#311 What Have I Done? LeAnn Rimes

What have I done?
I broke the sweetest heart of the only man/
That’s ever loved me.

In “What Have I Done?”, LeAnn Rimes has remorse for breaking the heart of her first love. It is a different take on the “lost love” theme in that it is clear that she is the one who broke his heart, but she is the one who is expressing the angst. Great concept.

Rimes believes she made the right decision, but still she is in pain. She says she hopes he will look back on her with happy feelings someday because “I loved you enough to let you go”.

At the same time, she says she wants to smash the mirrors in her house because she can’t stand to see her face because she is unhappy with herself for causing him pain. Can you feel you are making the right decision in leaving someone yet still hate yourself for doing it? Rimes thinks so.

What Have I Done? Meaning

Leann RimesRimes vocals on “What Have I Done” are strong and clear and accompanied by the standard country arsenal: banjo, slide guitar, bass and in a twist: a shaker rather than a drum for percussion! That gives the song a unique, mellow sound. This is Leann Rimes’ best song. It is also some of her more recent work, so perhaps there is more songs like this to come.

There are a couple country songs on this list. If a song is great, I don’t care what genre it is, it will make this list (except classical…I left those off this list. That seems like a list for another day. They don’t seem comparable.)

What Have I Done? Lyrics

Oh my love what have I done?
Oh my love what have I done?
I shot an arrow in your heart that
I can’t take back.
When I said, “You were my first love
But you are not my last”.

For far too long I hid my face,
I fed off your forgiving grace.
Well I know your pride it must’ve
Took a beating,
When I used your love to rob your freedom,
What have I done?

Oh what have I done?
What have I done?
There’s a hurt in me I don’t understand.
What have I done?
What have I done?
I broke the sweetest heart of the only man
That’s ever loved me.

I don’t know what I’ve become.
I need to get back to where I’m from.
I’m gonna smash every mirror in this empty house,
‘Cause like you I don’t wanna see myself.

Oh what have I done?
What have I done?

There’s a hurt in me I don’t understand.
What have I done?
What have I done?
I broke the sweetest heart of the only man
That’s ever loved me.

I hope you find someone new,
Someone who’s worthy of you.
Oh when you look back and I know you will
I hope you find a little good in me still,
‘Cause I loved you enough to let you go,
I’ll always regret,
I hope you know,
What I have done?

Oh what have I done?
What have I done?
There’s a hurt in me I don’t understand,
What have I done?
What have I done?
I broke the sweetest heart of the only one
That’s ever loved me.

Oh my love what have I done?
Oh my love what have I done?

#292 Stay- Rihanna

Something in the way you move/
Makes me feel like I can’t live without you.

Rhianna’s “Stay” is a song about two people in a relationship that are drawn to each other despite of– or perhaps because of– the dysfunction in their lives. They both seem to be hurting and when they are together, it fills a void that is lacking in their life. It seems to be a relationship of convenience….at least for now. But the feeling of attraction still feels just as strong as feelings of love due to the fact it is filling a need in each other’s life.

Stay Meaning
Rihanna

“Stay” works due to the great melody and the interplay between Rihanna and Ekko in this duet. They both play the part of a person tired of love, yet needing it, and you can hear it in their voices. The piano is the right instrument for this song. I feel Rihanna’s best work is usually when she does these ballads. It allows us to hear that she can sing well and she does not over-sing—like some of her diva counterparts.

Stay Lyrics

All along it was a fever
A cold sweat, hot headed believer
I threw my hands in the air, said, “Show me something”
He said, “If you dare, come a little closer”

Round and around and around and around we go
Oh, now tell me now, tell me now, tell me now you know

Not really sure how to feel about it
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can’t live without you
It takes me all the way
I want you to stay

It’s not much of a life you’re living
It’s not just something you take, it’s given

Round and around and around and around we go
Oh, now tell me now, tell me now, tell me now you know

Not really sure how to feel about it
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can’t live without you
It takes me all the way
And I want you to stay

Ooh, the reason I hold on
Ooh, ’cause I need this hole gone
Well, funny you’re the broken one
But I’m the only one who needed saving
‘Cause when you never see the light
It’s hard to know which one of us is caving

Not really sure how to feel about it
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can’t live without you
It takes me all the way
I want you to stay
Stay
I want you to stay
Ooh

#290 She Used To Be Mine- Sara Bareilles

And you’re not what I asked for/
If I’m honest, I know I would give it all back/
For a chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two.

Sara Bareilles’ “She Used to be Mine” might sound like a love song, but it isn’t-it is a song to her younger self. It was written to be part of the musical she wrote called Waitress. This is the main song from it. She released it as a single too. It is a song to the person she was in the past—who was much different than the person she is now. She was younger, more carefree, willing to take chances, open to love and had a fire in her eyes.

Now that fire is gone. Mostly due to complications that life brings, and her struggles to make a living. Even though we’re not supposed to look back at our glory days, a part of Sara’s character yearns for that time.

She Used to Be Mine Meaning
Sara Bareilles

Sara Bareilles has one of the most beautiful female voices in the past 20 or so years (I will also accept Sia and Adele). She is most known for a couple pop hits (Love Song, Brave) that really don’t show off her talents. Bareilles’ “She Used to be Mine” does a good job at showcasing her songwriting ability and her singing ability. She also plays piano.

‘She Used to be Mine” is tender, and we can hear it in the instrumentation but also in her voice. Sara can pull off singing about a better past without it sounding morose. Perhaps a better future is in store for the character.

She Used To Be Mine Lyrics

It’s not simple to say,
That most days I don’t recognize me.
That these shoes and this apron
That place and its patrons
Have taken more than I gave them.
It’s not easy to know,
I’m not anything like I used be, although it’s true.
I was never attention’s sweet center,
I still remember that girl.

She’s imperfect, but she tries,
She is good, but she lies.
She is hard on herself,
She is broken and won’t ask for help.
She is messy, but she’s kind,
She is lonely most of the time.
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie,
She is gone, but she used to be mine.

It’s not what I asked for,
Sometimes life just slips in through a back door
And carves out a person and makes you believe it’s all true.
And now I’ve got you.
And you’re not what I asked for,
If I’m honest, I know I would give it all back
For a chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two.
For the girl that I knew…

Who’ll be reckless, just enough.
Who’ll get hurt, but who learns how to toughen up,
When she’s bruised and gets used by a man who can’t love;
And then she’ll get stuck.
And be scared of the life that’s inside her,
Growing stronger each day ’til it finally reminds her
To fight just a little, to bring back the fire in her eyes,
That’s been gone, but used to be mine.

Used to be mine
She is messy, but she’s kind,
She is lonely most of the time.
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie,
She is gone, but she used to be mine.
