Live to Tell- Madonna

A man can tell a thousand lies/
I learned my lesson well…

Madonna’s “Live to Tell” is strong lyrically and musically and her vocals are impeccable. The song is about the narrator losing her innocence. Perhaps she was a child, perhaps this is a relationship she experienced when she was fairly young.  She doesn’t get into details.

We do know that a man deceived her and that she carries that secret within her. She anticipates that a time will come when she will be able to release herself of this burden. Until then, she must survive, in part, so as to see the truth come out. She must “live to tell”.

Live to tell meaning
Madonna

The mystery behind the secret is part of the allure of the song. We can imagine all sorts of unimaginable things that a child might have to endure and what a burden it would be to keep that inside. A child who only desires to live so that one day her trauma can some day be told is quite a powerful story. The fact that this narrator is (partially) revealing their secret is captivating. This is Madonna’s best writing.

The bridge is especially good (If I ran away, I’d never have the strength/To go very far…). It addresses a question that the listener must be asking, “Why haven’t you left?” The answer is not completely satisfactory, but by addressing it she acknowledges that she, too, is looking at this problem logically and trying to solve it in any way she can. It also suggests that she is still very much involved in the relationship that caused the trauma. She has not yet escaped.

Live to Tell meaning
Madonna

While the story and lyrics are fantastic, it is Madonna’s vocals that make this song great. She sings the song with the proper emotion that such a story deserves. In the 1980s, producers had a bad habit adding bizarre keyboard sounds, but the keyboards here sound great…with the bizarre sounds.

In “Live to Tell” the keyboards supplement Madonna’s voice. The keyboards also have a nice intro that really adds to the song. It is also a rare occasion in which a song uses various modes on a keyboard and it doesn’t sound gimmicky. That is a credit to production.

Live To Tell Lyrics

I have a tale to tell
Sometimes it gets so hard to hide it well
I was not ready for the fall
Too blind to see the writing on the wall

A man can tell a thousand lies
I’ve learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned, ’til then
It will burn inside of me

I know where beauty lives
I’ve seen it once, I know the warm she gives
The light that you could never see
It shines inside, you can’t take that from me

A man can tell a thousand lies
I’ve learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned, ’til then
It will burn inside of me

The truth is never far behind
You kept it hidden well
If I live to tell
The secret I knew then
Will I ever have the chance again

If I ran away, I’d never have the strength
To go very far
How would they hear the beating of my heart
Will it grow cold
The secret that I hide, will I grow old
How will they hear
When will they learn
How will they know

A man can tell a thousand lies
I’ve learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned, ’til then
It will burn inside of me

The truth is never far behind
You kept it hidden well
If I live to tell
The secret I knew then
Will I ever have the chance again

A man can tell a thousand lies
I’ve learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned, ’til then
It will burn inside of me

Here Comes Your Man- The Pixies

You’ll never wait so long/
Here comes your man.

There is a classic antidote that the only people who bought a Velvet Underground record ended up becoming a musician. Meaning–their albums never sold well, but years later, every band listed them as an influence.

A similar thing happened with The Pixies. They exploded because Kurt Cobain said it was his favorite band. Others in the 90s Seattle grunge scene said they, too, were influenced by The Pixies. Their legend has grown from there.

Here Comes Your Man
The Pixies

“Here Comes Your Man” is The Pixies most popular song. It is probably not indicative of the sound of the rest of their catalog, but it is their most catchy. The lead electric guitar part leaves the most immediate impression. The riff repeats throughout the song with only a slight variation. And that’s okay. It really is that good that we want to hear it over and over again.

The guitar has a sound that is similar to the sound of the early Beach Boys. It’s ‘surfy’– it is hard to articulate what makes that sound. It has the heavy reverb on the guitar, an upbeat tempo and relatively light mood.

The Pixies

The most unique characteristic of The Pixies sound is the experimentation with different volume levels throughout the song. That was used quite a bit in classical music, but not as much in rock before The Pixies.

Black Francis’ vocals are outstanding. We can hear his versatility. The vocals start relatively clean but at times during the chorus they can sound raw and filled with angst and emotion.

