#74 The Other Woman- Nina Simone

The other woman has time to manicure her nails/
The other woman is perfect where her rival fails.

Nina Simone’s “The Other Woman” shows she is one of the masters of covering other artist’s material. Another I would put in her league is Tori Amos. Interestingly, both are classically trained pianists. I think that has a lot to do with it. They can add nuance to a song where before there was none, by taking a standard chord and turning into a 6th,7th, or 9th for flavor. Also, they can simply play the songs better and with more difficult and sophisticated arrangements.

The Other Woman Meaning
Nina Simone

“The Other Woman” is an old-school song. You wouldn’t hear this song written today…attitudes have changed. However, it was written by Jessie Mae Robinson, a woman. I suspected a man was the author. The story is that while the Other Woman looks better, and always meets my man smelling fresh like a daisy, she will end up spending her life alone, because he’s staying married to me.

If you are a girl/woman who is an aspiring singer, listen to Simone for clues on how to sing. She accentuates her lower octave and modulates her tone. Emotion is conveyed through the use of diction and slight variance in volume and barely any vibrato. It sounds like she is singing for an audience of one, not a stadium. There is one, short tasteful vocal run and that’s it. You might not win any contests with this style, but you will win an audience.

The Other Woman Lyrics

The other woman finds time to manicure her nails
The other woman is perfect where her rival fails
And she’s never seen with pin curls in her hair
The other woman enchants her clothes with French perfume

The other woman keeps fresh cut flowers in each room
There are never toys that’s scattered everywhere
And when her baby comes to call
He’ll find her waiting like a lonesome queen

Cos when she’s by his side
It’s such a change from old routine
But the other woman will always cry herself to sleep
The other woman will never have his love to keep

And as the years go by the other woman
Will spend her life alone
Written by Jessie Mae Robinson

#72 The Boxer- Simon and Garfunkel

In the clearing stands a boxer/
And a fighter by his trade…

Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Boxer” is a story about perseverance. The song was written well into Simon and Garfunkel’s career. “The Boxer” is perhaps a bit autobiographical, which is interesting. Even as Simon was seemingly on top of the world, he sees himself as being beat up and an underdog.

The song’s meaning resonates because most of us feel like underdogs—we are all “The Boxer”—fighting to make it and flourish in a sometimes-cruel world.

The Boxer Meaning
Simon and Garfunkel

The production and musical arrangement on “The Boxer” is top-notch. There are two instruments used in “The Boxer” that are iconic, that I don’t know if I have heard in another pop/rock song—the bass harmonica and the piccolo trumpet. The bass harmonica in “The Boxer” is especially interesting to me. All these years I thought it was a bassoon or perhaps a bass clarinet. The drum work is also very interesting.

The iconic slams during the chorus are great and the galloping in the background is not something anyone would think would work, but it does. It sounds like someone running away.

Paul Simon’s guitar work is very solid and often goes unnoticed, but it has become iconic as well. As with most of their songs, the harmonies play a huge part in their success. In “The Boxer”, Garfunkel is much less prominent than in other songs. He allows Simon to shine.

The Boxer Lyrics

I am just a poor boy,
Though my story’s seldom told,
I have squandered my resistance,
For a pocket full of mumbles, such are promises.
All lies and jests,
Still a man hears what he wants to hear,
And disregards the rest.

When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy,
In the company of strangers.
In the quiet of the railway station-
Running scared.
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go.
Looking for the places
Only they would know.

Lie la lie, lie la la la lie lie.
Lie la lie, lie la la la la lie la la lie.

Asking only workman’s wages
I come looking for a job,
But I get no offers.
Just a come-on from the whores
On Seventh Avenue.
I do declare:
There were times when I was so lonesome,
I took some comfort there. le le le le le le le.

Lie la lie, lie la la la lie lie.
Lie la lie, lie la la la la lie la la lie.

Then I’m laying out my winter clothes,
And wishing I was gone-
Going home.
Where the New York City winters
Aren’t bleeding me;
Leading me,
Going home.

In the clearing stands a boxer-
And a fighter by his trade,
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down,
Or cut him till he cried out-
In his anger and his shame:
“I am leaving, I am leaving”,
But the fighter still remains.
mmm mmm

#69 Julia- The Beatles

Half of what I say is meaningless/
But I say it just to reach you, Julia.

We don’t get to hear a lot of solo acoustic work from Lennon from his Beatles years and it is a shame. “Julia” is a tender song (written about his mother) with a beautiful melody and simple accompanying guitar part that highlights Lennon’s voice. I am not sure how many other songs he does finger picking on, but it sounds nice. The song sounds personal to him and his humming helps to sweeten the delivery. He calls this a “song of love for you, Julia”. Very sweet.

Julia beatles Meaning
Lennon

“Julia’s” bridge is really amazing (her hair of floating sky is shimmering…). It really shows that a bridge doesn’t need to be long, it just needs to break up the rhythm of the song to create a complimentary sound to the verse and chorus. Once we get back to the chorus and verse for the second or third time, it will sound more fresh if it had a bridge between it. This is one of the better ones.

This song sounds like a lullaby. I imagine there are many women out there named Julia who probably have a love/hate relationship with this song. Does every suitor sing it to them? That could get annoying.

Julia Lyrics

Half of what I say is meaningless
But I say it just to reach you, Julia

Julia, Julia, ocean child, calls me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
Julia, seashell eyes, windy smile, calls me
So I sing a song of love, Julia

Her hair of floating sky is shimmering, glimmering
In the sun

Julia, Julia, morning moon, touch me
So I sing a song of love, Julia

When I cannot sing my heart
I can only speak my mind, Julia

Julia, sleeping sand, silent cloud, touch me
So I sing a song of love, Julia

Hum, hum, hum, calls me
So I sing a song of love, Julia, Julia, Julia
