#420 You Are So Beautiful- Joe Cocker

You’re everything I need/
You are so beautiful to me.

Joe Cocker is one of the best cover artists ever. There are a couple other artists in contention: Nina Simone, Roberta Flack, The Byrds, Tori Amos. The ability to take a good song and interpret it in a different way so as to sound like a completely different song is a great talent. Joe Cocker is one of the best. Here he covers Billy Preston’s “You are So Beautiful”, but really, this is the definitive version.

You Are So Beautiful Meaning
Joe Cocker

The accompanying piano in “You Are So Beautiful” is great. The arrangement is unique and elevates the song. It is hard to create a unique piano arrangement that is noticeable in popular music: most are pretty standard. This is different. Very elegant. Cocker’s vocal styling does the rest.

At different times during the song he sings loudly and softly and the vocals are borderline over-melodramatic (especially the last note) but Cocker cuts it off at just the right time. The message is simple: you are beautiful, and you are everything that I want and need. This is a classic love song.

Lyrics You Are So Beautiful
You are so beautiful
To me
You are so beautiful
To me
Can’t you see
You’re everything I hoped for
You’re everything I need
You are so beautiful
To me

You are so wonderful
To me
You are so wonderful
To me
Can’t you see
You’re everything I hoped for
You’re everything I need
You are so wonderful
To me

You are so beautiful
To me
You are so beautiful
To me
Can’t you see
You’re everything I hoped for
You’re everything I need
You are so beautiful
To me

#417 Can We Still Be Friends- Todd Rundgren

Things are said one by one/
Before you know it’s all gone.

Todd Rundgren is no longer in love and he is trying to lessen the hurt while breaking up with his girlfriend. Things have changed but can we still be friends? Notice how he never says things are over or specifically makes a clear statement like “it is over between us”, he simply says it isn’t working out can we still be friends. It is kind of a cop-out line, and you wonder if Rundgren has any intention of remaining friends or if this is just a line to lessen the pain of a breakup. I think it is the latter.

Can We Still Be Friends Meaning
Todd Rundgren

Rundgren’s “Can We Still Be Friends” works because it sounds sad. Rundgren is capturing the sound of the sadness that occurs at the end of a relationship. He sounds defeated. Weary. He is a bit philosophical. And at the same time we never get the impression this was a great love, but it still hurts to end it. The sound is driven by the synthesizer: He mostly uses different settings on the synthesizer for different parts of the song, which is not something you hear often. Great background vocals too.

Can We Still Be Friends? Lyrics

We can’t play this game anymore, but
Can we still be friends?
Things just can’t go on like before, but
Can we still be friends?

We had something to learn
Now it’s time for the wheel to turn
Things are said one by one
Before you know it’s all gone

Let’s admit we made a mistake, but
Can we still be friends?
Heartbreak’s never easy to take, but
Can we still be friends?

It’s a strange sad affair
Sometimes seems like we just don’t care
Don’t waste time feeling hurt
We’ve been through hell together

La la la la, la la la la
Can we still be friends?
Can we still get together sometime?
We awoke from our dream

Things are not always what they seem
Memories linger on
It’s like a sweet sad old song

#414 Both Sides Now- Joni Mitchell

It’s life’s illusions I recall/
I really don’t know life at all.

Mitchell’s original recording of “Both Sides Now” and Judy Collins cover both amazing songs. “Both Sides Now” is about how two things can feel very differently to you at different times. Mitchell remembers as a young girl seeing clouds and imagining all sorts of pretty pictures inside of them and really enjoying that experience.

Both Sides Now Meaning
Judy Collins

More recently, she looked at the clouds and it reminded her how they were blocking the sun, bringing rain, and keeping her inside when she wanted to go out. So are clouds the happy things that stir the imagination or the downer that brings the rain? Both, really. She calls this dual nature an ‘illusion’. She really doesn’t know clouds at all.

Both Sides Now Meaning
Joni Mitchell

Similarly, circuses and love also seem to be this way–perhaps she doesn’t know life at all. The ability for each thing to bring us happiness or sadness causes her to believe she is not really knowing the essential nature of these things.

I prefer the vocal on the Judy Collins version but the electric piano or organ overwhelms the mix. I feel like the definitive version of this song has not been done yet. If I was a contestant in a singing show like The Voice I think this would make a good candidate for a reinterpretation.

Both Sides Now Lyrics

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons every where
Looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It’s cloud’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and ferries wheels
The dizzy dancing way that you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I’ve looked at love that way

But now it’s just another show
And you leave ’em laughing when you go
And if you care, don’t let them know
Don’t give yourself away

I’ve looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It’s love’s illusions that I recall
I really don’t know love
Really don’t know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say, “I love you” right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I’ve looked at life that way

Oh, but now old friends they’re acting strange
And they shake their heads, they say I’ve changed
Well something’s lost, but something’s gained
In living every day

I’ve looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It’s life’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know life at all

It’s life’s illusions that I recall
I really don’t know life
I really don’t know life at all