To say the lyrics are cryptic is an understatement. There are a bunch of hobos around a train (or boxcar). It is cold, they are lined up for food and waiting for their drug dealer. Then there is an earthquake. Francis wrote the song when he was only 14 so perhaps a little grace is required in the lyrics department.

Here Comes Your Man Lyrics

Outside there’s a box car waiting
Outside the family stew
Out by the fire breathing
Outside we wait till face turns blue

I know the nervous walking
I know the dirty beard hangs
Out by the box car waiting
Take me away to nowhere plains

There is a wait so long
(So long, so long)
You’ll never wait so long

Here comes your man
Here comes your man
Here comes your man

Big shake on the box car moving
Big shake to the land that’s falling down
Is a wind makes a palm stop blowing
A big, big stone fall and break my crown

There is a wait so long
(So long, so long)
You’ll never wait so long

Here comes your man
Here comes your man
Here comes your man
Here comes your man

There is a wait so long
(So long, so long)
You’ll never wait so long
Here comes your man

In Too Deep- Genesis

I thought you’d always be there/
I almost believed you…

Genesis’ “In Too Deep” can be interpreted several ways and you couldn’t be faulted for any number of different reads. Essentially, the song is about a romantic relationship that is coming to a head. There are actually two narrators: let’s call them the guy and the girl. The guy seems to be uncertain about making a commitment—though he does make promises with his words. The woman is just starting to realize that his actions are not matching up.

The guy wants to stay together; he thinks they have a good thing going. However, the woman has come to a realization: she loves him, but she can’t take his lack of commitment anymore. She knows what she wants now. She loves him and needs him, but she’s in too deep. It is time to let go.

He is not ready to let go as he pleads, and admits things are his fault. He is getting concerned because she is no longer looking at him lovingly…she is looking right through him. But she has made up her mind. They both feel disappointment about the promises they made to each other. She believed him, but not anymore.

Phil Collins

The song’s vocal and sound are filled with sadness and desperation, followed by resignation. It is quite a journey. The melody of the verse and chorus don’t feel like the most natural fit, but sound so great together. Note the excellent use of synthesizer– used as a background instrument to add depth of sound. A lot of 80s songs get that wrong: “In Too Deep” does it right.

Phil Collins voice is distinct and quite beautiful here. He uses falsetto sparingly for emphasis, and he transitions into it quite nicely. He has one of the most recognizable male voices in rock. The irregular fills of the drums add great color.

In Too Deep Lyrics

All that time I was searching with nowhere to run to
It started me thinking
Wondering what I could make of my life
And who’d be waiting
Asking all kinds of questions to myself
But never finding the answers

Crying at the top of my voice
And no one listening
All this time, I still remember everything you said, oho
There’s so much you promised, how could I ever forget

Listen, you know I love you, but I just can’t take this
You know I love you, but I’m playing for keeps
Although I need you, I’m not gonna make this
You know I want to, but I’m in too deep

So listen, listen to me
Ooh, you must believe me
I can feel your eyes go through me
But I don’t know why

Ooh, I know you’re going but I can’t believe
It’s the way that you’re leaving
It’s like we never knew each other at all
It may be my fault
I gave you too many reasons, being alone
When I didn’t want to

I thought you’d always be there
I almost believed you
All this time, I still remember everything you said, oho oh
Ooh there’s so much you promised, how could I ever forget

Listen, you know I love you, but I just can’t take this
You know I love you, but I’m playing for keeps
Although I need you, I’m not gonna make this
You know I want to, but I’m in too deep
So listen, listen to me
I can feel your eyes go through me

It seems I’ve spent too long
Only thinking about myself, oho
Now I want to spend my life
Just caring ’bout somebody else

Listen, you know I love you, but I just can’t take this
You know I love you, but I’m playing for keeps
Although I need you, I’m not gonna make this
You know I want to, but I’m in too deep
You know I love you, but I just can’t take this
You know I love you, but I’m playing for keeps
Although I need you, I’m not gonna make this
You know I want to, but I’m in too deep
You know I love you, but I just can’t take this
You know I love you, but I’m playing for keeps (you know I love you)
Although I need you, I’m not gonna make this (you know I love you)
You know I want to, but I’m in too deep
You know I love you, but I just can’t take this (I can’t take this)
You know I love you, but I’m playing for keeps.
