Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm-Crash Test Dummies

But both girl and boy were glad/
‘Cause one kid had it worse than that.

How many bands and songs truly sound unique? Very few. The Crash Test Dummies have one of the most unique sounds in rock music. “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” is their hit; it is truly a once-in-a-career song. The name comes from the humming of lead singer Brad Roberts during the chorus. It is kind of like if Hey Jude was named “Na, na, na, na, na, na na”.

This song is polarizing due to the novel sound of the vocal, but the meaning and the message of the song is pretty universal. The song is about three young teens and their “otherness” compared to their peers. The first two cases involve kids with minor physical deformities but are probably pretty traumatic experiences when these are discovered by their peers.

Note that we hear nothing about the kids’ emotional reactions, or lengthy descriptions about how bad their life is. The song is a bit emotionally detached in that way. Most of the emotion comes from the times we imagine our younger selves—and the struggle to fit in…middle-school seems like such a confusing time.

These first two kids have it bad, but another has it worse.

The Crash Test Dummies

The third character is different in another way. He looks normal, lives a seemingly normal life, though his parents are strict. However, his family attends a type of evangelical church that involves radical practices like being possessed by the spirit and perhaps speaking in tongues.

It is hard to imagine what psychological problems this might create in a young man, but the Crash Test Dummies are certain that this kid has it the worst of the three. The Crash Test Dummies argue that the psychological trauma from witnessing and being a part of this religion is more damaging to a child than a car accident or physical deformity.

The sound of the song is solemn. We get a feeling that the narrator feels for these outcasts and perhaps experienced being an outcast as a child. Since we can’t control accidents or physical deformities and how children react to other children who have these, this essentially becomes a song about bad parenting and anti-religion. These are choices that are made by the parent and they can be avoided. That is the real tragedy.

Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Lyrics

Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn’t come to school.
But when he finally came back,
His hair had turned from black into bright white.
He said that it was from when
The cars had smashed so hard.

Once there was this girl who
Wouldn’t go and change with the girls in the change room.
And when they finally made her,
They saw birthmarks all over her body.
She couldn’t quite explain it,
They’d always just been there.

Mmm mmm mmm mmm,
Mmm mmm mmm mmm.
Mmm mmm mmm mmm,
Mmm mmm mmm mmm.

But both girl and boy were glad,
‘Cause one kid had it worse than that.

‘Cause then there was this boy whose
Parents made him come directly home right after school.
And when they went to their church,
They shook and lurched all over the church floor.
He couldn’t quite explain it,
They’d always just gone there.

Mmm mmm mmm mmm,
Mmm mmm mmm mmm.
Mmm mmm mmm mmm,
Mmm mmm mmm mmm.

Secret Heart- Ron Sexsmith

This very secret you’re trying to conceal/
Is the very same one you’re dying to reveal.

Ron Sexsmith’s “Secret Heart” is a timeless song about our reticence to share our feelings of affection with others. Of course there is always a paralyzing fear of rejection, but what about the opposite force within you? The force that is dying to share your feelings with the one you love?

Is that not more important than preserving a sense of pride or seeming tough? Or a sense or remaining mysterious? Sexsmith argues it is not worth it. There is nothing to be afraid of—tell her, or him.

“Secret Heart” was released in the mid-90s, but you’d never know it. It has the feel of a song straight out of the 60s or 70s. There were a couple other great 90s songs that sounded really out of place, namely, “I’ll Stand By You”. Both sound like classic songs that could have been written and recorded in any prior decade.

Secret Heart Meaning
Ron Sexsmith

“Secret Heart’s sound is minimalistic-just a lone electric guitar. It is close to the folk-rock tradition in that it relies on its story and simple sound to deliver the emotion, rather than large orchestration or complex melodies. Sexsmith’s vocal is restrained. It is difficult to deliver emotion with restrained vocals, it is easy to deliver emotion while you’re wailing into the mic (That’s why we see it so often).

This is a great concept for a song, and I am surprised it is not written about more often. The only other song that jumps to mind with the same theme is Hey Jude. The difference is, here Sexsmith is trying to psyche himself up, whereas in Hey Jude, McCartney is looking at a young Julian Lennon and thinking of advice for him.

Secret Heart Lyrics

Secret heart
What are you made of?
What are you so afraid of?
Could it be three simple words,
Or the fear of being overheard?
What’s wrong?
Let her in on your secret, heart.

Secret heart,
Why so mysterious?
Why so sacred, why so serious?
Maybe you’re just acting tough,
Maybe you’re just not man enough.
What’s wrong?
Let her in on your secret, heart.

This very secret you’re trying to conceal,
Is the very same one you’re dying to reveal.
Go tell her how you feel!

Secret heart,
Come out and share it.
This loneliness, few can bear it.
Could it have something to do with
Admitting that you just can’t go through it alone?
Let her in on your secret.
What’s wrong, oh?
Let her in on your secret heart,
Your secret heart.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow- Israel Kamakawiwoʻole

Someday I’ll wish upon a star,
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me.

In “Somewhere Over the Rainbow (What a Wonderful World)”, Israel Kamakawiwoʻole delivers an extremely powerful vocal with the most stripped-down arrangement you will ever hear. Israel’s voice is accompanied by just a ukulele. The ukulele is not a sexy instrument—you won’t find it on many rock or pop songs, but here it works perfectly. It allows us to concentrate on Israel’s voice and the message.

Another unique aspect of this song is how Iz combines two songs into one—a medley. I can’t think of another instance of this—especially where it is implemented so seamlessly. I suppose this was one of the first mashups—kind of.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow (what a wonderful World)
Iz

The meaning of the song is about escape and hope. There is a yearning for another place, one where our dreams come true; but there is a sadness in the realization that this place might not exist on earth. Some people might greet the realization that happiness is not around the corner with despair. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” will have none of that.

Performing this song honestly is difficult to pull off. It is hard to believe a performer with such a radical vision of tomorrow. Someone who is hopeful of what is essentially the afterlife. By combining these two songs we get an idea of what Iz viewed his heaven would look like: It would keep the beautiful aspects of nature like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and add the brotherly love aspect of “What a Wonderful World”.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow (What a Wonderful World) Lyrics

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high,
And the dreams that you dream of
Once in a lullaby, oh.

Somewhere over the rainbow-
Bluebirds fly.
And the dreams that you dream of,
Dreams really do come true-ooh-ooh.
Someday I’ll wish upon a star,
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where trouble melts like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops that’s where,
You’ll find me, oh.

Somewhere over the rainbow,
Bluebirds fly;
And the dream that you dare to,
Oh why, oh why can’t I? I

I see trees of green and red roses too,
I watch them grow for me and you.
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.
Blessed skies are blue, I see clouds of white,
And the brightness of day, highlight the dark,
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow
So pretty in the sky,
I also one the faces of people passing by.
I see friends shaking hands saying,
“How do you do”?
They’re really saying “I love you.”

I hear babies cry and i watch them grow,
They’ll learn much more then we’ll know.
And i think to myself, “What a wonderful world!”
World…

Someday I’ll wish upon a star,
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where trouble melts like lemon drops,
High above the chimney top that’s where you’ll find me.
Oh, somewhere over the rainbow way up high,
And the dream that you dare to
Why, oh why can’t I? I
