#200 I’ll Stand By You- The Pretenders

Nothing you confess could make me love you less/
I’ll stand by you…

The Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You” is an emotional song. I love the thought of a bad-ass woman saying nothing you can say or do will make me love you less. What a song! When the song came out it had this weird quality: it seemed like it was a cover of a song I had heard before. It seemed like it belonged in another era- not 1994.

I'll Stand By You Meaning
The Pretenders

It was instant classic. In fact, I assumed it was a cover for many years. I can’t remember having this feeling many times in my life. Perhaps you’ve felt the same before? Like, how could this not have been written before? “Timelessness”.

Ill Stand By You Meaning
Chrissie Hynde

The highlight of the song is the lyrics and Chrissie Hynde’s unique delivery of the vocal. If you can feel love in someone’s voice, this is something close to what it sounds like. She sounds so sure of herself, yet her voice wobbles a bit: perhaps at the intensity of the words she is expressing. That’s what I like to think.

This song takes quite a journey—musically—from the beginning to the end of the song. In the beginning it is a tender love song. At the end it has become a full-out rock jam (listen to the drums). The background singing and lead guitar are especially worth noting.

I’ll Stand By You Lyrics

Oh, why you look so sad, the tears are in your eyes,
Come on and come to me now, and don’t be ashamed to cry,
Let me see you through, ’cause I’ve seen the dark side too.
When the night falls on you, you don’t know what to do,
Nothing you confess could make me love you less,

I’ll stand by you,
I’ll stand by you, won’t let nobody hurt you,
I’ll stand by you

So if you’re mad, get mad, don’t hold it all inside,
Come on and talk to me now.
Hey there, what you got to hide?
I get angry too, well, I’m alive like you.
When you’re standing at the cross roads,
And don’t know which path to choose,
Let me come along, ’cause even if you’re wrong

I’ll stand by you,
I’ll stand by you, won’t let nobody hurt you,
I’ll stand by you.
Baby, even to your darkest hour, and I’ll never desert you,
I’ll stand by you.
And when, when the night falls on you baby,
You’re feeling all a lone, you’re wandering on your own,
I’ll stand by you.

I’ll stand by you, won’t let nobody hurt you,
I’ll stand by you, baby even to your darkest hour,
And I’ll never desert you,
I’ll stand by you,

I’ll stand by you.
I’ll stand by you, won’t let nobody hurt you,
I’ll stand by you, baby even to your darkest hour,
And I’ll never desert you
I’ll stand by you

#195 Adam’s Song- Blink-182

I never thought I’d die alone/
I laughed the loudest who’d have known?

“Adam’s Song” is Blink-182’s song about a young man contemplating committing suicide. It is surprisingly touching, and contains a peak into the feelings Adam might have had prior to his death. We can only guess and extrapolate, as Adam did end up killing himself.

We learn of a young man, Adam, who was happy and lively and hopeful at 16. Life was good.  He always did  laugh the loudest. Soon afterwards, everything changed for him; things turned worse.

We don’t know why and perhaps Adam doesn’t completely understand it either. He describes it like his circuitry in his brain was unplugged. His hope is gone, and the only comfort he got was being alone in his room. And still, that was not much comfort.

Adam writes a note. The one sentiment Adam wants to get across is to make sure that his mom does not feel like this is her fault. At times, the letter sounds like an apology to his friends and family for inconveniencing them with his suicide. This makes the song that more haunting.

Adam's Song Meaning
Blink182

Adam realizes that his death will be forgotten in short time. This is something that he contemplates-even frets about-but it doesn’t do enough to move him to reconsider his actions. He is in that much pain.

“Adam’s Song” by Blink is sung amazingly well and powerfully by Mark Hoppus. We can hear the emotion in his voice that is sometimes lacking from the rest of his work. The arrangement of the song is great, particularly the drumming. The drumbeat is a very distinct pattern that suits the song quite well.

“Adam’s Song” uses a piano as a solo instrument, which I think is a good choice in this song. It adds a bit of appropriate tenderness to an otherwise hard rock recording, and serious subject. “Adam’s Song is Blink-182s best, most unique and enduring songs.

Adam’s Song Lyrics

I never thought I’d die alone,
I laughed the loudest who’d have known?
I trace the cord back to the wall,
No wonder it was never plugged in at all.
I took my time, I hurried up,
The choice was mine I didn’t think enough.
I’m too depressed to go on,
You’ll be sorry when I’m gone.

I never conquered, rarely came,
Sixteen just held such better days.
Days when I still felt alive,
We couldn’t wait to get outside.
The world was wide, too late to try,
The tour was over, we’d survived.
I couldn’t wait till I got home,
To pass the time in my room alone.

I never thought I’d die alone,
Another six months I’ll be unknown.
Give all my things to all my friends,
You’ll never step foot in my room again.
You’ll close it off, board it up,
Remember the time that I spilled the cup
Of apple juice in the hall,
Please tell mom this is not her fault.

I never conquered, when you came,
Sixteen just held such better days.
Days when I still felt alive,
We couldn’t wait to get outside.
The world was wide, too late to try,
The tour was over, we’d survived.
I couldn’t wait till I got home,
To pass the time in my room alone.

I never conquered, when you came,
Tomorrow holds such better days.
Days when I can still feel alive,
When I can’t wait to get outside.
The world is wide, the time goes by,
The tour is over, I’ve survived.
I can’t wait till I get home,
To pass the time in my room alone.

#191 Everybody Hurts- R.E.M.

If you think you’ve had too much/
Of this life. Well, hang on.

R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” has so much going right for it. The message is particularly comforting. For a rock star to speak plainly that even he hurts, that even he feels alone sometimes, that can be a comfort to many. That is one of the reasons “Everybody Hurts” has resonated with so many people.

Everybody Hurts Meaning
REM

The band R.E.M.s Everybody Hurts” addresses a common problem that everyone faces at some point in their life and delivers a simple message: “You’re not alone”. There is also another issue it addresses: suicide. Stipe’s answer is to “hang on”. For those in trouble, I think this is the perfect message to hear until they can get the proper medical treatment.

The melody of “Everybody Hurts” is great, though most songs at this level of the list will be. The production is stellar. Listen to the percussion. It is almost absent yet plays a key part in the transition from bridge to the next verse. I like the arpeggiated guitar pattern that is the backbone of the song. It is simple and steady, and fun to play (for those of you aspiring guitar players). The strings fill out the song perfectly. Stipe’s voice sounds good and he sings with meaning. “Everybody Hurts” has a bit of everything.

Everybody Hurts Lyrics

When your day is long.
And the night-
The night is yours alone.
When you’re sure you’ve had enough
Of this life.
Well hang on.

Don’t let yourself go.
‘Cause everybody cries,
And everybody hurts, sometimes.

Sometimes everything is wrong.
Now it’s time to sing along.

When your day is night alone (hold on).
(Hold on) if you feel like letting go (hold on).
If you think you’ve had too much
Of this life.
Well, hang on.

‘Cause everybody hurts.
Take comfort in your friends.
Everybody hurts.

Don’t throw your hand,
Oh, no.
Don’t throw your hand,
If you feel like you’re alone,
No, no, no, you’re not alone.

If you’re on your own
In this life.
The days and nights are long.
When you think you’ve had too much
Of this life.
To hang on.

Well, everybody hurts, sometimes.
Everybody cries.
And everybody hurts sometimes.
And everybody hurts sometimes.
So, hold on, hold on.

Hold on, hold on.
Hold on, hold on.
Hold on, hold on.
Everybody hurts.
You are not alone.
