#465 Here, There and Everywhere- The Beatles

I want her everywhere/
And if she’s beside me I know I need never care.

“Here, There and Everywhere” is a Beatles love song by McCartney off the Revolver album. This is from the early-middle Beatles period. We see Paul experimenting with complex chord progressions, but his lyrics are still relatively simple…though more complex than “And I Love Her” which he wrote a couple years prior.

Here, is a great example where Paul gets his reputation as the one who writes the silly love songs. He writes about feeling complete only when she is with him, and how their love will never die. These are romantic expressions perfect for a ballad, and Paul is the king of the ballad.

Here There and Everywhere Meaning
Paul

A couple notes: George Harrisons guitar work is prominently displayed in this song. That sound he achieves with the guitar is unique. This song was written after Paul heard the Beach Boys Pet Sounds. The background harmonies are something we hadn’t heard from The Beatles since perhaps “That Boy”.

McCartney perhaps drew inspiration from Brian Wilson. While much is made of The Beatles inspiring the Rolling Stones and the arms race between them, it was Brian Wilson who was really doing the most amazing work of this time period and The Beatles took notice and their work was inspired by it.

Here, There and Everywhere Lyrics

To lead a better life
I need my love to be here

Here, making each day of the year
Changing my life with a wave of her hand
Nobody can deny that there’s something there
There, running my hands through her hair
Both of us thinking how good it can be
Someone is speaking
But she doesn’t know he’s there

I want her everywhere
And if she’s beside me I know I need never care
But to love her is to need her everywhere
Knowing that love is to share
Each one believing that love never dies
Watching her eyes and hoping I’m always there

I want her everywhere
And if she’s beside me I know I need never care
But to love her is to need her everywhere
Knowing that love is to share
Each one believing that love never dies
Watching her eyes and hoping I’m always there

I will be there
And everywhere
Here, there and everywhere

#462 For Once in My Life- Stevie Wonder

For once in my life I won’t let sorrow hurt me/
Not like it’s hurt me before.

Just like David Gray’s “This Year’s Love”, in “For Once in My Life”, Stevie Wonder is facing the prospect of a new relationship. Stevie seems like he’s in a much better place emotionally than Gray is.

Wonder realizes that he’s been hurt before but his enthusiasm over the woman lets him recognize that she is special, not just “this year’s love.”  What is his is hers and he is excited that he has found someone who truly needs him. We can hear it in his voice and the melody and tempo of the song.

For Once in My Life Meaning
Stevie Wonder

This song is a Motown record and features a band with a full brass section, a gospel choir background group and a harmonica solo. You don’t hear this combination very often, but it works here perfectly. “For Once in My Life” is one of Stevie’s early and biggest hits.

For Once In My Life Lyrics

For once in my life I have someone who needs me
Someone I’ve needed so long
For once unafraid I can go where life leads me
Somehow I know I’ll be strong

For once I can touch, what my heart used to dream of
Long before I knew
Oh someone warm like you
Would make my dream come true, yeah yeah (For once in my life)

For once in my life I won’t let sorrow hurt me
Not like it’s hurt me before (Not like it’s hurt before)

For once I have someone I know won’t desert me
I’m not alone anymore (I’m not alone anymore)

For once I can say
This is mine you can’t take it
As long as I know I have love I can make it
For once in my life I have someone who needs me (Someone who needs me)

Hey hey hey, yeah (Someone who needs me)
Oh baby, Lord baby

For once in my life I won’t let sorrow hurt me
Not like it’s hurt me before (Not like it’s hurt before)

For once I have something I know won’t desert me
I’m not alone anymore (I’m not alone anymore)
For once I can say
This is mine you can’t take it
As long as I know I have love I can make it
For once in my life I have someone who needs me (Someone who needs me)
For once in my life (Someone who needs me)
Somebody that needs me (Someone who needs me) Oh baby, for once in my life

#451 Purple Haze- Jimi Hendrix

Am I happy or in misery?
Whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me

At first Jimi’s “Purple Haze” appears to be about a guy who becomes infatuated with a girl. His brain gets a bit foggy because she is all he can think about. Infatuation can be a powerful drug. She has put a spell on him. But then the song takes a darker turn. He says: “I’m talkin’ about the hard stuff…so far out of my mind/ Something’s happening” This is clearly a drug reference.

Purple Haze Meaning
Jimi

The sound is very psychedelic and trippy. Is it the most famous psychedelic rock song? Perhaps. Listen to the guitar work—it is iconic. It establishes the mood. It sounds like our reality is being distorted by Jimi’s guitar.

A lot is made of Jimi’s guitar work. Rightfully so. His voice is equally powerful, but it is underrated. It is smooth and masculine. He never over-emotes. We never feel like Jimi is delivering a performance; we feel like the emotion and music is spontaneously emitting from him. It feels genuine.

Purple Haze Lyrics

Purple haze all in my brain
Lately things don’t seem the same
Actin’ funny, but I don’t know why
‘Scuse me while I kiss the sky

Purple haze all around
Don’t know if I’m comin’ up or down
Am I happy or in misery?
Whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me

Help me
Help me
Oh, no, no

Hammerin’
Talkin’ ’bout heart ‘n’ s-soul
I’m talkin’ about hard stuff
If everybody’s still around, fluff and ease, if
So far out my mind
Something’s happening, something’s happening

Ooo, ahhh
Ooo, ahhh
Ooo, ahhh
Ooo, ahhh, yeah!

Purple haze all in my eyes, uhh
Don’t know if it’s day or night
You got me blowin’, blowin’ my mind
Is it tomorrow or just the end of time?

Ooh
Help me
Ahh, yea-yeah, purple haze, yeah
Oh, no, oh
Oh, help me
Tell me, baby, tell me
I can’t go on like this
You’re makin’ me blow my mind, mama
N-no, nooo
No, it’s painful, baby
