#78 At My Most Beautiful- R.E.M.

I’ve found a way/
A way to make you smile.

In R.E.M.s “At My Most Beautiful” Stipe talks about how he is happy he has found ways to make his lover smile. Just doing simple things, like reading bad poetry into her answering machine makes her smile; so that makes him happy. He notices things about her. He sees her. Like how she always says her name when leaving a message—like he couldn’t have guessed by her voice.

He also notices the things she likes that he does: like when he whispers “I love you” while she is sleeping. These small things that they do for each other that they each enjoy is them at their most beautiful…or the best version of themselves. This is the best kind of love.

At My Most Beautiful Meaning
REM

These small, specific details make the song special and unique to a particular relationship. However, finding joy in treating your lover well is a universal theme. Taking the particular and making it universal is a way to make great art.

The melody of “At My Most Beautiful” is great, and we get to hear the band harmonize and they do it well. We hear an instrument combination that is hit or miss—the piano and organ combo. The key when combining the two is to go light on the organ or alternate them. REM is successful in this sense. The piano part is especially fun, and the playfulness of the piano part matches the theme of the song.

At My Most Beautiful Lyrics

I’ve found a way…to make you,
I’ve found a way,
A way…to make you smile.

I read bad poetry
Into your machine.
I save your messages
Just to hear your voice.
You always listen carefully
To awkward rhymes.
You always say your name,
Like I wouldn’t know it’s you.
At your most beautiful.
I’ve found a way to make you,
I’ve found a way…
A way to make you smile.
At my most beautiful.

I count your eyelashes, secretly.
With every one, whisper, “I love you”.
I let you sleep.
I know your closed eye watching me
Listening,
I thought I saw a smile.
I’ve found a way to make you,
I’ve found a way,
A way to make you smile.

#75 Creep- Radiohead

I want a perfect body/
I want a perfect soul.
I want you to notice.

“Creep” is the song that made Radiohead famous.  For a couple years it appeared Radiohead might be a one-hit wonder. That was mostly a function of how big this song was on the radio and how little commercial airplay the rest of their catalogue received.  In hindsight, they are one of the most important and influential bands of the 90s with Nirvana and Green Day.

Creep meaning
Radiohead
The narrator feels like a “creep” because that is how society has labels men who approach women who are more attractive. And he wants to approach a particular woman who is out of his league. He places her on a pedestal–this is obvious and problematic.  Equally problematic are his feelings of self-hatred for feeling attraction and society’s reaction to “ugly” people.

We initially feel him to be a sympathetic character. I believe this is what makes the song connect with so many people.  We have all had feelings of inferiority and approaching strangers is difficult for anyone. We are rooting for him and we identify with him.

However, things turn south toward the end of the song. He describes her running out the door.  Is this woman so insensitive, or is it more likely that he is exhibiting creepy behavior? Or perhaps he is an unreliable narrator and not telling us all the details or giving us a distorted version of the story. We don’t know.

The melody of the song is amazing as are the vocals. It does sound a bit like another song on this list, The Hollies The Air That I Breathe, so perhaps that is a particular chord progression that just works. Obviously, the songs are unique enough to both deserve a spot on this list. The best part of the song is when the electric guitar comes in on “I’m so fucking special… (tat)(tat)..(tat)(tat)…(wahhh)..(that’s a guitar sound).

Radiohead avoids playing it live, which is annoying. I don’t care if you’re sick of playing it. I payed a lot of money for this once in a lifetime experience. Sing the song I want.

Creep Lyrics

When you were here before
Couldn’t look you in the eye
You’re just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You’re so fuckin’ special

But I’m a creep
I’m a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here

I don’t care if it hurts
I wanna have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice
When I’m not around
You’re so fuckin’ special

I wish I was special
But I’m a creep
I’m a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here, oh, oh

She’s running out the door
She’s running out
She run, run, run, run
Run

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You’re so fuckin’ special
I wish I was special

But I’m a creep
I’m a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here
I don’t belong here

#73 Hallelujah- Jeff Buckley

And I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

The lyrics of “Hallelujah” are a bit out there. Typical Leonard Cohen. David played music that pleased God, but my girlfriend isn’t into music. Great. King David and Samson are people that struggled with the sexual aspects of love. Love can bring good, but it has its dark sides too. Given that and given that I have lived by myself before, I know that sometimes love is not always going to be great. Sometimes there are going to be problems, and that’s okay.

Hallelujah Meaning
Jeff Buckley

Our communication used to be great, now it isn’t, perhaps that is a source of some of our current problems. Look, love is tough, we should be surprised and grateful it ever happens at all. When you look at the lyrics closely, I feel like there is some sort of argument that is being made that symbolic logic and modus ponens could perhaps address better than I can.

Jeff Buckley’s version of “Hallelujah” where he plays with just an electric guitar is amazing. Sometimes solo electric guitar can sound off (usually it sounds better with an acoustic guitar). However, he pulls it off and delivers the biggest hit of his career, but also makes Cohen accessible to a new audience that would have never discovered him.

The melody is quite good. And although the chorus is simple, it is powerful, memorable with a great sound. Unfortunately, Buckley died young, so his catalog is not very deep, but this song is spectacular.

Hallelujah Lyrics

Well I’ve heard there was a secret chord,
That David played and it pleased the Lord.
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this-
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift,
The baffled king composing Hallelujah.
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof.
You saw her bathing on the roof,
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya.
She tied you to her kitchen chair,
And she broke your throne and she cut your hair.
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah.
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.

But baby I’ve been here before,
I’ve seen this room and I’ve walked this floor.
You know, I used to live alone before I knew ya.
And I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch,
And love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah.
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.

Well there was a time when you let me know,
What’s really going on below.
But now you never show that to me do ya?
But remember when I moved in you?
And the holy dove was moving too,
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah.
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.
Hallelujah,
Hallelujah.

Maybe there’s a God above,
But all I’ve ever learned from love,
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya.
And it’s not a cry that you hear at night,
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light,
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah.
Hallelujah.
