#295 Lyin’ Eyes- The Eagles

City girls just seem to find out early/
How to open doors with just a smile.

“Lyin Eyes” is from the early period of The Eagles work. The Eagles work is best understood as before Joe Walsh and after. This is before, Hotel California was after. Notice the country stylings. The Eagles were very much a southern rock band in the beginning…but from California rather than Alabama.

Lyin’ Eyes is a great ‘story song’ about a young woman who takes an older husband—presumably for his money—but still keeps another lover on the side. This girl is not painted kindly in the song. The great opening lyrics above paint her as a woman who uses her sexuality to get everything she wants in life. They euphemistically call her a city girl. Today we’d call her a sugar baby (I guess?).

Lyin' Eyes Meaning
The Eagles

The story is interesting because of the little details: it appears that she loves her boyfriend and promises to leave her husband, it also appears that the husband is aware of the affair and perhaps turns his head to it due to indifference or due to powerlessness. Regardless, you can see the lie in her eyes. She does not come across as a sympathetic character.

This song shows off some of the great harmonizing that the Eagles produced. While they weren’t on the level with the all-time best (in terms of harmonizing), they were one tier below. They sing some pretty complex harmonies here. The bassline does a lot to drive this song, though it is not fancy. This is good work by Randy Meisner. Glenn Frey or Don Henley were responsible for most of their songs and this might be Frey’s best.

Lyin’ Eyes Lyrics

City girls just seem to find out early,
How to open doors with just a smile.
A rich old man
And she won’t have to worry,
She’ll dress up all in lace and go in style.

Late at night a big old house gets lonely-
I guess every form of refuge has its price.
And it breaks her heart to think her love is only
Given to a man with hands as cold as ice.

So she tells him she must go out for the evening-
To comfort an old friend who’s feelin’ down.
But he knows where she’s goin’ as she’s leavin’,
She is headed for the cheatin’ side of town.

You can’t hide your lyin’ eyes,
And your smile is a thin disguise.
I thought by now you’d realize,
There ain’t no way to hide your lyin’ eyes.

On the other side of town a boy is waiting,
With fiery eyes and dreams no one could steal.
She drives on through the night anticipating,
‘Cause he makes her feel the way she used to feel.

She rushes to his arms, they fall together.
She whispers that it’s only for awhile.
She swears that soon she’ll be comin’ back forever,
She pulls away and leaves him with a smile.

You can’t hide your lyin’ eyes,
And your smile is a thin disguise.
I thought by now you’d realize,
There ain’t now way to hide your lyin’ eyes.

She gets up and pours herself a strong one,
And stares out at the stars up in the sky.
Another night, it’s gonna be a long one.
She draws the shade and hangs her head to cry.

She wonders how it ever got this crazy.
She thinks about a boy she knew in school.
Did she get tired or did she just get lazy?
She’s so far gone she feels just like a fool.

My oh my, you sure know how to arrange things.
You set it up so well, so carefully.
Ain’t it funny how your new life didn’t change things?
You’re still the same old girl you used to be.

You can’t hide your lyin’ eyes,
And your smile is a thin disguise.
I thought by now you’d realize,
There ain’t no way to hide your lyin’ eyes.
There ain’t no way to hide your lyin’ eyes.
Honey, you can’t hide your lyin’ eyes.

#287 Run To Me- The Bee Gees

Am I unwise to open up your eyes to love me?

In “Run To Me”, The Bee Gees’ demonstrate beautiful harmonies. Notice how they layer the vocals. They add one voice at a time during the chorus so that you can really hear their mastery of harmonizing. If you like harmonies, they are tier one, up there with The Beach Boys and Simon and Garfunkel.

I feel that “Run To Me” is on of The Bee Gees more accessible songs for non-Bee Gees fans as there is minimal falsetto, it is a rock song with a great melody, it isn’t disco and the vocal vibrato is mostly minimized. Sometimes Barry can go crazy with the vibrato—but that was his thing.

Run To Me Meaning
Bee Gees

“Run to Me” asks an interesting question: “Am I unwise to open up your eyes to love me?” That is, how much action should I take to make someone love me versus just hoping that someone will naturally be drawn to me. If I open up someone’s eyes, does that make the love any less pure? I don’t think so. Perhaps Cupid just needs a kick in the ass sometimes.

But it would be nice if life were like the movies were everything was a series of meet-cutes where we were stumbling into potential partners every day. Since it isn’t, we might have to actively open up someone’s eyes to receive love.

Run To Me Lyrics

If ever you’ve got rain in your heart
Someone has hurt you, and torn you apart
Am I unwise to open up your eyes to love me?

And let it be like they said it would be
Me loving you girl, and you loving me
Am I unwise to open up your eyes to love me?

Run to me whenever you’re lonely
(To love me)
Run to me if you need a shoulder
Now and then, you need someone older
So darling, you run to me

And when you’re out in the cold
No one beside you, and no one to hold
Am I unwise to open up your eyes to love me?

And when you’ve got nothing to lose
Nothing to pay for and nothing to choose
Am I unwise to open up your eyes to love me

Run to me whenever you’re lonely
(To love me)
Run to me if you need a shoulder
Now and then, you need someone older
So darling, you run to me

Run to me whenever you’re lonely
Run to me if you need a shoulder
Now and then, you need someone older
So darling, you run to me

Run to me whenever you’re lonely
Run to me if you need a shoulder
Now and then, you need someone older
So darling, you run to me

#283 I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song- Jim Croce

Every time I tried to tell you the words just came out wrong/
So I have to so I love you in a song.

“I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song” is very meta. I love the fact that Croce just flat out gets to the point of this whole love-song-writing business. He is around a girl that he is in love with and it makes him stumble upon his words. But he has so many feelings that he needs to express: so he wrote this song.

I imagine hearing this must have made the ladies/lady swoon. I feel that this is a common experience among a lot of songwriters. They have feelings that they want to express to their love-interest, but they find it easier to do so in song than in words for whatever reason. Lucky for us.

Ill Have To Say I Love You In a Song Meaning
Jim Croce

Croce’s voice always sounds amazing. His sound is very distinct and if you don’t listen closely it sounds like a lot of his songs sound similarly, but I really believe he has a deep catalog that is under-explored. Partially due to the fact that soft-rock doesn’t get the due that other genres do and partially due to his short career.

He was so young when he died. He never had a chance to go through phases and reinvent himself or explore other sides of his genius. Jim Croce is one of the biggest omissions from the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

I’ll Have To Say I Love You In A Song Lyrics

Well, I know it’s kind of late,
I hope I didn’t wake you.
But what I’ve got to say can’t wait,
I know you’d understand.
‘Cause every time I tried to tell you
The words just came out wrong.
So I’ll have to say “I love you” in a song.

Yeah, I know it’s kind of strange,
Every time I’m near you,
I just run out of things to say,
I know you’d understand.
‘Cause every time I tried to tell you
The words just came out wrong.
So I’ll have to say “I love you” in a song.

‘Cause every time the time was right
All the words just came out wrong.
So I’ll have to say “I love you” (I love you) in a song.

Yeah, I know it’s kind of late, (it’s kind of late)
I hope I didn’t wake you.
But there’s something that I just got to say.
(I know you’d understand)
I know you’d understand.
‘Cause every time I tried to tell you
The words just came out wrong.
So I’ll have to say “I love you” in a song.
