#312 Famous Blue Raincoat- Leonard Cohen

And what can I tell you my brother, my killer
What can I possibly say?
Sincerely, L. Cohen

Does it seem like Leonard Cohen leads a much more exciting life than you? “Famous Blue Raincoat” is a letter that he is writing to a former friend. He is asking how he is doing. His friend “went clear”: he disconnected from the people in his life. Cohen had a troubled relationship with his friend.

Famous Blue Raincoat Meaning
Cohen

His friend had a fling with his wife Jane. Cohen notices that it brings happiness to her that he thought she would never find again. He feels that he lost a part of her because of it. Oh yeah, and Jane says “hello”.  It is a pretty crazy story. It’s great drama.

One interesting aspect is how he seems to show more affection towards his friend than towards Jane. He calls his friend “my brother” and says he forgives him but seems rather apathetic about Jane’s philandering. He noticed that she came back “nobodies wife”, yet he stays with her.

Perhaps this just wouldn’t be the place to say anything about his feelings about Jane. (That is, in a letter to his friend). But the primary emotion I feel that Cohen has towards Jane is relief. Like he is thankful to his friend that he snapped Jane out of her depression. She must have been quite an emotional burden.

Cohen’s best song might have been a cover by another artist.

Famous Blue Raincoat Lyrics

It’s four in the morning, the end of December
I’m writing you now just to see if you’re better
New York is cold, but I like where I’m living
There’s music on Clinton Street all through the evening

I hear that you’re building your little house deep in the desert
You’re living for nothing now, I hope you’re keeping some kind of record

Yes, and Jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear
Did you ever go clear?

Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
You’d been to the station to meet every train, and
You came home without Lili Marlene

And you treated my woman to a flake of your life
And when she came back she was nobody’s wife

Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth
One more thin gypsy thief
Well, I see Jane’s awake
She sends her regards

And what can I tell you my brother, my killer
What can I possibly say?
I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you
I’m glad you stood in my way

If you ever come by here, for Jane or for me
Well, your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free

Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
I thought it was there for good so I never tried
And Jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear
Sincerely, L Cohen

#309 Try and Love Again- The Eagles

Would I lose or win/
If I try and love again?

“Try and Love Again” is one of my favorite Eagles songs-written and performed by Randy Meisner. Meisner was the bands original bassist who was replaced by Timothy B Schmitt after Hotel California. The Eagles had a host of lineups. My impression is that Henley and Frey were difficult to work with. They wrote the majority of the songs, so they called the shots.

Try and Love Again Meaning
Randy Meisner

Meisner has several good songs, but this is his one great one. It is under-appreciated, and I have never heard it mentioned even amongst the greatest of the Eagles songs. The lyrics are earnest. The lyrics express a man trying to overcome feeling of doubt concerning getting back out there after a breakup. Will I be able to love again? Is it even worth it? Will I end up hurting more? These are legitimate questions.

The twangy guitar sound is unique to this song. It certainly stands out among Eagles songs and I am not sure I have heard this effect anywhere before. Meisner’s vocal is amazing, and we can hear his hesitancy and heartbreak. It is heartfelt and the backup harmonies are some of the Eagles finest.

Try and Love Again Lyrics

When you’re out there on your own
Where your memories can find you
Like a circle goes around
You were lost until you found out
What it all comes down to

One by one
The lonely feelings come
Day by day, they slowly fade away

Ooh, the look was in her eyes
You never know what might be found there
She was dancing right in time
And the moves she made so fine
Like the music that surrounds her

Should I stay or go?
I really want to know
Would I lose or win
If I try and love again?
Oh oh oh gonna try and love again
Oh oh oh I’m gonna try and love again
Oh oh oh gonna try and love

Right or wrong, what’s done is done
It’s only moments that you borrow
But the thoughts will linger on
Of the lady and her song
When the sun comes up tomorrow

Well, it might take years
To see through all these tears
Don’t let go
When you find it you will know

Oh oh oh, gonna try and love again

#308 Eye in the Sky- Alan Parsons Project

So find another fool like before/
Cause I ain’t gonna live anymore believing/
Some of the lies while all of the signs are deceiving.

“Eye in the Sky” is a great concept for a song. Alan Parsons has a revelation, and all of the sudden he sees through all the BS that his lover has been peddling to him. Everything in his life becomes clear. He looks at her differently now. It almost feels like a God-like power. He now has the Eye in the Sky to see the truth. Where was it all these years?

Eye in the Sky Meaning
Alan Parsons Project

He tells her don’t even bother lying—I see you for what you are now, and nothing is going to change my mind. While it is said that he is discovering his “power” under these circumstances, he feels a slight surge of confidence in seeing the Truth finally. And he brags about it a bit.

Eric Woolfson sings most of the song as if he is emotionally removed from the matter. It is like he is stating the facts. But we start to hear his emotion come out near the end as he sings “Cause I ain’t gonna live anymore believing/ Some of the lies while all of the signs are deceiving.”

The songs unique sound is created by using bass, keyboards and drums primarily. I believe the drums may be programmed. A little electric guitar is added at the end for flavor. He also uses a cool technique that Motown uses a lot: his background singers repeat lines in a way such that they sound like they are friends behind him also chiding the woman for lying. Kind of like using your background singers to have your back when you’re down.

Eye In the Sky Lyrics

Don’t think sorry’s easily said
Don’t try turning tables instead
You’ve taken lots of Chances before
But I’m not gonna give anymore
Don’t ask me
That’s how it goes
Cause part of me knows what you’re thinkin’

Don’t say words you’re gonna regret
Don’t let the fire rush to your head
I’ve heard the accusation before
And I ain’t gonna take any more
Believe me
The sun in your Eyes
Made some of the lies worth believing

I am the eye in the sky
Looking at you
I can read your mind
I am the maker of rules
Dealing with fools
I can cheat you blind
And I don’t need to see any more
To know that
I can read your mind, I can read your mind

Don’t leave false illusions behind
Don’t cry cause I ain’t changing my mind
So find another fool like before
Cause I ain’t gonna live anymore believing
Some of the lies while all of the signs are deceiving

I am the eye in the sky
Looking at you
I can read your mind
I am the maker of rules
Dealing with fools
I can cheat you blind
And I don’t need to see any more
To know that
I can read your mind, I can read your mind
