so. His voice is equally powerful, but it is underrated. It is smooth and masculine. He never over-emotes. We never feel like Jimi is delivering a performance; we feel like the emotion and music is spontaneously emitting from him. It feels genuine.

Purple Haze Lyrics

Purple haze all in my brain
Lately things don’t seem the same
Actin’ funny, but I don’t know why
‘Scuse me while I kiss the sky

Purple haze all around
Don’t know if I’m comin’ up or down
Am I happy or in misery?
Whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me

Help me
Help me
Oh, no, no

Hammerin’
Talkin’ ’bout heart ‘n’ s-soul
I’m talkin’ about hard stuff
If everybody’s still around, fluff and ease, if
So far out my mind
Something’s happening, something’s happening

Ooo, ahhh
Ooo, ahhh
Ooo, ahhh
Ooo, ahhh, yeah!

Purple haze all in my eyes, uhh
Don’t know if it’s day or night
You got me blowin’, blowin’ my mind
Is it tomorrow or just the end of time?

Ooh
Help me
Ahh, yea-yeah, purple haze, yeah
Oh, no, oh
Oh, help me
Tell me, baby, tell me
I can’t go on like this
You’re makin’ me blow my mind, mama
N-no, nooo
No, it’s painful, baby

#399 Same Girl- Randy Newman

You’re still the same girl you always were.

For younger readers or readers who are parents, Randy Newman might be the songwriter you’ve heard most often on this list. He writes a lot of the soundtracks for the Disney & Pixar Movies. Of course, you don’t realize it is him writing them.

Before he did that, he wrote this beautiful song about two drug addicts who are in love with each other. A bit of a contrast. The narrator is a man who looks past the years of experience his lover has accrued and says that he still sees the same girl he first met. So, she has a few more holes from needles and years on the street: her eyes are still as blue as the day he met her. The lyric is lacking great detail, but it is supposed to be words spoken from one junkie to another. Perhaps the couple aren’t the verbal type.

Same Girl Meaning
Randy Newman

What I really like about this song is how the minimalist recording shows off how great of a melody this is. Also, the piano notes played are about as minimalist as you can go. It is just such an interesting decision that makes this sound like a tender song.  I wonder if this is the definitive version of the song. I think this is a great candidate for an updated cover with a singer who is more capable. Glen Frey tried. Frey’s voice is preferable to Newman’s, but his version is not as good. This is a sad song. Frey’s version attempts to make it into more of a straight sentimental love song.

Same Girl Lyrics

You’re still the same girl you always were
You’re still the same girl you always were

A few more nights on the street that’s all
A few more holes in your arm
A few more years with me, that’s all

You’re still the same girl
With the same sweet smile that you always had
And the same blue eyes like the sun
And the same clear voice that I always

You’re still the same girl
That I love
