#315 Head over Heels- Tears for Fears

Something happens and I’m head over heels…
It’s hard to be a man when there’s a gun in your hand.

“Head over Heals” by Tears for Fears is an 80s classic about a man who has fallen in love with a woman. We get the sense that she holds all the cards, and is either not reciprocating or not giving him any indication one way or another whether she is interested in him.  Perhaps she is hung up on the past. She seems to parry his advances.

Head Over Heels Meaning
Tears For Fears

In the beginning of the song it sounds rather innocent but by the end it appears that this girl is occupying his mind so much that it is affecting his life in a negative way: his family used to have aspirations that he’d be a doctor and now just look at him, he’s a mess.

The line about how “it’s hard to be a man when there’s a gun in your hand”, seems to be a point of contention. I think he is expressing his unease about connecting with her. When you are holding a loaded gun you have to be super careful because if you pull the trigger there are no takebacks.

Likewise, at this stage of their relationship, he has done nothing to earn her trust and he feels like one misunderstood word could leave her running for the door. She is only entertaining him. One screw-up and she’ll move on to the next guy, He hasn’t earned her trust yet. It is hard to be man feeling and performing like this.

In the end he is still hoping it works out. It seems like he is waiting on her for a long time (“funny how time flies”). Overall, he feels emasculated and helpless. Something needs to change. Hopefully she will open up. She is so important to him.

The vocals, instrumentation and arrangement are all great in this song. The opening piano solo is classic. Also, excellent use of falsetto. The way he weaves in and out of falsetto is iconic.  We feel the narrator’s connection to the lyrics and make this a classic.

Head Over Heels Lyrics

I wanted to be with you alone
And talk about the weather.
But traditions I can trace against the child in your face
Won’t escape my attention.
You keep your distance with a system of touch
And gentle persuasion.
I’m lost in admiration, could I need you this much?
Oh, you’re wasting my time,
You’re just, just, just wasting time.

Something happens and I’m head over heels.
I never find out till I’m head over heels.
Something happens and I’m head over heels,
Ah, don’t take my heart, don’t break my heart
Don’t, don’t, don’t throw it away.

Throw it away.
Throw it away.
I made a fire and watching it burn.
Thought of your future.
With one foot in the past, now, just how long will it last?
No, no, no, have you no ambition?
My mother and my brothers used to breathe in clean in air,
And dreaming I’m a doctor.
It’s hard to be a man when there’s a gun in your hand.
Oh, I feel so…

Something happens and I’m head over heels.
I never find out till I’m head over heels.
Something happens and I’m head over heels,
Ah, don’t take my heart, don’t break my heart
Don’t, don’t, don’t throw it away.

And this my four-leaf clover!
I’m on the line, one open mind,
This is my four-leaf clover!
(La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la)

In my head, my mind’s eye,
One little boy, wandering by.
Funny how time flies.

#297 London Calling- The Clash

London calling to the faraway towns/
Now war is declared and battle come down.

In “London Calling”, The Clash reenacts the call made over the BBC during WW2 from the British Government to their citizens. They imagine a new war, or the next war, and they seem to anticipate that it will happen soon.

At the time this was written, London was not the tourist trap and world financial center it is today. There was poverty and fear about nuclear fallout. The Clash were anti-establishment and bringing awareness to their fans was part of their calling.

London's Calling Meaning
The Clash

“London Calling” sounds urgent as if an alarm is going off–predicting the ensuing chaos. The staccato notes on the electric guitar help to create this effect. The Clash was doubly concerned, they lived by the river, and it appeared that the river was vulnerable to attack. Was anyone listing?

The Clash were a big part of the Punk and anti-establishment culture that dominated English music in the early eighties. Note the intensity and urgency of the lyrics and the sound. This is quintessential 80s punk.

London Calling Lyrics

London calling to the faraway towns,
Now war is declared and battle come down.
London calling to the underworld,
Come out of the cupboard, you boys and girls.
London calling, now don’t look to us,
Phony Beatlemania has bitten the dust.
London calling, see we ain’t got no swing,
Except for the ring of the truncheon thing.

The ice age is coming, the sun’s zooming in,
Meltdown expected, the wheat is growing thin.
Engines stop running, but I have no fear,
‘Cause London is drowning…
I live by the river.

London calling to the imitation zone,
Forget it, brother, you can go it alone.
London calling to the zombies of death,
Quit holding out and draw another breath.
London calling and I don’t want to shout,
But while we were talking, I saw you nodding out.
London calling, see we ain’t got no high,
Except for that one with the yellowy eye.

The ice age is coming, the sun’s zooming in,
Engines stop running, the wheat is growing thin.
A nuclear era, but I have no fear,
‘Cause London is drowning.
I, I live by the river.

The ice age is coming, the sun’s zooming in,
Engines stop running, the wheat is growing thin.
A nuclear era, but I have no fear,
‘Cause London is drowning.
I, I live by the river.
Now get this…

London calling, yes, I was there, too,
And you know what they said? Well, some of it was true.
London calling at the top of the dial,
And after all this, won’t you give me a smile?
I never felt so much alike, alike, alike, alike.

#280 Love Will Tear Us Apart- Joy Division

Love will tear us apart, again.

Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” has a lot of contradictory concepts going on. Ultimately it is an upbeat song in a major key (two uplifting sounding things), sung in a depressing manner about a love falling apart (two depressing things). That is why the song creates so much dissonance when we listen to it. It has the effect of forcing us to listen to the lyrics.

Love Will Tear Us Apart Meaning
Joy Division

The lyrics of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” tell the story of a man analyzing his relationship in a fairly detached manner. Once there was love here…he thinks he remembers it. It was so long ago, and this is so far removed from a loving relationship that he questions himself. What did he do? Is he really that repulsive that he doesn’t at least deserve respect? Why does she cry when she sleeps? He is lost.

The most interesting word in the song is the word “again”: “Love will tear us apart, again.” Apparently, he has experienced this pattern with other women. Or perhaps, these two keep hurting each other. Either interpretation works. Because of his inability to break free when the love leaves, he is beginning to associate love as a negative thing.

The sound of the song is unique. Ian Curtis’ vocals are clear and dark while the keyboards almost sound like a psychedelic fairground. This song has one of the most tragic stories behind it. The lead singer, Ian Curtis, hanged himself a couple weeks before this song was released. The lyrics are about his marriage.

Love Will Tear Us Apart Lyrics

When routine bites hard,
And ambitions are low.
And resentment rides high,
But emotions won’t grow.
And we’re changing our ways
Taking different roads.

Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.

Why is the bedroom so cold?
Turned away on your side.
Is my timing that flawed?
Our respect run so dry?
Yet there’s still this appeal,
That we’ve kept through our lives.

But love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.

Do you cry out in your sleep?
All my failings exposed,
Gets a taste in my mouth.
As desperation takes hold
And it’s something so good.
Just can’t function no more?

Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear up apart again.
