#246 The Great Escape- Patrick Watson

Hey child, things are looking down.
That’s okay, you don’t need to win anyways.

I initially thought Patrick Watson’s “The Great Escape” was a song about suicide, but it clearly isn’t once you read the lyrics. It is about escaping from your chaotic life and getting away (perhaps to nature) and taking a deep breath and letting it all out. You feel a release. Realize that not everything has to be perfect in life and that these moments of escape are something to treasure.

The Great Escape Meaning
Patrick Watson

This song shares a similar theme with Christopher Cross’ Sailing: Escape, it’s good for the soul. In “The Great Escape” the narrator goes for a drive, Cross goes sailing. Later, Bruce Springsteen will go for a ride on his motorcycle.

This song is exceptional due to the minimalism of the piano and voice recording. It sounds almost as if it was recorded live on an upright piano extemporaneously.  Just piano with just his delicate voice is a perfect mixture for a song like this were Watson is trying to talk about one emotion using not that many words. The piano playing is functional and fits the melody well. Production did well by leaving the song alone.

The Great Escape Lyrics

Bad day, looking for a way home,
Looking for the great escape.
Gets in his car and drives away,
Far from all the things that we are.
Puts on a smile and breathes it in
And breathes it out, he says,
Bye bye bye to all of the noise.

Oh, he says, bye bye bye to all of the noise.
Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo
Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo noo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo

Hey child, things are looking down.
That’s okay, you don’t need to win anyways.
Don’t be afraid, just eat up all the gray
And it will fade all away.
Don’t let yourself fall down.

Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo
Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo noo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo

Bad day, looking for the great escape.
He says, bad day, looking for the great escape.
On a bad day, looking for the great escape,
The great escape.

#233 No One- Alicia Keys

No one, no one, no one/
Can get in the way of what I’m feeling.

Alicia Keys’ “No One” is a piano driven song, made great by Keys’ beautiful voice. Hearing Keys sing this song with just the piano is amazing. The version on the record is good too. It adds a synthesizer and additional sounds and beats but I don’t think the end product is necessarily better than the stripped down version. In a sense, the single is over-produced. Each version is great its own way.

No One Alltime Greatest Song Meaning
Alicia

The message of Key’s “No One” is straightforward. It is a declaration of love: no one and nothing can get in the way of the way she feels about her new love. Keys delivers these lyrics with meaning. We believe the feeling she has and that she is expressing.

Keys sings with passion and we believe her that she has found “No One” like her current lover. This is a great love song and a great showcase for Key’s talented vocals and piano chops.

No One Lyrics

I just want you close
Where you can stay forever
You can be sure
That it will only get better

You and me together
Through the days and nights
I don’t worry ’cause
Everything’s gonna be alright
People keep talking, they can say what they like
But all I know is everything’s gonna be alright

No one, no one, no one
Can get in the way of what I’m feeling
No one, no one, no one
Can get in the way of what I feel for you, you, you
Can get in the way of what I feel for you

When the rain is pouring down
And my heart is hurting
You will always be around
This I know for certain

You and me together
Through the days and nights
I don’t worry ’cause
Everything’s gonna be alright
People keep talking, they can say what they like
But all I know is everything’s gonna be alright

No one, no one, no one
Can get in the way of what I’m feeling
No one, no one, no one
Can get in the way of what I feel for you, you, you
Can get in the way of what I feel

I know some people search the world
To find something like what we have
I know people will try, try to divide something so real
So ’til the end of time, I’m telling you there ain’t no one

No one, no one, no one
Can get in the way of what I’m feeling
No one, no one, no one
Can get in the way of what I feel for you
Oh oh oh oh

#219 Gravity- Sara Bareilles

Set me free, leave me be/
I don’t want to fall another moment into your gravity.

Originally, Sara Bareilles released “Gravity” on her first album. It had the makings of a great song, but the production was off. On her second album she re-recorded “Gravity” and it became the amazing song it was meant to be.

I love songs with a good concept-and “Gravity” is a great concept for a song. The fact that no one had used the idea of gravity to describe another person’s impact on them is surprising.  Bodies attract bodies to create gravity.

Sara explains, regardless of whether I want to escape the laws of gravity, I cannot. Even though there doesn’t appear to be physical chains that bind us together—there is a stronger force—gravity. That is a good way to describe the way you are drawn to certain people; you can’t escape their orbit. It is a perfect metaphor.

Gravity Meaning
Sara

The piano part on Bareilles’ “Gravity” is not complex, but it is right for this song. The added strings for the later verses and chorus are formulaic, but it works. The light instrumentation is perfect because what we really want to hear is her voice. What makes this song great is her voice, combined with the concept and the melody. I always wondered why this song wasn’t a bigger hit. It seems perfect for an easy listening station.

Bareilles’ career is interesting in that she is known and defined by a couple of her pop songs, but the rest of her catalog contains tons of great songs that blow those away.

Gravity Lyrics

Something always brings me back to you,
It never takes too long.
No matter what I say or do,
I’ll still feel you here ’till the moment I’m gone.

You hold me without touch,
You keep me without chains.
I never wanted anything so much,
than to drown in your love and not feel your reign.

Set me free, leave me be.
I don’t want to fall another moment into your gravity.
Here I am, and I stand, so tall,
Just the way I’m supposed to be,
But you’re on to me and all over me.

Oh, you loved me ’cause I’m fragile,
When I thought that I was strong.
But you touch me for a little while,
And all my fragile strength is gone.

Set me free, leave me be.
I don’t want to fall another moment into your gravity.
Here I am, and I stand, so tall,
Just the way I’m supposed to be,
But you’re on to me and all over me.

I live here on my knees as I try to make you see
That you’re everything I think I need here on the ground.
But you’re neither friend nor foe though I can’t seem to let you go.
The one thing that I still know is that you’re keeping me down.
You’re keeping me down, yea.
You’re on to me, on to me, and all over.

Something always brings me back to you.
It never takes too long.
