#252 Song to Keep You Company- Bridget St John

I feel around and find you are/
No longer where you used to be.

“Song to Keep You Company” by Bridget St John is a folk song in every sense of the word. There is no chorus nor even a refrain. Folk has no need for that, though it does use it sometimes. St John uses a fairly standard picking pattern, and her guitar playing is average, but she sings with such passion that this song cannot be ignored.

But what exactly is she singing about in “Song to Keep You Company”? That is a tougher question to answer. I believe she is contemplating an ex, thinking about their time together. Her emotions toward him (her?) are bittersweet. There were lies and fights but there was love too. In some way, her memory is all that exists of her ex, and she feels a sweetness in that. She has a control over what memories she can choose to recall. Perhaps today she will choose to remember the days that he surrounded her with love.

Song to Keep You Company Meaning
St. John

Bridget St. John is one of my favorite discoveries from this process. She is amazing! I can’t believe I had never heard of her before. She is an amazing artist. She, Judee Sill, Sia and Ritchie Valens have been the biggest surprises for me. Prior to doing this list I would have guessed they would have exactly one song on this list. They have several (I won’t spoil it for you).

Song to Keep You Company Lyrics

Days dissolving in throw my mind
I feel around and find you are
No longer where you used to be
Escaping in the mist of memories

Remembering what was before
You blistered words and whispered lies for anyone
They’re dead and gone
I’m moving on to you

Images of you appear
And though you lead today
It seems you’re nearer now,
More real, you are part of me

I’ll count the days and keep their songs
Accept the love you offer to surround me with
And anything you ask of me
I’ll give

#242 I Put a Spell On You- Nina Simone/ Creedance

I put a spell on you/
Because you’re mine.

Nina Simone and Creedance Cleerwater Revival both produced definitive versions of “I Put a Spell On You”. The original, by Jay Hawkins, was just average. It sounds like a bad Halloween song. Nina Simone turns “I Put A Spell On You” into a song that about a scorned woman who is bound to get back at her man for wronging her.

I put a Spell on You Meaning
Nina Simone

Her man is cheating and lying, but she has decided it is time for him to stop. He belongs to her, so she is going to put a spell on him, because he is hers. It is dark, sexy and vindictive. And unapologetic. Simone sings it that way too.

I Put A Spell On You Meaning
CCR

An amazing aspect of the Simone recording is her piano playing. It is incredibly difficult to play what she is at the same time she is singing. The vocal part and the piano part are complementary and arrhythmic, and it is hard to do that at the same time.

Creedence’s version of “I Put a Spell on You” is similar, but with the guitar. Fogerty’s interpretation comes across as more angry. Like he is deeply hurt, and he is going to get her back. Simone is just claiming what is rightfully hers.

Also-is this the first use of the phrase “baby daddy”?

Jay Hawkins

I Put a Spell on You Lyrics

I put a spell on you-
Because you’re mine.

You better stop the things you do.
I tell ya I ain’t lyin’.
I ain’t lyin’.

You know I can’t stand it.
You’re runnin’ around,
You know better daddy.
I can’t stand it ’cause you put me down.
Oh no.

I put a spell on you,
Because you’re mine.

You know I love you.
I love you.
I love you.
I love you anyhow.
And I don’t care if you don’t want me.
I’m yours right now.

I put a spell on you,
Because you’re mine.

You know I can’t stand it,
Your running around.
You know baby daddy,
I can’t stand it
‘Cause you put me down.

Ooo I put a spell on you
Because you’re mine.
Because you’re mine.
Because you’re mine.
Oh yeah.

#241 Sunshine of Your Love- Cream

I’m with you my love/
The light’s shining through on you.

“Sunshine of Your Love” is Cream’s most famous song. What is great about this song is that there are three excellent musicians playing very distinct parts that somehow meld together to form a great song.

Clapton played lead guitar, Bruce played bass and Ginger Baker played drums; all are considered pioneers of their instruments, and you can hear that here. Baker’s part seems the most “out there”. You won’t hear this beat used on another song. Clapton’s guitar part is the more recognizable—and iconic performance.

Sunshine of Your Love Meaning
Cream

The lyrics of “Sunshine of Your Love” don’t seem to be an incredible focus of the band. It sounds like the narrator is looking forward to being with his woman—perhaps after a late night performing. And after he’s finished with the lovemaking, he is going to stay around and they will bask in the glow of each other’s love. It is a kind-of sweet sentiment, I guess.

Sunshine of Your Love Lyrics

It’s getting near dawn,
When lights close their tired eyes
I’ll soon be with you my love,
To give you my dawn surprise
I’ll be with you darling soon,
I’ll be with you when the stars start falling

I’ve been waiting so long
To be where I’m going
In the sunshine of your love

I’m with you my love,
The light’s shining through on you
Yes, I’m with you my love,
It’s the morning and just we two
I’ll stay with you darling now,
I’ll stay with you till my seas are dried up

I’ve been waiting so long
To be where I’m going
In the sunshine of your love

I’m with you my love,
The light’s shining through on you.
Yes, I’m with you my love,
It’s the morning and just we two.
I’ll stay with you darling now,
I’ll stay with you till my seas are dried up

I’ve been waiting so long
I’ve been waiting so long
I’ve been waiting so long
To be where I’m going
In the sunshine of your love
