#25 Diamonds and Rust- Joan Baez

We both know what memories can bring/
They bring diamonds and rust.

“Diamonds and Rust” is the song that Joan Baez wrote about her relationship with Bob Dylan. Baez was not a great songwriter; she was a great singer. “Diamonds and Rust” was the exception. It is such a personal tale with unique details that help bring the story to life with universal observations that solidify the song as applicable to any relationship.

Diamonds and Rust Meaning
Joan Baez

Ten years after their breakup, Joan gets a phone call from Dylan. It is random: out of the blue. It brings about a flood of thoughts and emotions. What does she mean by “Diamonds and Rust”? Well, some of her memories of him have aged like diamonds, some like rust. Her description of the onslaught of her feelings and her recollection of their relationship is great songwriting.

They decide to meet after all these years. The scene is described in one of the best bridges of all time: At first it is as magical as the movies. Her description is poetic. All the loving memories rush over her. The music swells to a crescendo…

Baez and Dylan

Then they start talking. And it becomes clear why they broke up. It appears he may even want to give the relationship another go–but for her it is a hard no.

“Diamonds and Rust” is another song that I cannot believe does not get more airplay. It is so beautiful, and it is an icon at her absolute best. The guitar part is unique, as is the chord progression. Again, the bridge is amazing. She changes the sound as the scene is changed and we can hear the lightness and happiness of their reuniting. Followed by the abrupt return to the sad minor key when they start to talk again. Joan’s voice is amazing. She tends to go slightly overboard on the vibrato, but it bothers me less with her than others who do this.

Diamonds And Rust Lyrics

Well, I’ll be damned.
Here comes your ghost again,
But that’s not unusual,
It’s just that the moon is full,
And you happened to call.
And here I sit
Hand on the telephone,
Hearing a voice I’d known
A couple of light years ago,
Heading straight for a fall.

As I remember your eyes
Were bluer than robin’s eggs.
My poetry was lousy you said.
Where are you calling from?
“A booth in the Midwest”.
Ten years ago
I bought you some cufflinks.
You brought me something;
We both know what memories can bring-
They bring diamonds and rust.

Well, you burst on the scene
Already a legend.
The unwashed phenomenon;
The original vagabond-
You strayed into my arms.
And there you stayed,
Temporarily lost at sea.
The Madonna was yours for free,
Yes, the girl on the half-shell.
Could keep you unharmed.

Now I see you standing
With brown leaves falling all around
And snow in your hair.
Now you’re smiling out the window
Of that crummy hotel
Over Washington Square.
Our breath comes out white clouds,
Mingles and hangs in the air.
Speaking strictly for me
We both could have died then and there.

Now you’re telling me
You’re not nostalgic.
Then give me another word for it-
You who are so good with words,
And at keeping things vague.
‘Cause I need some of that vagueness now
It’s all come back too clearly.
Yes, I loved you dearly.
And if you’re offering me diamonds and rust,
I’ve already paid.

#23 Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen

I don’t want to die/
I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all.

Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” is one of the most ambitious songs in pop/rock music history. There are only a few that come close to rivaling it. Good Vibrations and Court of the Crimson King are the only two that come to mind. Bohemian Rhapsody is really three or five songs in one. The best part is “Mama, just killed a man…” That would have made a fine ballad on its own.

Bohemian Rhapsody’s lyrics are a bit obscure, but it seems to tell the tale of the narrator who is about to leave town and is having one last conversation with his mother. Along his journey he pleads with the gods and tries to justify his actions to the gods but it seems to fall on deaf ears.

Bohemian Rhapsody meaning
Freddie Mercury and Brain May

There is a structure behind the scenes that we might not be conscious of. Part of that is intentional. It is a story about a man’s journey…and that journey takes him in many wildly different directions–internally and externally. We hear that in the music and the lyrics. Mercury carefully crafted this. The song is a Rhapsody about a Bohemian. A moody, episodic freer form of music about a person who lives as unconventional lifestyle: Bohemian Rhapsody.

