#268 Ohio- Neil Young

Four Dead in Ohio…
Soldiers are cutting us down.

Neil Young’s “Ohio” is the true story of four students shot dead in the middle of a college campus by US soldiers. How did it happen? For those that don’t know the history of Neil Young’s “Ohio”, read more about the Kent State shootings in 1970. Soldiers shot four students there. It was a crazy time. Part of the power of the song comes from the backdrop of the song. But of course, the song would not be remembered if not for the strong melody–as there are many protest songs.

Interestingly, the song names “Nixon” in it. You would think that the song loses its timeliness by inserting so much politics into it, but it has the opposite effect. We remember what events caused Young to write this song that still resonates all this years later.

Ohio Greatest Alltime Song Meaning
Young

“Ohio” was also recorded as a CSNY record and it has all the staples: beautiful harmonies, tons of guitars, emotional songs and great songwriting. I have argued that The Beach Boys have the best harmonies but if you think it is CSNY I think that is a fine choice as well.

“Ohio” is both one of Neil Young and CSNYs harder rock songs. You can hear the anger in Young’s voice. This was the end of an age of protest songs in American rock music. Springsteen would produce some years later, R&B would take up the mantle in the 70s and the UK punk scene would produce some in the 80s but looking back, this was the end of an era.

Ohio Lyrics

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We’re finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio. Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know? Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know? Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We’re finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

#264 Our House- CSNY

Life used to be so hard/
Now everything is easy ’cause of you.

CSNYs “Our House” suffers a bit in the reputation department due to it being featured prominently in insurance company ads for awhile. It is not that I am against artists monetizing their work, but sometimes the ads work and they play them over and over again. Also, there is a difference between a one hit wonder monetizing their song vs a band like CSNY. CSNY is set for life.

Our House Meaning
CSNY

Anyways, one of the nice things about “Our House” is the simple description of happiness that Nash describes. He just wants to be with his woman in their house—together. A yard with room for some cats would be great. Oh, and if you didn’t know—this song is about his house with Joni Mitchell. Tragically, I heard a recent interview where he called her the “love of his life”. It was weird listening to a man say that about someone who is alive who he is in no longer with. Quite shocking really.

Nash is to CSNY as Lindsay Buckingham is to Fleetwood Mac, or Brian Wilson to The Beach Boys. Not only was he a prominent songwriter and lead singer, he was the most influential part of creating the band’s sound. He is also one of the few two-time inductees to the rock n roll hall of fame: he also got in with The Hollies. Like all Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young songs, the harmonies really stand out. The four of them really sound amazing together. This is one of their few songs that feature the piano.

Our House Lyrics

I’ll light the fire.
You put the flowers in the vase
that you bought today.

Staring at the fire for hours and hours
while I listen to you
Play your love songs all night long for me-
Only for me.

Come to me now,
And rest your head for just five minutes,
Everything is good.
Such a cozy room,
The windows are illuminated,
By the evening sunshine through them,
Fiery gems for you-
Only for you.

Our house is a very, very, very fine house,
With two cats in the yard.
Life used to be so hard.
Now everything is easy ’cause of you.
And our la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.

Our house is a very, very, very fine house,
With two cats in the yard.
Life used to be so hard.
Now everything is easy ’cause of you.
And our…

I’ll light the fire,
While you place the flowers in the vase
That you bought today.

#259 Sara- Fleetwood Mac

Sara, you’re the poet in my heart/
Never change, and don’t you ever stop.

“Sara” is a Stevie Nicks song off of the Tusk album. Many of Nicks’ lyrics are esoteric, but “Sara” is at the top of the list in terms of opacity in the lyrics. Sara is important to Nicks but something changed in their relationship. It appears to involve a man. Nicks is telling Sara that she loves her and when everything settles down, she will still be there for her. It is rumored this song had something to do with the breakup of Nicks and Mick Fleetwood, but who knows.

Sara Greatest Alltime Song Meaning
Stevie

The melody of the chorus is what drives this song.  It has that quality- that “I think I have heard this before” quality. McCartney held off on finishing writing Yesterday for some time because he could have sworn it must already be a song. I feel the same thing about Sara. It feels like it already existed.

The bassline is solid in this song and it adds a lot. John McVie gets the least amount of recognition of the Fleetwood Mac cast, but he is consistent and innovative.  The production is amazing—especially during the verses. If you listen to the pieces of the song there is so much going on in the background. Notice how the piano doesn’t play chords throughout the verse: it sounds more like random chimes. A great job by Lindsey Buckingham.

Sara Lyrics

Wait a minute baby
Stay with me awhile
Said you’d give me light
But you never told me about the fire

Drowning in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
But now it’s gone
It doesn’t matter what for
When you build your house
Then call me home

And he was just like a great dark wing
Within the wings of a storm
I think I had met my match, he was singing
And undoing, and undoing the laces
Undoing the laces

Said Sara, you’re the poet in my heart
Never change, never stop
But now it’s gone
It doesn’t matter what for
But when you build your house
Then call me home

Hold on
The night is coming and the starling flew for days
I’d stay home at night, all the time
I’d go anywhere, anywhere, anywhere
Ask me and I’m there, yeah
Ask me and I’m there, I care

In the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
But now it’s gone
They say it doesn’t matter anymore
When you build your house
Then please call me home

Sara, you’re the poet in my heart
Never change, and don’t you ever stop
Now it’s gone
No it doesn’t matter anymore
When you build your house
I’ll come by
Sara
