#266 Jumper- Third Eye Blind

Everyone’s got to face down the demons/
Maybe today/
You could put the past away.

The narrator of Third Eye Blind’s “Jumper” sees his friend on a ledge, about to jump and commit suicide. What do you say to someone in this situation? What are the thoughts that run through your head? The narrator tries to empathize with the pain the jumper must be going through:

“We all have demons. If I was a problem, you never have to talk to me again, whatever it is I’d understand. But would you just step away from that ledge?”

He doesn’t.

Third Eye Blind

As his friend is dying, the narrator starts to contemplate life and says the beautiful lyric above. He then tells us to step away from our ledge and put the past away. “Jumper” is a very moving song.

A memorable aspect of the song is the guitar/drum break. It is a classic moment and it is significantly longer than the usual 10 second leads of the 1990s rock songs. This is not Third Eye Blind’s most popular song, but it is their best.

Jumper Lyrics

I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
You could cut ties with all the lies that you’ve been living in
And if you do not want to see me again
I would understand
I would understand

The angry boy, a bit too insane
Icing over a secret pain
You know you don’t belong
You’re the first to fight
You’re way too loud
You’re the flash of light on a burial shroud
I know something’s wrong
Well, everyone I know has got a reason
To say, “Put the past away”

I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
You could cut ties with all the lies that you’ve been living in
And if you do not want to see me again
I would understand
I would understand

Well, he’s on the table and he’s gone to code
And I do not think anyone knows
What they are doing here
And your friends have left you
You’ve been dismissed
I never thought it would come to this, and I
I want you to know
Everyone’s got to face down the demons
Maybe today you can put the past away

I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
You could cut ties with all the lies that you’ve been living in
And if you do not want to see me again
I would understand
I would understand
I would understand

Can you put the past away
I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
I would understand
I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
I would understand
I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
And I would understand
I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
I would understand
I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend
I would understand

#247 Feel’s Like Home- Chantal Kreviazuk

If you knew how lonely my life has been/
And how long I’ve been so alone.

Randy Newman wrote “Feel’s Like Home” in the 80s, but it was Chantal Kreviazuk (and also Edwina Hayes) who turned this song from a C into an A. The lyrics tell a simple story about a loving relationship feeling like home. Despite its simple concept, the meaning is elegant; the song is much more passionate than the title suggests.

Feels Like Home Meaning
chantal kreviazuk

The lover’s eyes makes the narrator lose herself and her heart beats fast at the sound of his voice. The best line of the song is the one above, and Kreviazuk rightly highlights it in her version. She was lonely and alone until her love came along. The meaning is simple but incredibly moving.

Feels Like Home Meaning
Edwina Hays

The upbeat piano in Kreviazuk’s version is an interesting contrast with the slow finger-picking guitar of Hayes version. Both are great interpretations. Both are also these artists best performances. Kreviazuk’s feels more like a celebration. She feels genuinely surprised by her emotions and the words she’s saying. It gets the slight edge.

Lyrics Feels Like Home

Something in your eyes,
Makes me want to lose myself.
Makes me want to lose myself
In your arms.

There’s something in your voice
Makes my heart beat fast.
Hope this feeling lasts,
The rest of my life.

If you knew how lonely my life has been,
And how long I’ve been so alone.
If you knew how I wanted someone to come along,
And change my life the way you’ve done.

It feels like home to me,
It feels like home to me.
It feels like I’m all the way back where
I come from.
It feels like home to me,
It feels like home to me.
Feels like I’m all the way back where I belong.

A window breaks down a long dark street,
And a siren wails in the night.
But I’m alright ’cause I have you here with me,
And I can almost see through the dark there is light.

If you knew how much this moment means to me,
And how long I’ve waited for your touch.
If you knew how happy you are making me,
I never thought that I’d love anyone so much.

It feels like home to me,
It feels like home to me.
It feels like I’m all the way back where
I come from.
It feels like home to me,
It feels like home to me.
Feels like I’m all the way back where I belong.

#226 Ghost- Indigo Girls

I’m in love with a ghost…

The narrator in The Indigo Girls’ “Ghost” takes out a letter from an ex-girlfriend from when they were together. Predictably, it sets her on a whirlwind of feelings, memories and emotions. She knows this is going to happen, but sometimes you just let your mind wander to your past.

Ghost Greatest Alltime Songs Meaning
Indigo Girls

The narrator is clearly still in love with her ex, even though the relationship is long over. This is not just a sorrow due to a relationship being over. She thought that this was ‘the one’ and she still feels this way.  Her ex-lover’s memory casts such a shadow on her current life that it is almost like she is living with a ghost.

This song is a great use of extended metaphor.  The ghost and the river are particularly powerful. Great writing.

“Ghost” a great example of a folk love song. There are finger-picking guitars, vocal harmonies and light percussion. At times it also borders on easy listening. Strangely, it never found a large audience. It is a true diamond-in-the-rough.

The Indigo Girl’s vocals and harmonies are particularly good. The lead vocal is delivered with conviction and we feel the agony in her voice.

Ghost Lyrics

There’s a letter on the desktop that I dug out of a drawer,
The last truce we ever came to
In our adolescent war.

And I start to feel the fever,
From the warm air through the screen,
You come regular like seasons
Shadowing my dreams.

And the Mississippi’s mighty
But it starts in Minnesota,
At a place that you could walk across
With five steps down.

And I guess that’s how you started
Like a pinprick to my heart,
But at this point you rush right through me
And I start to drown.

And there’s not enough room
In this world for my pain,
Signals cross and love gets lost,
And time passed makes it plain.
Of all my demon spirits
I need you the most,
I’m in love with your ghost.
I’m in love with your ghost.

Dark and dangerous like a secret, (don’t tell a soul)
That gets whispered in a hush.
When I wake the things I dreamed about you (don’t tell a soul)
Last night make me blush.

And you kiss me like a lover;
Then you sting me like a viper.
I go follow to the river,
Play your memory like a piper.

And I feel it like a sickness-
How this love is killing me.
I’d walk into the fingers
Of your fire willingly.
And dance the edge of sanity
I’ve never been this close,
In love with your ghost.

Ooh,
Unknowing captor:
You never know how much you
Pierce my spirit,
But I can’t touch you
Can you hear it-
A cry to be free?
Oh I’m forever under lock and key.
As you pass through me…

Now I see your face before me
I would launch a thousand ships,
To bring your heart back to my island,
As the sand beneath me slips.

As I burn up in your presence.
And I know now how it feels,
To be weakened like Achilles,
With you always at my heels.

My bitter pill I swallow
Is the silence that I keep.
It poisons me I can’t swim free
The river is too deep.
Though I’m baptized by your touch-
I am no worse than most.
In love with your ghost. (in love with your ghost)

You are shadowing my dreams!
(In love with your ghost)
(In love with your ghost)
