#68 Will You Love Me Tomorrow- The Shirelles/ Carole King

Tonight the light of love is in your eyes/
But will you love me tomorrow.

“Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” was first released by The Shirelles. Their version is fantastic, but Carole King’s is great too—she wrote it. This song is about a one-night affair. The narrator is caught up in the moment and hears words of love and sees the look in her lover’s eyes but wonders if this is just a temporary feeling that will vanish in the morning.

She doesn’t want the night to end, but she knows that people can get swept up in the heat of passion and make promises they don’t plan to keep. King sounds very vulnerable singing this song. Also, note the guitar and backup vocals are performed by her then-boyfriend James Taylor.

King is one of the most underrated singer-songwriters to those outside of music geeks. You’ve heard all her songs, you’ve heard them covered by other singers and many are iconic. You can probably sing along to many of them. “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” appears on her famous album Tapestry, which is a top 5 all-time album (but that is a list for another day). She is great at combining great lyrics with great melodies.

#67 Visions of Johanna- Bob Dylan

How can I explain? It’s so hard to get on/
And these visions of Johanna, they kept me up past the dawn.

In Bob Dylan’s “Visions of Johanna” we learn that Johanna is gone. Dylan compares her to his friend Louise and other women in the song. Louise is fine, but does she have to always be all over her new boyfriend? Is that what is causing him to think of Johanna again? This guy that Louise is seeing seems to make mention of Johanna and it does not please Dylan—even if it was an off-hand comment. It is things like this that make it hard to move past her.

As he travels through streets he sees whore-houses (Johanna is nothing like that) and museums (Johanna flowed across the stage so gracefully)…it just become all too much. The thoughts haunt him, they are hurtful, but still, they are the only thing he has left of her.

“Visions of Johanna” is just…different than almost anything else you will find in music. It is a haunting portrayal of a man obsessed with an ideal of a woman. You can hear it in his voice, and it comes across in the lyrics. For the best version I recommend the Live at Free Trade Hall, from May 17, 1966.

#66 Hey Jude- The Beatles

For well you know that it’s a fool/
Who plays it cool/
By making his world a little colder.

The Beatles “Hey Jude” is one of the greatest rock anthems of all-time. Perhaps a couple of Queen songs like We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions are in the same league  (though we are really splitting hairs…they are both great). “Hey Jude” was written by McCartney to Lennon’s son, Julian, as Lennon was going through a divorce.

The lyrics of The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” aren’t deep or complex, but I find them to be wisdom-filled and well-intentioned. The lyric above is great and then there is this gem:

Remember to let her into your heart/
then you can start to make it better.

It might sound quaint, but it lands hard. The song has a classic “Carpe diem” theme.

The most iconic part of “Hey Jude” is the communal outro which makes up about half of the song’s length. It is simply fun to sing and to hear McCartney go kind of crazy improvising during that part. We don’t hear much jamming on the piano in rock, but we get some here.

McCartney uses a relatively simple sounding melody and arraignment along with straightforward lyrics to create a carpe diem anthem. Ringo’s drums are done well. The times when the full band breaks into a harmony sound wonderful.
