#192 My Sweet Lord- George Harrison

I really want to know you.
(Krishna, Krishna).

We talk a lot about Lennon and McCartney, and rightfully so. But towards the later years of The Beatles, George Harrison had almost become an equal of theirs in terms of song writing. “My Sweet Lord” was the first hit for the Post-Beatles Beatles, and it belongs to Harrison.

George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” is a very religious song: just as much as “Spirit in the Sky” or “Lonely People”, which are two religious’ songs on this list. Both of those are more in the Judeo-Christian tradition, however; this is for the Hindu God Krishna. Harrison sings a song about wanting a personal relationship with Krishna.

My Sweet Lord Meaning
Harrison

Musically, the most notable aspect of “My Sweet Lord” is the slide guitar. At this point in his career, Harrison had perfected his style to the point where you could tell it is him playing. The choir is a nice piece of production by Phil Spector. Choirs are a great way to bring that somber or religious feeling to a song. They are a nice counterpoint to Harrison’s lead vocals. This is one of George’s best. It is great for its simplicity, and its ability to address a very personal issue with lyrics that are more universal– and thus relatable– to a greater audience.

My Sweet Lord Lyrics

My sweet Lord
Mmm, my Lord
Mmm, my Lord

I really wanna see you
Really wanna be with you
Really wanna see you, Lord
But it takes so long, my Lord

My sweet Lord
Mmm, my Lord
Mmm, my Lord

I really wanna know you
I’d really wanna go with you
I really wanna show you, Lord
That it won’t take long, my Lord

(Hallelujah)
My sweet Lord (Hallelujah)
Mmm, my Lord (Hallelujah)
My sweet Lord (Hallelujah)

I really wanna see you
Really wanna see you
Really wanna see you, Lord
Really wanna see you, Lord
But it takes so long, my Lord

[Chorus]
(Hallelujah)
My sweet Lord (Hallelujah)
Mmm, my Lord (Hallelujah)
My, my, my Lord (Hallelujah)

[Verse 2]
I really wanna know you (Hallelujah)
Really wanna go with you (Hallelujah)
I really wanna show you, Lord
That it won’t take long, my Lord

(Hallelujah)
Mmmmm (Hallelujah)
My sweet Lord (Hallelujah)
My, my Lord (Hallelujah)

#189 How Can I Tell You- Cat Stevens

It always ends up to one thing, honey/
And I can’t think of right words to say.

When a poet feels something so immense that he can’t think of words to describe how he is feeling it becomes difficult to write songs. “How Can I Tell You” is Cat Stevens attempt to deal with this very problem. He feels immensely for this girl, but does the word “immensely” even begin to signify the feelings of his racing mind and raging heart? They really don’t.

How Can I Tell You Meaning
Cat

“How Can I Tell You” is about the “ineffable”: that which cannot be put into words. Some great loves might elicit feelings that transcend normal means of communication. Thus, perhaps a song will have to do. Jim Croce, expresses a similar sentiment in “I’ll have to Say I Love You in a Song”.

I love Cat Steven’s light guitar intro. The pace is perfect. Overall, the finger-picking is amazingly delicate and perfect for the song. Stevens voice sounds great, as he delivers a performance about his inability to communicate his love to a woman. The light use of a flute and one line of a background singer highlights the proper message. Note how Stevens can convey emotion without straining his voice, nor doing vocal runs and barely changing volumes. He is a master.

How Can I Tell You Lyrics

How can I tell you
That I love you?
I love you,
But I can’t think of right words to say.

I long to tell you,
That I’m always thinking of you.
I’m always thinking of you,
But my words just blow away.
Just blow away.

It always ends up to one thing, honey
And I can’t think of right words to say.

Wherever I am girl
I’m always walking with you.
I’m always walking with you,
But I look and you’re not there.

Whoever I’m with
I’m always, always talking to you.
I’m always talking to you,
And I’m sad that you can’t hear,
Sad that you can’t hear.
It always ends up to one thing, honey
When I look and you’re not there.

I need to know you.
Need to feel my arms around you,
Feel my arms surround you
Like a sea around a shore.

Each night and day I pray
In hope that I might find you.
In hope that I might find you,
Because heart’s can do no more;
Can do no more.

It always ends up to one thing, honey
Still I kneel upon the floor.

How can I tell you
That I love you?
I love you,
But I can’t think of right words to say.

I long to tell you
That I’m always thinking of you.
I’m always thinking of you,
It always ends up to one thing, honey,
And I can’t think of right words to say.

#184 Long Long Time- Linda Ronstadt

time washes clean love’s wounds unseen/
That’s what someone told me but I don’t know what it means.

“Long Long Time” by Linda Rondstadt and the Stone Poneys is a fantastic song, and it is well deserving to be on this list. It would be more interesting if Linda Rondstadt wrote her songs, because the message of this song is so different from her other hit “Different Drum” some five years or so before. With Different Drum she wasn’t in the market for a boy who wanted to love only her.  In Long Long Time she is doing everything she can to try and make him love her…but she is failing.

Long Long Time Meaning
Linda Ronstadt & the Stone Poneys

“Long Long Time” follows the Different Drum script of backing her with an orchestra. That sounds much better than she did with just the Stone Poneys. Her voice is powerful, and it needs the full wall of orchestra sound behind her to compliment her. At this point in her career she was gigging with an interesting session band. On the drums were Don Henley and on guitar was Glen Frey. Two nobodies, at the time.

Long Long Time Lyrics

Love will abide, take things in stride,
Sounds like good advice, but there’s no one at my side.
And time washes clean, love’s wounds unseen.
That’s what someone told me, but I don’t know what it means.

‘Cause I’ve done everything I know,
to try and make you mine.
And I think I’m gonna love you,
For a long long time.

Caught in my fears.
Blinking back the tears.
I can’t say you hurt me, when you never let me near.
And I never drew, one response from you.
All the while you fell, all over girls you never knew.
‘Cause I’ve done everything I know, to try and make you mine.
And I think it’s gonna hurt me, for a long long time.

Wait for the day,
You’ll go away.
Knowing that you warned me of the price I’d have to pay.
And life’s full of flaws,
Who knows the cause?
Living in the memory, of a love that never was.

‘Cause I’ve done everything I know, to try and change your mind.
And I think I’m gonna miss you, for a long long time.
‘Cause I’ve done everything I know, to try and make you mine.
And I think I’m gonna love you, for a long long time.
