#377 Wonderful (The Way I Feel)- My Morning Jacket

Took a long time to get here/
But if it would have been easy, I would not have cared.

My Morning Jacket’s “Wonderful (The Way I Feel) is about a change of mindset that leads to an improvement of feeling.  While most songs emphasize an external event that accompanies new happy feelings, this song focuses on the internal changes of the narrator. Kind of like an agnostic’s version of being born-again. There are not necessarily any new external events, though he notes it “took a long time to get here” and it wasn’t easy.

Wonderful (The Way I Feel) Meaning
My Morning Jacket

The song matches his new mood. The rhythm of the song sways casually. The song is not overly produced: in the beginning there is a simple acoustic guitar part that is lightly finger-picked, and strings are added halfway through.

The song also seems to indicate a change of lifestyle that has come with this new revelation. He seems to want to travel to a simpler place where there is no disease and lawlessness. A place that would help support his new-found peace of mind.

Wonderful (The Way I Feel) Lyrics

It matters to me.
Took a long time to get here.
But if it would have been easy,
I would not have cared.

Like a tropical forest;
Like a cop on the beat,
When all is in order,
You get lost in the heat.

I feel so wonderful
Wonderful, wonderful the way I feel.
I feel so wonderful
Wonderful, wonderful the way I feel.

Doesn’t matter to me,
I can take it or leave it.
I can learn from way back when
And still live right now.

With the sun on my shoulders
And the wind at my back.
I will never grow older,
At least not in my mind.

I feel so wonderful
Wonderful, wonderful the way I feel.
I feel so wonderful
Wonderful, wonderful the way I feel.

I’m going where there ain’t no fear.
I’m going where the spirit is near.
I’m going where the livin’ is easy
And the people are kind- a new state of mind.

I’m going where there ain’t no police,
I’m going where there ain’t no disease.
I’m going where there ain’t no need
To escape from what is-Only spirits at ease.

#336 Sunshine on My Shoulders- John Denver

If I had a day that I could give you/
I’d give to you the day just like today.

John Denver is a great singer-songwriter that crossed genres. His sound is a mixture between folk, country and soft-rock. One of his favorite themes is the outdoors: he was an environmentalist before it was a thing. “Sunshine on my Shoulders” is a song about his love of the outdoors, but also his enjoyment of sharing special days with the ones he loves. This song celebrates the simple life and the joys of love and the environment.

Sunshine on my Shoulders Meaning
John Denver

The melody of “Sunshine on My Shoulders” is endearing, and Denver’s voice is smooth, happy and hopeful. Like most of his songs, it features him on the acoustic guitar, but “Sunshine” also has a nice bass accompanying it that plays a key part. I feel that this song lets us know a lot about Denver as a person. That is, the song seems personal to him and he is okay with telling us he is an emotional and sensitive person.

Sunshine on my Shoulders Lyrics

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy,
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry.
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely,
Sunshine almost always makes me high.

If I had a day that I could give you,
I’d give to you the day just like today.
If I had a song that I could sing for you,
I’d sing a song to make you feel this way.

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy,
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry.
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely,
Sunshine almost always makes me high.

If I had a tale that I could tell you,
I’d tell a tale sure to make you smile.
If I had a wish that I could wish for you,
I’d make a wish for sunshine for all the while.

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy,
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry.
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely,
Sunshine almost all the time makes me high.
Sunshine almost always…

#301 The Air That I Breathe- The Hollies

Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak
So sleep, silent angel go to sleep

Sometimes the love you share with another person is enough to make you content. That is all you really need…of course, that and the air that you breathe. The narrator is singing that he is so sated that he has need of nothing else but air and his lover. He doesn’t need cigarettes, books, light, just her.  In fact, if her were to offer him a wish, he wouldn’t take it because he has everything he needs right now.

The Air That I Breathe Meaning
The Hollies

The Holies’ “The Air That I Breathe” blends many influences…or at least hints at them. It sounds close to the disco era of ABBA with its chorus but its versus sound straight out of the rock of the 60s. It also has some heavy orchestration as was popular in 60s pop. There is a little bit of everything in “The Air That I Breathe”. It is an interesting blend.

The Air That I Breathe Lyrics

If I could make a wish
I think I’d pass
Can’t think of anything I need
No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound
Nothing to eat, no books to read
Making love with you
Has left me peaceful warm and tired
What more could I ask
There’s nothing left to be desired
Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak
So sleep, silent angel go to sleep

Sometimes all I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
Yes to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe

Peace came upon me and it leaves me weak
So sleep, silent angel go to sleep

Sometimes all I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
Yes to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe

Sometimes all I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
Yes to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
And to love you
All I need is the air that I breathe
Yes to love you
