#136 First Day of My Life- Lisa Loeb (Bright Eyes)

This is the first day of my life/
Swear I was born right in the doorway.

The lyrics of Lisa Loeb’s “First Day of My Life” are fantastic.  The original song was written by Bright Eyes. They are the most outstanding lyrics of the past twenty or so years. They are clear and concise.

There are not many songs that you can listen to for the first time and say “I understand what he/she is saying” AND “those are great lyrics”.  And also like the song. Sometimes you have to do a lot of work to find the inner-greatness in lyrics. Any song that hits you immediately is something to take notice of.

First Day of My Life Meaning
Lisa Loeb

There are so many great lines. I can’t think of many artists who hit on this level—lyrically—other than Dylan. And even that is a different kind of experience. Maybe Paul Simon is a better comparison. His lyrics are more accessible.

Brighteyes wrote the song

So why the Lisa Loeb version rather than Bright Eyes? It sounds better than the original. She adds a bit of melody to the song that is lacking in the original. (This is coming from a fan of folk music). She retains the simple guitar sound and overall feel…and also, her voice simply sounds better. No slight against the original version. This may be one of the more controversial choices on the list: not the song—the version.

First Day Of My Life Lyrics

This is the first day of my life
Swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain, suddenly everything changed
They’re spreading blankets on the beach

Yours was the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
And I don’t know where I am, I don’t know where I’ve been
But I know where I want to go

And so I’d thought I’d let you know
Yeah, these things take forever, I especially am slow
But I realized that need you
And I wondered if I could come home

Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning?
And I thought it was strange, you said everything changed
You felt as if you just woke up

And you said
“This is the first day of my life
I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But now I don’t care, I could go anywhere with you
And I’d probably be happy”

So if you wanna be with me
With these things there’s no telling
We just have to wait and see
But I’d rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery

Besides, maybe this time is different
I mean, I really think you like me

#134 Diamonds- Sia/ Rihanna

At first sight I felt the energy of sun rays/
I saw the life inside your eyes.

Rihanna made “Diamonds” famous and her version is great. Had I never heard Sia sing this song, Rihanna’s version would still be on this list. Then I heard Sia sing “Diamonds” on The Howard Stern Show live with just her and a piano. She put zero effort into the production.

Instantly you could see that Sia was the creative force behind the song and that there was something special about her singing it. Peculiarly, Rihanna mimics Sia’s Australian accent! That is so bizarre. What is even more bizarre is that it works for her.

Diamonds Greatest alltime song meaning
Sia

The lyrics are standard Sia: very anthem-y. I think she does these songs the best of anyone this side of Queen. For some reason they don’t feel contrite to me. They are able to achieve the right mix of fun and uplifting without feeling dumbed down or angry.

Diamonds Meaning
Rihanna

I would like to see Rihanna release more songs like this and Stay. I like her voice doing up-tempo ballads. I am not really into the other stuff she does.

Diamonds Lyrics

Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond.

Find light in the beautiful sea, I choose to be happy.
You and I, you and I, we’re like diamonds in the sky.
You’re a shooting star I see, a vision of ecstasy.
When you hold me, I’m alive,
We’re like diamonds in the sky.

I knew that we’d become one right away;
Oh, right away.
At first sight I felt the energy of sun rays,
I saw the life inside your eyes.

So shine bright tonight,
You and I.
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.
Eye to eye,
So alive!
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.

Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond,
Shining bright like a diamond,
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.

Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond,
Shining bright like a diamond,
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.

Palms rise to the universe, as we moonshine and molly.
Feel the warmth, we’ll never die,
We’re like diamonds in the sky.

You’re a shooting star I see, a vision of ecstasy.
When you hold me, I’m alive.
We’re like diamonds in the sky.
At first sight I felt the energy of sun rays.
I saw the life inside your eyes.

So shine bright
Tonight,
You and I,
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.
Eye to eye,
So alive!
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.

Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond,
Shining bright like a diamond,
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.

Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond,
Shining bright like a diamond,
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.

Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond.

So shine bright
Tonight,
You and I.
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky,
Eye to eye,
So alive!
We’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky,
Shine bright like a diamond,

#110 Love It If We Made It- The1975

Modernity has failed us/
And I’d love it if we made it.

“Love it if We Made it” by The 1975 comes in hot with some powerful lyrics about drugs, communication and survival. There aren’t many songs that hit you like this one does. It demands that you listen.

The message is mostly disturbing, but also hopeful. It is disturbing in that it paints a realistic picture of life in the 2010s. There aren’t many happy images. In fact, it seems like humanity and our sanity are at risk of extinction.

But The 1975 have hope, they’d love it if we survived this. But how? That’s for other people to figure out.

Love it if We Made It Meaning
1975

There is something to be said for stating the problem clearly and melodically. This is a variation of the protest song. It is a song that is socially conscious–like some of the great songs from the 60s and 70s. The melody is perfect for the message and unique. Matty Healy sings the vocals as if they matter. His tone is biting.

The intro provides a disorienting, dream-like sound that creates a great environment for the song. I’d Love it If We Made It is very well produced. The rhythm section is strong. They plow ahead relentlessly, and you begin to feel the weight of the song. Will this list of shitty problems ever end? You are almost exhausted by the end. Can we make it? Will we?

I can’t think of a better song to describe 2020 than “Love It If We Made It”.

Love It If We Made It Lyrics

We’re fucking in a car, shooting heroin,
Saying controversial things just for the hell of it.
Selling melanin and then suffocate the black men,
Start with misdemeanors and we’ll make a business out of them.
And we can find out the information,
Access all the applications,
That are hardening positions based on miscommunication.
Oh, fuck your feelings,
Truth is only hearsay;
We’re just left to decay,
Modernity has failed us.

And I’d love it if we made it.
Yes, I’d love it if we made it.
Yes, I’d love it if we made it.
Yes, I’d love it if we made it.

And poison me, daddy.
I’ve got the Jones right through my bones,
Write it on a piece of stone.
A beach of drowning three-year olds,
Rest in peace Lil Peep,
The poetry is in the streets.
Jesus save us,
Modernity has failed us.

And I’d love it if we made it.
Yes, I’d love it if we made it.
Yes, I’d love it if we made it.
Yes, I’d love it if we made it.
And I’d love it if we made it.
And I’d love it if we made it.
And I’d love it if we made it.
I’d love it if we made it.

Tell me something I didn’t know,
Consultation,
Degradation,
Fossil fueling,
Masturbation,
Immigration,
Liberal kitsch,
Kneeling on a pitch.

“I moved on her like a bitch”,
Excited to be indicted,
Unrequited house with seven pools,
“Thank you Kanye, very cool”.
The war has been incited and guess what?
You’re all invited,
And you’re famous,
Modernity has failed us.

And I’d love it if we made it.
And I’d love it if we made it.
And I’d love it if we made it.
Tell me something I didn’t know.
And I’d love it if we made it.
And I’d love it if we made it.
And I’d love it if we made it.
And I’d love it if we made it.