This is one of the most beloved rock songs of all times. That is kind of peculiar. For the people who love it, 90% of them would say they hate opera and musicals, but “Bohemian Rhapsody” shares a lot of similarity with those genres. It really is the most unlikely hit. Except that it is amazing. It elevates and transcends pop and rock.

Bohemian Rhapsody Meaning
Queen

The harmonies are some of the best in any song by Queen. The guitar solo by May is iconic. It is progressive/hard rock sandwiched between two ballad-y aspects of the song. Who would think that would work? This is also the third song on this list mentioning the Fandango. They were wild about that dance in the 70s!

Bohemian Rhapsody Lyrics

Mama, just killed a man.
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger, now he’s dead.
Mama, life had just begun.
But now I’ve gone and thrown it all away.

Mama, ooh,
Didn’t mean to make you cry,
If I’m not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on,
As if nothing really matters.

Too late, my time has come,
Sends shivers down my spine
Body’s aching all the time.
Goodbye everybody, I’ve got to go-
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth.

Mama, ooh,
I don’t want to die,
I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all.

I see a little silhouetto of a man,
Scaramouch, Scaramouch, will you do the Fandango!

Thunderbolts and lightning, very, very frightening me,
Galileo, Galileo,
Galileo, Galileo,
Galileo, Figaro – magnificoo.

I’m just a poor boy nobody loves me,
He’s just a poor boy from a poor family,
Spare him his life from this monstrosity.

Easy come, easy go, will you let me go,
Bismillah! No, we will not let you go.
(Let him go!) Bismillah! We will not let you go
(Let him go!) Bismillah! We will not let you go
(Let me go) Will not let you go
(Let me go)(Never) Never let you go
(Let me go) (Never) let you go (Let me go) Ah
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia, let me go,
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me,
For meee.

So you think you can stop me and spit in my eye?
So you think you can love me and leave me to die?
Oh, baby, can’t do this to me, baby,
Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here.

Nothing really matters, Anyone can see,
Nothing really matters,
Nothing really matters to me
Any way the wind blows…

#22 Father & Son- Cat Stevens

From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen/
Now there’s a way and I know that I have to go away.

In “Father and Son”, Cat Stevens does something on this song that I am surprised is not used more often. He uses different voices for different characters in the songs. The song is about a father and a son attempting to communicate to each other—but with limited success.

For the voice of the father, Stevens uses a lower register; for the son, he uses a higher voice. The background singers seem to be singing the opposite characters’ perspective when Stevens sings lead, though this fact it not as important for catching the gist of the song.

Father and Son Meaning
Cat Stevens

It is a brilliant composition and concept for a song. Ultimately neither the father or the son is right or wrong. I imagine that your interpretation of the lyrics would be influenced heavily by where you are in life. Stevens does a good job of presenting both sides fairly. The father makes a great point: “You may still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.”

I find “Father and Son” to be very emotionally moving, and I can imagine this situation playing out across the world every day. Or, more accurately, all the time, throughout time. I don’t believe this song ever got much radio play or is considered the masterpiece that it is except by Stevens fans—which surprises me given its universal themes, strong melody, unique concept and strong vocal performance. This might be one of the most under-rated songs on this list.

More great songs by Cat Stevens.

Father and Son Lyrics

(father)
It’s not time to make a change,
Just relax, take it easy.
You’re still young, that’s your fault,
There’s so much you have to know.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I’m happy.

I was once like you are now, and I know that it’s not easy
To be calm when you’ve found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you’ve got;
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

(son)
How can I try to explain? ‘Cause when I do he turns away again.
It’s always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen!
Now there’s a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

(father)
It’s not time to make a change,
Just sit down, take it slowly.
You’re still young, that’s your fault,
There’s so much you have to go through.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I’m happy.

(Son)
All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside!
It’s hard, but it’s harder to ignore it.
If they were right, I’d agree, but it’s them they know not me,
Now there’s a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.
