#394 Don’t Fear The Reaper- Blue Oyster Cult

Come on baby, don’t fear the reaper/
Baby take my hand, don’t fear the reaper.

I didn’t realize that Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear The Reaper” was the song that Saturday Night Live used for the cowbell skit. But as I was listening to this in preparation to write about it, I was thinking “Is this a rock song with an effective use of a cowbell?” Funny. It actually does add to the song. A good producer can make or break a song.

The electric guitars and harmonies are what really stand out in this song. This song is a bit of a throwback. It was released in 1976 but it sounds like something straight out of the psychedelic rock phase of 67-69. I could see this being Jefferson Airplane, the Grass Roots or even The Association.

Fear The Reaper Meaning
Blue Oyster Cult

This song’s message is a good one: we shouldn’t fear death. Just as Romeo and Juliet will be together forever in the afterlife, so will the hundreds of thousands of loved ones when they die. So grab the reapers hand…it’s okay. It is a similar but different take on certain aspects of the Judeo-Christian tradition. I think many people think of heaven as a place where they reunite with loved ones.

Other religions have similar concepts of the happy afterlife: Valhalla, Nirvana, Paradise, etc. Roeser is imagining something very similar. In this case The Reaper would be similar to The Holy Spirit. The Reaper sounds cooler though…and more demonic. Apparently, this caused quite a stir upon its release.

The bridge is great. It sounds so different from the rest of the song. It does sound “bolted-on” in a sense, in that there is no transition and very little melodic similarity. But it sounds kind of creepy, and it works for me. The Moody Blues “Tuesday Afternoon” has a similarly disjointed bridge, which is another link to the psychedelic rock era.

Don’t Fear The Reaper Lyrics

All our times have come
Here but now they’re gone
Seasons don’t fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain, we can be like they are

Come on baby, don’t fear the reaper
Baby take my hand, don’t fear the reaper
We’ll be able to fly, don’t fear the reaper
Baby I’m your man

La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la

Valentine is done
Here but now they’re gone
Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity, Romeo and Juliet
40, 000 men and women everyday, Like Romeo and Juliet
40, 000 men and women everyday, Redefine happiness
Another 40, 000 coming everyday, We can be like they are

Come on baby, don’t fear the reaper
Baby take my hand, don’t fear the reaper
We’ll be able to fly, don’t fear the reaper
Baby I’m your man

La, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la

Love of two is one
Here but now they’re gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn’t go on

Then the door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew then disappeared
The curtains flew then he appeared, saying don’t be afraid

Come on baby, and she had no fear
And she ran to him, then they started to fly
They looked backward and said goodby, she had become like they are
She had taken his hand, she had become like they are
Come on baby, don’t fear the reaper

#393 Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters- Elton John

I thought I knew/
But now I know that rose trees never grow/
In New York City.

Elton John wrote almost all of his songs with lyricist Bernie Taupin. “Mona Lisa’s and Mad Hatters” is about the disillusionment Taupin felt while in the big city. How do you feel when reality doesn’t match your high expectations? In this world everyone appears to be super-busy, too busy to know if it is day or night.

Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters Meaning
Elton

They might be busy because they are out partying all night or out working and making a lot of money, but their life is defined by its speed. In this world people “run you through”. However, there are special people you can meet in the city, and he is thankful for those people and the small amount of joy he has been able to carve out for himself in this world.

Elton’s voice sounds great here. The difference in this song- compared to other works by John- is that the piano is not solely featured. There are times when a mandolin is the primary instrument. Overall, the arrangement is sparse and gets the feel of Spanish Harlem with its combination of instruments.

Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters Lyrics

And now I know
Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say
I thought I knew
But now I know that rose trees never grow
In New York City

Until you’ve seen this trash can dream come true
You stand at the edge while people run you through
And I thank the Lord
There’s people out there like you
I thank the Lord there’s people out there like you

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can’t and that is why
They know not if it’s dark outside or light

This Broadway’s got
It’s got a lot of songs to sing
If I knew the tunes I might join in
I’ll go my way alone
Grow my own, my own seeds shall be sown, in New York City

Subway’s no way for a good man to go down
Rich man can ride and the hobo he can drown
And I thank the Lord for the people I have found
I thank the Lord for the people I have found

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can’t and that is why
They know not if it’s dark outside or light

And now I know
Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say
I thought I knew
But now I know that rose trees never grow
In New York City

Subway’s no way for a good man to go down
Rich man can ride and the hobo he can drown
And I thank the Lord for the people I have found
I thank the Lord for the people I have found

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can’t and that is why
They know not if it’s dark outside or light
They know not if it’s dark outside or light

#388 Wedding Song (There is Love)- Paul Stookey

For if loving is the answer then who’s the giving for?
Do you believe in something that you’ve never seen before?
Oh there’s love, oh there’s love.

“Wedding Song (There is Love)” is written and sung by Paul, from the great folk group Peter, Paul & Mary. This is the one of the best and most unique wedding songs. It is written by a great artist who you know– but you might not recognize his name. Paul asks “what is a wedding?” and sings a beautiful melody with simple instrumentation that explains marriage and the importance of weddings.

Wedding Song There is Love Meaning
Paul Stookey

The song has religious overtones–specifically Christian overtones- but it doesn’t get bogged down in them and Stookey allows for more universal themes of love and community to carry the song. It is religious but can appeal to atheists–it celebrates the union of two souls.

For Paul, weddings are a union of two spirits, and the culmination of the life of a man and a woman (remember there was no such thing as gay weddings back then). It is a time of growing up and leaving the nest. This is how it always has been and how it always will be. But why get married at all? Because whenever two people come together to celebrate their love for each other and declare their love for each other, God also is there with you.

Stookey’s voice on “Wedding Song (There is Love)” is so pure and the simple instrumentation is heavenly. Interestingly, I have never heard this at a wedding- or on the radio. It feels like the type of vibe and message I would want at my wedding.

Wedding Song (There is Love) Lyrics

He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts,
Rest assured this troubadour is acting on His part.
The union of your spirits here has caused Him to remain,
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name.
There is love, there is love.

Well a man shall leave his mother, and a woman leave her home,
They shall travel on to where the two shall be as one.
As it was in the beginning is now until the end,
A woman draws her life from man and gives it back again.
And there is love, there is love.

Well then what’s to be the reason for becoming man and wife?
Is it love that brings you here or love that gives you life?
For if loving is the answer then who’s the giving for?
Do you believe in something that you’ve never seen before?
Oh there’s love, oh there’s love.

Oh, the marriage of your spirits here has caused Him to remain,
For whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name.
There is love, oh there’s love.
