I’ve got this burning, burning, yearning feelin’ inside me/
Ooh, deep inside me, and it hurts so bad.
In the mid to late 60s The Supremes were a juggernaut. “Where Did Our Love Go” is one of their first hits. Ross sang lead. The song is a great production. There are so many unique elements that would not appear in a lesser version. Note the footstomping. It works and adds a ton to this song. The sax solo is another nice touch. Sometimes a sax solo can ruin a song, but sometimes it can help make it. Choosing the instrument for the solo is what makes a song go from an A- to an A.
As with all Supremes songs, the interplay between the lead vocal and the background vocal is their signature sound. The song is about a girl asking her man what happened to their love. The background singers are like that great friend who are backing you up singing “why are you such a loser?” to the guy.
Where Did Our Love Go? Lyrics
Baby, baby, baby don’t leave me
Ooh, please don’t leave me all by myself
I’ve got this burning, burning, yearning feelin’ inside me
Ooh, deep inside me and it hurts so bad
You came into my heart (baby, baby) so tenderly
With a burning love (baby, baby)
That stings like a bee (baby, baby)
Now that I surrender (baby, baby) so helplessly
You now want to leave (baby, baby)
Ooh, you wanna leave me (baby, baby)
Ooh (baby, baby)
Baby, baby, where did our love go?
Ooh, don’t you want me?
Don’t you want me no more (baby, baby)?
Ooh, baby
Baby, baby, where did our love go?
And all your promises of a love forevermore!
I’ve got this burning, burning, yearning feelin’ inside me
Ooh, deep inside me, and it hurts so bad
Before you won my heart (baby, baby)
You were a perfect guy
But now that you got me
You wanna leave me behind (baby, baby)
Ooh, baby
Baby, baby, baby don’t leave me
Ooh, please don’t leave me all by myself (baby, baby)
Ooh baby, baby, baby
