#448 Somewhere Only We Know- Keane

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I’m getting old, and I need something to rely on.

When we’re weary from our daily problems, sometimes we seek out familiar patterns and places to bring us comfort. In Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” it appears like a relationship is having difficulties and the man is asking his love to meet him at their private place that only they know about. It is special that he can just say “our place” and the two of them would both know where that is. He is reminding himself and her.

Somewhere Only We Know Meaning
Keane

Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” is driven by its strong melody. It is really catchy and powerful. The singing sounds like a man yearning for something: perhaps to be comforted by his love. The instrumentation is strong. Both piano and keyboards are used to strong effect. The drums are well done.

A strong, purposeful bridge helps bring the song home. The building of the song from piano in the beginning building towards forte at the end is the right choice. It feels like Keane starts sad and upon reflection sees a course of action to fix the relationship and needs to fix the relationship now.

Somewhere Only We Know Lyrics

I walked across an empty land,
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand.
I felt the earth beneath my feet,
Sat by the river and it made me complete.

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on.
So tell me when you’re gonna let me in.
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin.

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me.
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I’ve been dreaming of?

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I’m getting old and I need something to rely on.
So tell me when you’re gonna let me in.
I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin.

And if you have a minute, why don’t we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything.
So why don’t we go
Somewhere only we know?
Somewhere only we know.

So why don’t we go?
So why don’t we go?

Ahh
Ohh
This could be the end of everything.
So why don’t we go,
Somewhere only we know.
Somewhere only we know.
Somewhere only we know?

#446 Because of You- Kelly Clarkson

Because of you/
I never stray too far from the sidewalk.

In “Because of You” Kelly Clarkson writes about how parent’s mistakes and bad parenting can filter down to their kids. Her parents had fears and now she has those same irrational fears—and she can’t help them. This is why psychotherapy is multibillion-dollar business. This is a great song for all new and potential parents to listen to: look how much you can mess up your child. And this is screw-up is rather mild.

Because of You Meaning
Kelly Clarkson

“Because of You” is at its best when Clarkson is singing softly. If you have ever watched her or similar judges during The Voice one thing they constantly advise the contestants to do is to “have at least one moment”. What they are saying is that you must have one of those crazy vocal runs or the silly audience won’t be able to understand that you are singing with feeling.

Nonsense. Listen to Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Roberta Flack, Dusty Springfield…or singers who do use the occasional vocal run, but use it sparingly: Sara Bareilles, Adele, Stevie Nicks.

That being said, this is still a nice song with a good melody, interesting story and above average vocals.

Because of You Lyrics

I will not make
The same mistakes that you did
I will not let myself
Cause my heart so much misery
I will not break
The way you did, you fell so hard
I’ve learned the hard way
To never let it get that far

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don’t get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

I lose my way
And it’s not too long before you point it out
I cannot cry
Because I know that’s weakness in your eyes
I’m forced to fake
A smile, a laugh everyday of my life
My heart can’t possibly break
When it wasn’t even whole to start with

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don’t get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

I watched you die
I heard you cry every night in your sleep
I was so young
You should have known
Better than to lean on me
You never thought of anyone else
You just saw your pain
And now I cry in the middle of the night
For the same damn thing

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side so I don’t get hurt
Because of you
I try my hardest just to forget everything
Because of you
I don’t know how to let anyone else in
Because of you
I’m ashamed of my life
Because it’s empty
Because of you
I am afraid

Because of you
Because of you

#437 The Scientist- ColdPlay

Running in circles; coming up tails/
Heads on a science apart.

That line above is really good. A guy is trying to decide how to fix a relationship he screwed up (and seems to be continuing to screw up), his thought is to flip a coin, if it comes up tails go talk to her, heads he’ll be silent and hope she comes to him. This man is clearly using “reason” the wrong way, so calling him “The Scientist” is facetious-nor is this “coin-flipping” meant to be literal.

It is a good device to show that he is using all the wrong tools to connect with this girl (his own reason) and it is clearly failing. In the beginning of the relationship things were much better, now they are strained.

The Scientist Meaning
Coldplay

“The Scientist” has one of the most famous introductory piano parts in a pop song. It is a great piano song. Does anyone else think of Gwyneth (in her prime—pre-goop) when they hear this? It has the typical Coldplay structure, it starts out slow and builds into more instruments as more verses go by. It is a winning formula.

Martin’s voice is especially good. Interestingly, he begins to almost howl at the end of the song as if his words are betraying him but he still has things to communicate. And he does communicate a lot during that coda. It is very heartfelt.

The Scientist Lyrics

Come up to meet you
Tell you I’m sorry
You don’t know how lovely you are
I had to find you
Tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart

Tell me your secrets
And ask me your questions
Oh, let’s go back to the start
Running in circles, coming up tails
Heads on a science apart

Nobody said it was easy
It’s such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh, take me back to the start

I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling your puzzles apart
Questions of science, science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart

Tell me you love me
Come back and haunt me
Oh, and I rush to the start
Running in circles, chasing our tails
Coming back as we are

Nobody said it was easy
Oh, it’s such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard
I’m going back to the start
